I have to agree with the idea that the fascination with fake and staged horror and manipulative music is driven by fear. There's plenty of unstaged footage from Nagasaki and Hiroshima that people don't ordinarily watch. You have to go out of your way to see it, and people generally don't. Why?

I also agree with the sentiment that the nightly news is disturbing enough. Racism, illogical analysis, gestural politics posing as substance, phony presidential "debates", monkeys in codpieces in front of "Mission Accomplished" banners... That we get much of our info via that pipe is also disturbing.

Good point.

There was a really good documentary made on 1960's and 1970's horror movies...although I can't remember the name of it now...but it had interviews with the filmmakers who all credited, in retrospect, their exposure to the Vietnam War as their inspiration for creating their horrific visions of culture in decay.

I guess today's need for even more heightened sadistic experiences is indicative of something more...that I prefer not to think about.
