Dane Cook - Spiral (Short Film)
 

I came across this short Dane Cook made in 1998 I believe it said. I loved his act when he was still "undiscovered". I thought that Retaliation was good, but not up to the hype. Vicious Circle, I did enjoy though. Anyway . . . having said that, this is a very dark short film that he made. I am really impressed with it. Check it out if you get a minute or twenty. it's student film quality at best. kinda sad that Cook is by far the best actor in the film.

Yeah I acted in a bit of student film work for studying directors at an arts school and I thought the quality of writing, editing, producing, and most importantly acting was not that impressive. Dane probably has a very good range, most comedians are not only intelligent but incredibly dark. Look at Sandler's transition to Punch Drunk Love. I just watched him in Dan In Real Life and thought Dane played it incredibly vulnerable and he played very well in an ensemble cast; I find most comedians dedicate themselves to stealing focus, which usually results in a very shitty movie. He definitely has potential. This doesn't show it though.

I hate to jump in a thread just to bash the subject, but man oh man Dane Cook is just that unfunny. I simply cannot fathom his popularity. I mean, I understand that he is just about the hardest working man in stand-up comedy and really innovative in his marketing, in that he was one of the first comedians to really exploit the internet.

But.

That man is completely, utterly, and exhaustingly not funny. What am I missing?

P.S. Joss Whedon commented on his DVD commentary for Serenity that he likes to cast comedians in serious roles because the hardest acting is comedic acting, and if you can master that you can do anything. It's certainly possible Cook can one day become a serious actor, and he obviously has charisma. But he's monumentally not funny and his movies so far have been the most embarrassing pieces of Hollywood drek.

Humor is opinion based. You cannot make a post so factually, so we'll just leave it as "I think" he's unfunny.
