Flashpoint - CBC

The SRU team is also unique; they rescue hostages, bust gangs, defuse bombs, climb buildings, see through walls and talk down suicidal teens. It takes years on the street, intense physical conditioning and elite marksmanship to qualify for the SRU. They have to prove that they're at the top of their game on a daily basis - because if they're not, there are hundreds of others willing to step in and take their place.

The team uses state-of-the-art equipment - sniper rifles, snake-cameras, robots, flash-bangs, night-vision and Tasers. But beyond all of the cool gadgetry, the most important weapons in their arsenal are human intuition, a gift for words and their ability to read emotion. Each team member is uniquely trained in negotiating, profiling and getting inside a subject's head. They stand out because of the rare balance between lethal hardware and people skills: pure muscle and pure intuition. They're the envy of law enforcement everywhere.

The stakes are always high in Flashpoint -- only here, the lives of the men and women on the team are also always on the line. That's the nature of the job.

The SRU may be heroes, but they are also human. At the end of the day, they each go home haunted by what they've seen, by what they've had to do - pursued by new demons which they cram into already bulging closets. They lock down emotion and they second-guess decisions made in the heat of the moment. These individuals are constant witnesses to the extremes of human distress. Not everyone is cut out for this.

If you're a cop, you're three times more likely to kill yourself than to be killed by a bad guy.
Has anyone watched this show? I'm completely hooked on it! Episode 3 is starting up right now on CTV, however its also shown on CBS for you American viewers, not sure what channel it is for CBS though. Any other fans or just me so far?

I find it interesting. It's definitely not an American show though. As far as I can tell, it's more dedicated to depicting tactics, gear, etc. in a more realistic manner, which I enjoy. I also enjoy Amy Jo Johnson, she's a hottie. There's something about a woman who knows how to use a high-powered rifle.

The trades are saying that the ratings on this program are actually quite solid. It's the first Canadian program to air in US network prime time since Due South was on CBS. It's also the first series shot in Toronto to actually play Toronto that was made for a US audience.

I'd be interested to hear US thoughts on the show.

By the way... there were two of these made in Canada shows licensed for US network prime time. It happened the during the writers strike... The other is called the Listener. It should be coming out soon.

I wondered what town it was set in. I knew it was Canada since they have maple leaves on their uniforms and the sergeant's chevrons are upside-down. I'd honestly have rather had it set in an American city, but it really doesn't matter to me.

As for the power bow, I have no idea. I know that I was a big fan of Power Rangers as a little kid, but I don't remember a damn thing about the show.

Oh common, can't you let us Canucks have one damn good show? We put up with all the America spamming that hits our TV's, let us be proud of something too. We only really have Corner Gas, Trailer Park Boys, and now this as it is!

The funny thing is that many of the television hits that are set in American cities, were filmed in Toronto and Vancouver (the X Files being the one that immediately springs to mind).

Again, it really doesn't matter. I just like to be able turn off my brain when I watch primetime television and it helps when I get to root for America. But really, the most important part is that there is a hot girl with a high powered rifle.

i totally didn't recognize amy jo johnson! time has not been cruel to her at all!

i've seen all the episodes of flashpoint so far, and i've dug it. the one thing i didn't care for was the way they brought the new team member in, making him a "doesn't follow the rules/can't be trusted" character. seems like a bit early in the series to add that kind of drama/tension.

I've just seen the one episode (drug dealer in the loft apt who ends up killing a kid). I found it to be frustrating to watch because the police were inept. And then they had to go the route of the tired old "angst ridden veteran (Afghanistan in this case) dealing with past issues" chestnut.

But on the other hand the plot engaged me and it was refreshing to see that my hometown was infact playing itself. I did notice that the shoulder patches said Metropolitan Police. I'll have to check today to see if that is still the case as I thought amalgamation of the boroughs/cities did away with that level of government.

Its not meant to be absolutely correct. They did change a few aspects of the show such as the name of the unit, what the shoulder patches say and some of the slang they use.
