I haven't seen it yet, but in the last book some foreshadowing was done, and my guess is... no, I won't do that. I'd hate it if I were right.

Snape falls into his own cauldron, but returns in the next book as the new ghost of Slytherin.

You obviously care enough about the book to start the thread.
Nice try.
The only reason I can think that you want to know otherwise is that you want to spoil for everyone else.

I just read the first topic starter's post. Could the mods please put a spoiler heading on this thread? I just started reading the book and am loving it, quite dark and mysterious and absolutely cannot wait until Dumbledore says his much publicised line "Sit down Harry, I am going to tell you everything"

No way in hell am I reading any of the other posts here!!! I want the characters death to be a surprise despite my having a good idea who it may be. Anyway, back to the book!

Finished it today here too. And I'm not saying anything that'll spoil it. Masterfully written, though... dark and brooding... and as thick as the fantasy in the book is, JKR has really rendered some finely detailed and realistic characters.

How long until book 6 now?

Ditto, just finished it here too. It was not who I was expecting it to be, (Dumbledore, after comments in Book 4 about how he began to look thin and old) and there were some false leads spread earlier in the book as well. When the actual event occurred, it was something of a surprise and didn't feel real, which is exactly how these things are supposed to feel. I enjoyed it, but hope Harry's grown out of that teenage angst stage by the time the next book rolls around.

Agreed... Potter's angst-boy thing is kindof overdone. Then again, how can you begrudge him a little melancholy after what he's been through? I had that whole thing as a young lad as well... and that was just from growing up in bumfuck North Dakota

I finished the book yesterday and I loved it.....I would have been more upset if Mr. Weasley died though. Don't know why...guess I didn't really feel attached to the person that did die..
Oh and considering everything he's been through ...I also think he's allowed to be moody..

Finished it this morning (3 am). I was hoping for an all out war, but maybe the next book...
It was great and really exciting like the last four. My only compaint would be the climax. The whole "stop Voldermort" thing has gotten old. The plot is intricate and interesting and all... I even enjoy how Harry and the gang get from point A to point B... it's just that I know point B.
Of course, besides that one thing it was great.

finished it the day it came out. loved it, best of the series so far. i was really worried that after the 4th book, with the long wait, that this one was gonna let down really big, but i guess the book proved to be worth it. just hope she doesn't take too long to release the next one

Finished it over the weekend. I put everything else on the backburner; I was just too excited.

Overall I thought it was a very good book. It was kind of a filler/setup book as well. I compare it to The Empire Strikes Back (in my opinion, the best Star Wars movie) because nothing significant really happened and it's setting us up for a spectacular books six and seven.

I babble....anyway. I thought this book was just too angry. There was a lot of yelling. Everyone seemed to be mad all the time. Not a lot of funny, whimsical stuff that littered the first four just a lot of unbridled ALL CAPS!

She did get Umbridge right though, didn't she? You just hated her from the start and didn't even feel sorry for her in the end. And the stuff with Snape was pretty good too.

I realize I'm disjointed and rambling so I'll stop there...I just really enjoyed the book.

Spoilers below, but you should be expecting them from now on in this thread... go read the book already.

Nailed Umbridge. Excellent character development from the off. I just couldn't help but loathe her. I'm still a bit fuzzy about her motivation in sending the dementors after Harry, but other than that she was perfectly fitted for the story.

Snape was good as well... greasy and malevolent as ever, yet... I almost feel a twinge of pity for the old sap. You'd think Harry could at least give him a 'thanks' or something.

So, for those who've read the story... got a favorite line from the book? I know there are plenty to choose from in there.

One of my favs - "I'm trying to decide what curse to use on Malfoy, sir." Woot, the boy's growin up!

And how about that Luna? Totally reminds me of the girl on the bus at the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off

(Wish I could find a better picture)

"Harry, we saw Uranus up close!"

I heard book six is going to be out 2005. Rowling apparently started writing it right after she finished 5.

Actually about halfway through the book, all the characters were whining so much that I wouldn't have minded if they'd ALL died

I enjoyed the book, but the ending felt like a bit of an anticlimax to me. Kinda like the end of Matrix Reloaded. I know I'll be in a better position to judge the whole series once they are all written, but for me, the book didn't really FULFILL me in a way that books 3 or 4 did. Perhaps because of the sheer fricken length of it - IMHO it would have been a better book at 500+ pages, not 800+.

I'll re-read it soon - there's quite a few things that I think will make more sense upon second reading

My fave line is when they James and Sirius spot Snape

'This will liven you up, Padfoof, said James quietly. 'Look who it is...'
Sirius's head turned. He became very still, like a dog that has scented a rabbit.
'Excellent', he said softly 'Snivellus'

That was some of the best characterisation in the book.

For anyone who has read the book (i finished it in 2 days). I'm sorry, i know she got HURT in the end, but, that Dolores Umbridge bitch NEEDS TO DIE. i kept wanting Harry to just gauge her eye balls out with his wand, or something. just goes to show how nicely (or badly )the character was written.

Secondly, when Harry and (i think Fred) went apeshit on Draco, it was really satisfying. not so much because as Malfoy is written, people tend to hate him, (though that is part of it), but also because it lends me some relief that these people aren't above human reactions, sure, they can be conniving and cruel and think of a dirty spell that will really humble or embarrass it's recipient, but they aren't above just plain getting angry and beating the shit out of somebody who deserves it.

Man, I loved that book. I like it how she is not giving in to the pressure to make it "suitable to younger audiences" from the movie industry. IMO this one has been the best. The guys death kinda bummed me out, and yea, I couldn't help but feel sorry for snape; Umbridge on the other hand, that bitch. I was hoping the centaurs had killed her. Sorry, but I just hated her.

Excellent book, though I think the person they killed off should have had a more honourable death scene.

Also it seemed as though Rowling knew that the publishers would let out that someone dies in this one because there are a large number of moments where you think someone has just been killed and they turn out not to.

Well, I'll only say the obvious thing to those of you who have read it (without giving anything away).

It's obvious to me that Rowling has left it wide open for him to come back, since we only *think* we know that he died when what happened happened.

Well apparently she said it brought her to tears killing off that character. Maybe he/she'll come back somehow but it is unlikely. I just wish she explained how that would've killed the character.

I was a little put off by his "death" to be quite honest.

I remember reading that interview where she was "in tears" so I kept waiting for a major character to dive off.

He died without much of an explanation and I wouldn't even consider him a major character. He was a colorful bit player at best until he's forced on us in the recent book and then he dies.

It kind of left me with a feeling of "eh?"
