South Park

Anyone watch it religiously as I do?

Just want to say, the episode tonight was AMAZING. This season is proving to be a good one.

RetroGunslinger 03-26-2008 11:07 PM

I don't watch much TV anymore, but South Park is one of my favorite shows. I used to watch it religiously, when it came on at like 10:00 every night, but since then I can never keep up with things.

i love south park. it has never once seemed like it has gotten mundane.

haha yeah, last nights was great.

i need to visit the heavy metal style "boobland" with kenny one of these days

Beefcake. Beeefcakkkeeeee!

Is it so unfashionable these days to want a tv show that doesn't involve an elimination round or a panel of judges?

South Park is one of the last bastions of actual storytelling on TV.

That said, I don't like it when South Park sucker-punches you with violence and gore as a gag. I get that they use violence to mess with your expectations or poke fun at hollywood conventions, but it sickens me rather than humours me.

I'm the same with Robot Chicken and Family Guy and you can bet I won't be seeing Michael Haneke's Funny Games anytime soon.

My favourite episodes are the ones where they don't resort to ribs bursting through skin or massive headwounds for laughs.

Butters is awesome!

ÐiGiRed 03-27-2008 05:41 AM

I love South Park, it's one of my favs. I didn't catch the episode you guys are talking about.. but I saw the previews for it.. looked pretty funny..

Mondak 03-27-2008 08:27 AM

I still find it funny as hell. The best episodes are the ones where they basically do the entire half hour (or 22 min if you have a DVR) to tell ONE JOKE! You find yourself asking about halfway through, "Where are they going with this?" and then you laugh your ass off when they get there. There was a two parter on the catholic church that was awesome in that way a couple years back.

The other thing that is AMAZING is how timely they can be. I remember when Saddam Hussein was captured I was watching it on TV on a Sunday morning. Wednesday night: the episode revolved around pulling Saddam out of a spider hole. No idea how they do that. Same thing in lots of other situations but I remember they had Janet Reno dressed as an Easter Bunny pulling Elian Gonzalez out of a closet in the same lead time. Unreal.

It will be interesting in say 50 years for folks to look back at South Park and hear what they have to say. I know the timelyness will be lost.

from what I remember working with them at Comedy Central, is that they make the episodes over the weekend for air that following Wednesday. They can still make insertions into the episode directly at the network operations center up to a few hours before air.

I enjoy watching them when I get the chance. It's not on my Tivo list since I have plenty of other things to do and twitch when the Tivo gets full.

Unfortunately my schedule doesn't let me catch it every week, but it is by far one of the smartest, funniest shows out there right now, and continues to get better with age.

This past Brittany Spears episode was absolutely priceless. And I'm HIV Positive that I loved the week before.

I love this too.

This is the best one:

Beginning of episode:

Stan: I'm a vegetarian.

Cartman: What? People who don't eat meat are giant pussies.

End of episode:

Doctor: Stan has what is called pussitis caused by not eating any meat. These lesions all over his body are actually tiny vaginas. They will continue to grow until eventually Stan will become a giant pussy.

Haha

MexicanOnABike 03-27-2008 04:49 PM

Honestly, I found the Britney episode to be a total and complete flop. Most of the "special guest star" episodes turn out to be, in my opinion. I don't think I laughed once during the entire thing and spent most of it being horrified at the basic premise. Not because I have any great love for Britney Spears, but just because it was awful to watch. Haven't seen this week's, but it did look entertaining.

radioguy 03-27-2008 07:02 PM

last nights south park was the first one of the season that i have laughed at....not happy so far with the new episodes...

aberkok 03-27-2008 07:30 PM

I'm a huge fan. As much as I don't particularly laugh at the audacious gore, satirical racism, etc. it rarely fails to amaze me. It very often has my jaw on the floor with disbelief at how far they go.

I also think Butters is awesome and I'm glad he's always around now.

Derwood 03-30-2008 06:11 AM

the Oprah episode was the worst ever. they had about 4 minutes worth of material on the book scandal, and then just went off on an extraordinary unfunny tangent for the rest of the time

MexicanOnABike 04-01-2008 02:25 PM

agreed. i think the episodes where the boys are not the main part are the worst ones. like the oprah one. the Paris hilton was pretty funny though.

Actually, that's why it worked so well for me. I've had fun ripping on the Britster for the last year or so, but the boys told some real truth in the episode and made me think about a few things. That's good television in my mind.

Then the Heavy Metal homage made me laugh my ass off. God, I forgot how much I dug that movie. The parody was spot on.

Ustwo 04-02-2008 12:30 PM

Anyone who saw any of the original heavy metal cartoons had to get a kick out of the last one.

Plus I wonder how many kids are trying to put cat piss in their face.

My favorite season is probably 7, for the Raisins episode and when the boys make a Christian rock band.

"Please mom and dad don't sell me to Paris Hilton"~ Butters
