tin man on sci fi channel (some spoilers)
saw it last night, the second part is on tonight.
i liked it. nice take on the oz story. oz is the "outer zone" who are aware of our world. tin man is a cop, "dorothy" is actually from the "outer zone" but didn't know it, and has to go back to save oz from the wicked witch, who turns out to be her sister. ok, so i like cheesy crappy sci fi. i liked it. i can't wait to find out what happens (as if i didn't know, it's not like you didn't see most of the stuff coming, so the spoilers weren't really that spoilerific, but i warned just in case) anyone else watch the whole thing and planning on watching the rest of it? |
It didn't hook me. The acting was flat, the writing really lacks originality, and I found myself changing the channel.

Set an alarm. Tried soooo hard to watch it.
Ended up watching most of America's Most Smartest Model and The Shot on VH1 instead. So much crappy acting, so much bad photography, and such terrible GFX that I thought I was watching a Xena Warrior Princess spinoff...and even that sells Xena a little short. It reminded me more of a weirdly themed softcore Cinemax porno that never got around to the excuse for getting everyone naked--the flat acting, bad dramatic timing, and generic score probably contributed to that the most. So dissapointing. |
About the same response here - Started watching, got about 1.5 hours into it, and decided the bed was a better place to fall asleep than the couch and turned it off.

I am looking forward to this whenever it finally plays here... the still images I've seen looked good.

Also I think they had the flying monkeys do the costume design. |

Visually I'm impressed so far, but the acting couldn't be flatter. I think it's a directing problem, because I've seen many of these people previously and they were much warmer and more engaging, so that's too bad. I was certainly looking forward to it and, while it remains nice eye candy, it's not everything it could've been.

I agree that it's a directing issue. The story is really well written, and the visuals are impressive.
The acting is just flat, and the cinematography and editing do not go together well. If it was filmed differently, or cut differently, it might work. At this time, though, it seems those two departments didn't talk to each other, and each planned a different pace and feel for the movie. |
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Not exceptional, but it's the best new thing I've seen on television in a while.

the chick playing DG reminds me of ellen muth, the chick from "Dead like me" a LOT, i thought it was her for a moment.
allan cumming, richard dreyfuss, Zooey Deschanel, they have some big names, you would think it would be better. yeah, the acting is a bit weak, but i still like the story. i dig cheesy, crappy sci-fi..... |
I think it's pretty fair to classify it as cheesy B-grade fantasy fare. The effects were certainly well above average, as was the cast, but the script/directing/acting didn't quite elevate it out of "SciFi channel miniseries land" though I think it really had the potential to be more than that. I did enjoy the story and the new take and I definitely enjoyed the twist on her sister. I thought that the third segment had some really wonderful scenes and reveals that the first two lacked.
Glad I watched and if I was channel surfing in the future I'd probably leave it on again, but not going to end up on my to buy list. On a side note, I'm surprised she reminds you of Ellen Muth. Zooey doesn't look or act much like Ellen, in my opinion. What was it that had you thinking it was her? On a double side note, Dead Like Me returns in video format in the next year minus Mandy plus some dude whose name I don't recognize. I'm both thrilled and terrified. |
Just watched the first "episode", then deleted the other 2 from the DVR without watching them.
Is there anything that Zooey is good in? The only two other things I have seen her in was Hitchhikers and Terabithia. Her part was pretty small in Terabithia, so I can't really count that. But I thought she was pretty awful in HGTTG, but I chalked that up to the dreadful mess that movie was. Now with "Tin Man", I'm not so sure that the problem isn't just with her. Everytime she opened her mouth, it was like some bad grade-school play. As far as the visuals go, I thought the scenery shots were nice, but the creature/magic effects were pretty lacking. When there are better effects in TV series Like Stargate, BSG, Supernatural, etc, then something is not right. I don't know if the plot was disinteresting to me because of the poor acting, or if I just didn't like the writing at all, but I couldn't have cared less about any of the characters. Also, I guess I was expecting something a bit darker and more creative. like a combo of "Wicked" and the "Abandoned American McGee Oz project" So overall, a big "thumbs down" from me. |

Whenever a character said "THE O-Z," I wanted to grate my ears off. Even when muted, the way they overemphasize the letters upped the cheesiness by 100.

Speaking as a fan of the original Wizard of Oz movie, I'm always happy to watch new twists on an old tale. I personally liked it, just for the reason that it was a new take on the old Oz.
