the Dragonball movie
so the dragonball movie release draws nigh. i've been watching every step of production of this abomination and the closer it's release comes, the more disillusioned i become with hollywood.
i, like pretty much ANY guy within 10 years age of me (up or down), fucking loved and grew up on dragonball and dragonball z. and now this movie is going to come out and not only are fan bois gonna be like "wut?", but it's gonna make the whole series and story look completely retarded, thereby polluting it's good name for the generations to come after us, since this movie will be the first thing they learn of dragonball, as i'm sure it will be long burried in the archives of pop culture 5-10 years from now. what do you guys think about the upcoming dragonball movie? |

it's going to be terrible, and it shouldn't ever be made unless an awesome crew gets a hold of it and it has great funding. neither happened this time around.
they are also 10 years too late like you said. DBZ is one of the best animes out there, if a tad repetitive. they should've released the animated movies (Tree of Might, World's Strongest, Dead Zone, etc.) in theaters - that would have made them a boat load of money.

I was never a fan of Dragonball Z, but I have ALL the dragonball videos on VHS, and I fucking LOVE them. The movie will suck like vampire with a vacuum in a black hole, but I'll probably go see it anyway.
To me, Dragonball is about Goku and Bulma trying to find the balls before Yamcha and Oolong and Emperor Pilaf do, and Master Yoshii and all that. |

I think a surefire way they could have made it a good movie was not to let the west make it. It would have had much more love if it was made in its native country!

Well Stephen Chow is the producer so I have some hope that it would be decent. His last several movies have broken Hong Kong box office records left and right.
I'm praying that it won't be another Forbidden Kingdom disaster....

when i first saw the trailer i wanted to stab myself in the face so that i wouldn't ever have to see the actual movie or any commercials for it.
then i realized that there are certain things you can't unsee. so i settled on crying and sending indignant e-mails with lots of capital letters, exclamation marks and ones.

What homoerotic child prostitution ring did Chow Yun Fat get caught up in that they could blackmail him into doing this steaming pile? And I thought the crimes that Uwe Boll must have caught Jason Statham doing to con him into starring in "In the Name of the King" were bad.

Other TV shows that shouldn't be made into movies:
Fear Factor Manimal According to Jim BayWatch Nights Look, I can appreciate what Dragonball was. It was a kid's show. Then it was a martial arts fantasy. Then it was unbelievably redundant. Then it ended. We don't need a movie to come in, rewrite cannon (and piss off people my age, who were crazy about the original), and produce a crappy CGI-fest. |

Nobody sets out to make a "bad" movie. They all start with the best of intentions which then, well, may not work out. It's an art or alchemy, not a science; even if it's a commercial one.

I never cared for dragonball as a kid, even though it was all the rage. I liked Knights of the Zodiac, when it was on.
So I feel bad for you guys, even though I don't suffer from this one, there's a bunch of movie adaptations that have left me wanting to dig my thumbs in the director's eyes. I'm looking at you, batman 3 & 4, X-men 3, Spidey 3, and anything by Uwe Boll.

Ugh, I'm getting a definite Speed Racer/ Forbidden Kingdom vibe from the trailer. I was such a die-hard dragonball and dbZ fan in grade school, had manga issues from freeza all the way to majin buu. Watched the cheesy 1989 movie as well as all the animated films. Had the laminated posters, the cloth scrolls, cut and died my hair to match Trunks too! Like what Fresnelly said, they probably originally started out with something true to the story. Then the studio probably came in and started making "suggestions" to the story and the casting. (Roshi can't be a pervert, put Goku in high school for teenage shenanigans). I don't know how the film will do now that most fans seem discouraged by it, but I guess it'll be big with kids once action figures and light up dragonballs and fireballs start hitting stores.
Why do I feel like I'm going to have the same reaction when Keanu's Cowboy Bebop movie comes out? Last edited by evilbeefchan; 01-30-2009 at 12:04 AM.. |

I loved Dragonball and DBZ while I was in High School but this is a slap in the face. I was in love with it, and I could watch it still again. I probably will love the movie because I loved the whole concept behind the show. Although, I've been looking for the movie set in English for a long time (DragonBall, DBZ and DB GT). I still think Goku needs to be way more younger and it'll be "westernized" to appeal to North America.
