Harry Potter: The Tales of Beedle the Bard

Potter fairytales to be published
A collection of fairytales penned by Harry Potter author JK Rowling is to be published to raise money for a children's charity.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which Rowling first mentioned in The Deathly Hallows, will go on sale on 4 December.

A handwritten copy of the book was sold at auction for £1.95m last year.

Rowling wrote and illustrated seven copies of the book, but offered only one for sale. It was thought the book would never be published.

Collector's edition

British charity the Children's High Level Group (CHLG), which was founded by Rowling and Baroness Emma Nicholson to help vulnerable children across Europe, will publish three editions of the book.

Bloomsbury and Scholastic will publish a £6.99 edition, featuring additional commentary on each fairytale from Professor Dumbledore, and an introduction by Rowling.

Amazon, who bought the handwritten copy at auction last year, will produce a maximum of 100,000 Collector's Edition copies aimed at replicating the look and feel of the original tales.

"There was understandable disappointment among Harry Potter fans when only one copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard was offered to the public last December," said Rowling.

"I am therefore delighted to announce that, thanks to the generous support of Bloomsbury, Scholastic and Amazon - and with the blessing of the wonderful people who own the other six original books - The Tales of Beedle the Bard will now be widely available to all Harry Potter fans."

In the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Hermione Grainger is given a copy of the book – a collection of fairytales – by Albus Dumbledore to help in the quest to defeat Lord Voldemort.
Those of you who were sad to see that they wouldn't get their hands on this story will be glad to know that they announced this morning a general public release of these tales.

I'm sure there are a number of you muggles out there who are going to be excited about this announcement... Me, I've still got to finish HP7.

Sweet!!
I've just started re-reading the last book and last night I hit the part where the Tales of Beedle the Bard first make their appearance.

I'll definitely be getting a copy when it comes out over here.

$100 a pop at 100,000. That's... a lot of cash.

I saw the book on Amazon though and I will say it does look cool. You don't often find the leatherbound embossed look even in hardcover books anymore.

I am thinking of pre-ordering this book, but I think I am willing to spend $100 just to read a book that was mentioned in Book 7.

$20 says they'll come out with a cheaper hardcover and/or paperback version a few months later. Or whenever the next convenient holiday is approaching.

George Lucas is a wise teacher.

Or... simultaneously with the full-priced one.

I know which version we may be getting... HP was always given out to the employees the day after it was released to the public, of course when released on Friday it was given on Monday.

Interestingly enough, I have a Chinese softcover bootleg of HP7 sitting on my shelf.

I tried to fix the links, but eh, have to figure out what on the back end is not happening properly.

Ah Harry Potter and the Endless Pile of Money.

Is anyone really surprised that this is coming out? I mean, honestly? You didn't really think that they'd pass up the opportunity to cash in on all the slavering fans who whimpered when this came out the first time.

I'm with Redjake and Lasereth. Book 7 didn't do a whole lot for me. I think this book might hold more appeal if it had more importance throughout the entire series instead of being the magic answer that appeared in Deathly Hallows, but I think that's generally how I feel about the series. Far too much suddenly appeared when it was convenient instead of being a thread that existed all the way from start to finish.

I think book 7 was passable, barely. Spoiler: The search for the deathly hallows was mind numbingly boring, and the whole wand thing was kind of useless, other than to demonstrate Snape's true intention, which we pretty much knew anyway.

Also, and this probably sounds really stupid, I thought having Voldemort lie about Harry's willingness to submit himself was kind of shoddy.

Um, can I let people know the ending of Ivanhoe?

I think I've read HP7 four times now.

Sure, just don't tell anyone what Rosebud means. I guess it has some readability then since if it was such a dog in the eyes of some, why waste time reading it 4 times.

It isn't about someone caring more about HP or not. Seriously, it's just being considerate without being over the top. Personally, I don't care, but there are others that may who are just discovering the books. No one was acting like an ass about it, in fact all that I did was cover his exact statement with a spoiler tag.

To give you an idea, the trade back doesn't come out until next year, which are those largish softcovers. I prefer to read those which is why I've not read HP7. I tried to read the one they gave us, but I don't like carrying or holding hardcover books for fun reading. There will be another surge of sales for another group of people who still have yet to read HP7. Every year that the movies were release a surge of sales for the books happened, these are new generally new readers as they come from the Book Clubs and Book Fairs with some trade sales trying to catch up to the movies.

I was an English major. Reading critically has been drummed into me. There were stretches that I just don't understand what Rowling was thinking. Anyways, it's loads better than Silas Marner. I could kill Eppie for existing.

Rosebud was a sled. It was an allegory for the only time in Hearst's life he was truly happy.
