Upcoming films
Everyone's got a school girl crush on JJ Abrams and the new "Star Trek." I've never been particularly impressed with Abrams or "Lost," but the trailers for ST look pretty cool.
I took a stroll over to IMDB to see what was coming out in the next few months, and saw some films that could get me excited: The Girlfriend Experience--Sasha Grey in a Soderbergh film about a call girl. I'm hot and cold with Soderbergh--he smudges the line between dull and brilliant more frequently than I would like. But there's no doubt he's a talented filmmaker, and I'm curious to see whether the porn star has legitimate acting chops. Terminator Salvation--The Terminator franchise has had it's ups and downs, but I'm relying on TS for my pubescent boy summer action movie wood, despite Transformers 2 having Megan Fox in it (the first one didn't do a thing for me, and I have an allergy to Shia LaBeouf). The trailers for TS look awesome, and the Terminator franchise has been with me since high school. Drag Me to Hell--Good ol' Raimi, getting back to his horror roots. I'm a sucker for horror films, even the bad ones, and Raimi has proven he knows how to make good movies. Plus, I've been impressed with Alison Lohman ever since "Matchstick Men." Dead Snow--I probably won't get to see this in a theater due to it's limited release, but how can you go wrong with a plot summary like this?: Quote:
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane--Actually, I've already seen this, as it was released in 2006. But it was kinda cool--I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, especially the ending, but it was a pretty fresh horror film. Inglorious Basterds--Yeah, I'm a Tarantino fanboy, what of it? Of course, my taste in movies isn't everyone's--you won't find me waiting anxiously for a romantic comedy--but that's a short list of some of the films I am looking forward to this summer. Anyone else have some "must sees" that they are waiting for?

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is due out this summer, and I predict it just might push Star Trek for box office bragging rights this summer. I am guessing it will go north of $300 million.
Inglorious Basterds looks fantastic. Kinda stoked for Angels & Demons, Hanks and McGregor should be a fun duo to watch. Terminator likewise is onmy opening weekend list. |

I have a feeling Angels and Demons is going to fall on its face.
I was once a Tarantino fan, but after his last few movies and productions, it's more than stale. Maybe this one will be different. Not really into terminators and won't watch it. I haven't seen anything coming out of big hollywood that really grabs my attention in a loooong time. Maybe I'm just jaded? |

The only movies I care about this summer are Harry Potter and the flick with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale about John Dillinger.

well fugly it appears as though we have very similar tastes in movies. I look forward to some modern-raimi horror flicks!! Evil dead is still one of the best out there.
I watched the trailer for the new transformers, it just looked so busy to me. I can't take the super-fast-ultra-zoomed camera work anymore. |

Star Trek, Harry Potter, Up, Time Traveller's Wife, Where The Wild Things Are... (I've been reading as little as possible and ignoring all discussion of the new Trek movie so I can go in without narrow expectations.)
I'm not really into the new terminator sequel, despite the slick trailers. To me, it just looks like a simple war movie. I need more than robots on my Sci fi. Inglorious bastards looks like a Troma film to me. No thanks EDIT Holy shit!! District 9

Okay, for a while, I've only really been looking forward to Star Trek.
But I recently saw the following trailer for a film starting Sam Rockwell. It looks amazing. I'm going to see it in the theatre. I'm not going to miss it. (Unless critics completely pan it.) Moon:

Moon and District 9 each seem like really decent science fiction films. It'd be nice to have real science fiction instead of explosions and bright, shiny computer generated graphics. Sunshine was good to hold me over for maybe 12 months. I'm looking forward to Terminator and Star Trek, but they're like champagne. I'm starved for pinot noir or zinfandel; something more substantial.

And for the first two acts, I thought Sunshine was a classic, but the third act was a bit of a let down. Not that it's not a great movie, but if the third act had matched the first two, it would be a true scifi classic.

I have seen all the other Star Trek movies so I might as well see this one. I like the cast so I hope they carry it.
I am super excited for Harry Potter because it is Harry Potter. The movies have been alright but I think that this movie could be really excellent. I am also excited for Julie and Julia. Meryl Streep and cooking, how can it lose.

I've always been a big fan of Pixar. Therefore I've been looking forward for their new movie Up for a while now.

+1 for Up and Harry Potter.
I'll go see Angels and Demons this week, but I've heard rumors that the ending has been changed quite a bit... Not sure how I feel about this, but I did enjoy the new ending in the Watchmen movie so I'll remain optimistic.

Wow. Just watched the District 9 trailer, and the start was a chilling reminder of the xenophobic tensions and attacks we had in South Africa last year....then as the trailer went on I recognised the accents and actors: South African. Clearly the movies is capitalising on that raw emotion and recent history, changing the "human xenophobia" to "alien xenophobia". I hope it delivers some hard-hitting social commentary, and is not just a vehicle for SF fluff.
