Lars and the Real Girl
Having read the thread/watched the real girl documentary a few weeks ago, I was rather surprised to hear of an upcoming move, "Lars and the Real Girl."
"Lars (Ryan Gosling) is an awkwardly shy young man in a small nothern town who finally brings home the girl of his dreams to his brother and sister-in-law's home. The only problem is that she's not real - she's a sex doll Lars ordered off the internet. But sex is not what Lars has in mind, but rather a deep, meaningful relationship. His sister-in-law is worried for him, his brother thinks he's nuts, but eventually the entire town goes along with his delusion in support of this sweet natured boy that they've always loved." What do you fellow TFP'ers think about this? Is it going to help some of us better understand the real doll relationship? Or is it going to emphasize the creepiness of it all when moviegoers discover that people out there ACTUALLY hold intimate relationships with dolls? |

I liked this movie. Actually, I'm pretty sure the only way I will find the perfect girl is to order one off the internet now.
Trust issues and being afraid of getting hurt should have been brought up though. And they ended it about 5 minutes too early. Did anything happen between those two? And they had a perfect cast and some great acting. The single girl was really cute. Last edited by ASU2003; 08-23-2008 at 06:32 PM.. |

First off, I think we should put a spoilers tag on this thread.
Secondly, I loved the movie myself. I really don't think the message it was trying to convey was anything about relationships between people and real dolls, as he never used it for sexual purposes. It was more of a catalyst for him to express his emotional state and work things out. Great movie, 5/5 from me!

It was hard to suspend my disbelief that a WHOLE TOWN would be okay with it, and even treat Bianca as a person, but once I did...
I found it really touching. Like, how the girls were giving her makeovers, and the guys would dance with her.

As someone who grew up in a small town, and I've been to smaller towns around the location they picked, I could believe it. People in small towns are nosy, but they are accepting as long as you are a good person. I never really thought about it once they did.
