I dont care what this man did, it automatically made me laugh, some of my earliest tv/movie memories include him

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Dom DeLuise, who spiced up such movies as "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie" and "The Cannonball Run" with his manic delivery and roly-poly persona, has died, his son's publicist told CNN.

Publicist Jay Schwartz did not disclose the cause of death, but DeLuise, 75, had been battling cancer for more than a year.

DeLuise was surrounded by family when he died in a Santa Monica, California, hospital Monday night, son Michael DeLuise told CNN affiliate KTLA-TV.

DeLuise was most famous for his supporting roles in a number of Mel Brooks films, including 1974's "Saddles" -- in which he played a flamboyant musical director who led dancers in a number called "The French Mistake" -- and 1976's "Silent Movie," in which he played the assistant to Brooks' director Mel Funn. He was also in the Brooks-directed "The Twelve Chairs" (1970), "Spaceballs" (1987) and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993).

But he could also assay more serious roles, most notably in the 1980 dark comedy "Fatso," directed by Brooks' wife, Anne Bancroft, in which he played an overweight man trying to wean himself from comfort food.

DeLuise was also part of the supporting cast in the Burt Reynolds crash-'em-up vehicles "Smokey and the Bandit II" (1980), "Cannonball Run" (1981) and "Cannonball Run II" (1984). Other DeLuise films include "The End" (1978), "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982) and "Johnny Dangerously" (1984).

His voice was featured in such films as "An American Tail" (1986) and its sequels, "All Dogs Go to Heaven" (1989) and its 1996 sequel, and "Oliver & Company" (1988).

Dominic DeLuise was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 1, 1933. In the 1960s he had bit parts in a handful of movies, including "Fail Safe" (1964), but became well known as a regular on "The Entertainers" and a Dean Martin variety show. He had his own summer replacement show in 1968 and was a regular on Glen Campbell's "Goodtime Hour" in 1971-72.

DeLuise had three sons -- Peter, Michael and David -- who all became actors.

His wife of 40 years, actress Carol Arthur, appeared in several movies with him, including "Blazing Saddles" and "Silent Movie," according to DeLuise's Web site.

A frequent collaborator with DeLuise, Burt Reynolds released a statement to "Entertainment Tonight" on his friend's death.

"I was thinking the other day about this. As you get older you think about this more and more, I was dreading this moment. Dom always made everyone feel better when he was around. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I will miss him very much," Reynolds says.

I think about Dom DeLuise every time my daughter and I watch "Wizards of Waverly Place." He was, and will always be, a big influence on the sense of humor that I have.

I guess we'll go have Chinese food tonight in his honor.

Dom was one of the great second bananas. The End is probably my favorite Burt Reynolds' movie and Fatso was very well done and showed his true talents.

More than anything though were the voice and laugh. His voice and laugh were so unique, you knew it was Dom Deluise without seeing the actor. I'll miss that voice and laugh. I have for years.

A sad day. He was the only thing funny or entertaining about Burt Reynold's movies, heh. Very funny guy

So, so true...but I didn't realize until today that he was the voice of Pizza the Hut...and I've seen that movie a bazillion times.

Another great actor gone but not forgotten.

Awww no, he was one of my fave comedians.

I first heard him in All dogs go to heaven. And he cracked me up in Blazing Saddles, and The Glass Bottom Boat, where he played that hilarious misfit of a spy.
He will be missed, and always remembered.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dom DeLuise--like you, Shani, some of my earliest comedic memories involve laughing at him, particularly in Mel Brooks' films.

RIP, Mr. DeLuise, and thanks for all the laughs.

I always wanted him to get the girl in the Cannonball movies, over Burt's character.

They left out one of my favorite Dom movies, The Secret of NIMH. He was the voice of Jeremy the crow.

Thanks for the post. I heard something on the news in passing, but didn't catch the whole story.

Dom will be sorely missed. Not too many comedians out there that could fill his shoes.

His own unique comic flair added quality to any project with which he was involved. Can anyone imagine those Cannonball movies without him? I first remember him from the Dean Martin show, back in the mid sixties. I was probably 5 years old. Even though I didn't understand the jokes I still thought that he was the funniest thing ever. 41 years later...that opinion has not changed. I will miss Dom. The world will be ever so much more boring without him, but ever so much brighter for having had him. Rest in peace, Dom. You made a very real difference in this world.

I'm a big fan of Dom. I was looking back over his imdb and was reminded of the brilliant character Urgo that he played on Stargate SG1. Just noticed that episode, and many other SG1 episodes were directed by his son, Peter Deluise.

Yeah, the whole DeLuise clan were pretty involved with SG-1. As you said, Peter directed 57 episodes as well as making cameos in over half of those episodes. David DeLuise was in a handfull of episodes as Sam Carter's boyfriend "Pete". Michael DeLuise was the star of the SG-1 rip off show "Wormhole X-treme".

My response is, "I like to put forks in an eletrical socket, just LOVE that feeling, can't ever get enough of it, so will you let me put this copper fork in that electric socket?"
