The Wire

Anyone watch this show? It just came on normal TV in the UK and its fantastic. I like the short stocky black copper (the one who smokes cigars) - but there are a lot of quality characters and the whole thing feels really gritty and intense.

Yeah, I watched the first few seasons on DVD. I got kind of tired of it by season 4 or so. It is gritty and hardcore. Really engaging cop drama with a look into the criminal underworld. It can leave you feeling dirty after watching a few episodes in a row. Fair warning.

The best way I can describe the series is that it's a filmed novel. Not a novel adapted to the screen, but something altogether different. As you watch, you'll notice that it's paced in a very literary way, as opposed to the typical cliffhanger approach that most TV uses (not that I have a problem with that style).

Wait until everythig changes in the second season. And changes again in the third. And who's still around at the end. It's awesome.

A friend of mine let me borrow season 1 a while ago, and I was immediately hooked. I bought the box set recently, and finished it. I've read people that say it is/was the best series on TV, and I tend to agree with that. I don't know anything that ran that long without getting stupid or cheesy at some point.

I wish I could un-watch it so I could watch it again!

After watching The Wire, it's hard to go back to one hour-case closed shows like CSI or basically every other detective drama on TV. They just feel more absurd solving everything in 45 minutes than the realistic, intriguing pace of The Wire.
