Survivor: China

The cast list isnt up yet (due up on August 20th), but the premier is Thursday Sept 20

Im SO looking forward to this one...the different cultural aspect is going to be awesome, I loved Africa for the same reason. Jeff claims his is the first full show ever filmed in china and Mark Burnett says there is no exile island but there is a hidden immunity.

Unlike the previous seasons, the “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast” slogan in the show's logo has been replaced by Chinese characters. The characters translate to: Compete in intelligence (比智慧, bĭ zhìhuì), compete in skill (比技巧, bĭ jìqiǎo), compete in endurance (比耐力, bĭ nàilì)

I have *read*, dont know if its true that they are filming two season in China, a regular cast one and an all stars one. I also read they asked Yau-Man to do all starts and he turned it down...and because of the relationship with Jeff, Julie Berry cant be on it(rumor has it they are secretly married...but who knows for sure)

So excited for this one!

I dont know how reliable this is (guess we'll find out in a week) but this site says these are the "possible" candidates

I don't get the premise for Survivor, or I have not grasped it yet... I have never watched a single episode but I think the fundamentals are: this is a gameshow; this is a reality show; this is a competition among a cast of participants; the difficulty lies within working as a whole yet never failing to realize that only one can win; it is a contest to "survive" in remote areas of the globe; no amenities are afforded, other than bare minimum for some(feminine hygiene); a running syndication of many locations that does not end until all the participants save one are eliminated; awarded top prize of $1 million?

Survivor. :skeptical:

ShaniFaye 08-13-2007 03:40 PM

on paper yes, thats it in a nutshell, but a non watcher would have as much understanding of the whole gist of it from an explanation like that as would a blind person understanding the explanation of a rainbow.

We get you dont care about the show....this thread, just like all the others for the past survivors are for fans of the show to discuss it.

If someone wants to poopoo reality shows Im sure a debate on them elsewhere would get a lot of attention :)

I am not casting it aside, as much as questioning the logic of it.

Surviving is possible anywhere, but when forced to complete tasks that hold no bearing to it, and when no one is allowed to die, well... it is much more about 'occupying' and 'unfamiliarizing'.

I just needed to jot those points down as a reference for myself to question if I should care to participate in it.

If you care to, I have come across syndications in other countries where the term 'Survivor' fits more aptly.

This new upcoming season definately promises to be interesting. I can't wait to see it either.

What's the challenge? Living in the foul pollution of Chinese waste and smog?

Smiles abound. :D

Yet disturbed enough to suspect how the Olympics will fare next year.

The People's Republic of China is vast; will they be staying in a single location/habitat to 'survive'?

kutulu 08-16-2007 11:10 AM

Jetstream, why are you trolling this thread?

I hope it is, some great eye candy in there. That's definitely something they have lacked the last few seasons.

The show is called Survivor because you're not only trying to survive in poor living conditions, also to survive the game. It's more of a game show than a survival show for sure. It's lasted as long as it has because you never know how people will deal with the differing aspects of the game, including being on teams with people you don't like (but have to spend 24/7 with), advancing in the game with/without betraying trust, and, in the end, getting people who you've had a hand in eliminating to vote for you and give you the money.

In 15 seasons, it has rarely disappointed

I agree wholeheartedly!

I'm waiting for Survivor Antarctica. Where the contestants don't get voted off, they will beg to get off. The last one left wins.

Or have one where everyone speaks a different language. That would make it interesting.

That does not sound like an endearing term... :|

Whatever that may mean, I mean no disrespect in my effort to gain an insight into the workings of this show. As I detailed above, I have not seen nor understand the show; that is why I posted here, so that someone as helpful as Derwood could rationally explain it in the simplest form possible for me to finally grasp the show's allure and popularity.

kutulu 08-22-2007 11:32 AM

They have gone from the 4/4/4/4 white/latino/black/asian to the more standard all white plus token m/f reps for the other races.

Reese 08-22-2007 02:21 PM

Jetstream, CBS.com has the entire 14th season on their website to watch. There's your chance to watch it for yourself, It's fast and free and the quality is decent for streaming video. It's not my favorite season, but It's enjoyable.

willynilly 08-23-2007 08:00 PM

Jetstream,

I watched roughly the first nine seasons religously. Most of it was great. I even watched the first episode while packing for Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. After nine seasons, I was bored. But it was great TV for awhile. I won't watch it again at this point, but when it first came out it was fun. Then it got formulaic. Also, the rise of the mediocrity got tiresome. "Let's eliminate the competent people because they are a threat for immunity." Some might see it as a reflection of our current political system. Maybe this is Mark Burnett's big joke.

kutulu 08-24-2007 08:12 AM

The common thing in all seasons that has really bothered me lately is that I hate seeing people fail to seize the game when they have the chance.

ShaniFaye 08-24-2007 10:38 AM

This last season, to me was the best one in awhile....Dreamz, much as I hated him, really played the game

Probst has been quoted as saying he hated last season, and thought it was a huge mistake to give one tribe everything and the other tribe nothing

promising start, but nothing earth shattering

Daval 09-21-2007 04:15 AM

I was hoping that the mullet wearing lunch lady or chicken guy would leave. I was not dissapointed.

I was actually rooting for Ashley going into survivor, I figured with the wrestling background she would be super competitive and have a great work ethic.... I hope i'm not wrong. She was indeed sick and I'll give her a pass for that. Those liprings though have to go, ugh.

And the fact that she is getting a lot of screen time now makes me think she's on her way out soon :P

Lady Sage 09-21-2007 04:30 AM

I caught a brief shining moment of this... interesting show at a friends house.

What on earth is with the training bra wearing DD jugs? How many nip-slips are there to be? Didnt Janet Jackson once get brained for a nip-slip at the fabled super bowl?

i'm sure the producers were pissed that Chicken was first out, though. he was clearly cast for a lot of face time.

Lady Sage 09-21-2007 08:49 AM

What little time I spent watching it, Chicken was an asshole-know-it-all. I know some of those IRL and online. Best to cull them out first. He was the one I wanted to see off.

kutulu 09-21-2007 09:27 AM

The next one I want gone was that bitchy waitress from NY. Did you see her attitude during the ceremonies at the start? After that, she started talking all kinds of shit about the rest of the tribe.

Reese 09-21-2007 10:03 AM

My First impressions..

Chicken - I really wanted to like the wise country boy that could pull through when all the city folk were scratching their heads.. Turns out he wasn't that person.. Glad to see him go.

Courtney.. Meh.. She's a hot anorexic chick but.. she's an ass.. hate her..

Peih-Gee She's a bossy know it all and clearly wants to be the leader of the tribe but I doubt anyone will listen. I can see her and Dave kinda having a power struggle..

I'm liking Sherea, because well.. she did the first challenge in her bra.. and We share a birthday, She's 1 year older than me :)

That's all I can really think of right now.. All the other people aren't even recognizable to me yet..

kutulu 09-21-2007 02:22 PM

I didn't get the impression that Peih-Gee wanted to be a boss but if you look at the tribe they were a train wreck the first couple of days. Nobody was doing anything productive and she took it upon herself to assume a leadership role.

Chicken pissed me off. The guy talked all kinds of shit about how he knew how to build a shelter but didn't want to do actually take charge and use an obvious strength he had.

I don't know if Ashley will be a good contestant or not but she is hot as hell. I want her to stick around for a long time.

Jetée 09-22-2007 05:44 PM

I'll have to admit it: I waas not displeased by the first episode.

Even though it was my FIRST time watching a Survivor episode, I can better now understand the allure to the entire syndication. The one thing that throws me off and is somewhat displeasing is the social interaction and 'gaming' mindset all the contestants are required to constantly wear.
I see that as a possible hindrance for my boy, James. :(

Great start, but I don't expect to watch much of it, since I don't care much for TV, but I'll keep myself tuned to this thread for updates.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2007 05:50 PM

I am SO glad they voted chicken out....I was hoping for so much more for them. I dont think they should have held one day of being sick against Ashley....if it had been the whole 3 days I'd have felt different. I think she can be an asset in challenges simply because of her WWE training.

Im glad they have gone back to some of the older ways....rice for everybody, fire at tribal council even though they havent earned it.

oh and is Jeff's snuffer not just the coolest!!

Im sorry Im a christian, but I think it would have been very cool to be in on that ceremony, specially since Jeff specified it wasnt a worship service, that non religious christian radio woman made me want to slap her, just as much as that chick from new york. explain to me HOW you could be in the midst of that and not just be totally awed on how they handle things....even if I were not a believer in anything, I think I would have thought it was neat and had been glad to have had the experience

Reese 09-22-2007 09:52 PM

I don't know.. I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable bowing down to any Deity other than my own no matter if it's a worship ceremony or a greeting ceremony. I really can't fault her for that. She didn't do anything else that I really remember so I'll wait to see before passing and judgments her way.

I don't remember who it was, but they went up to Ashley and said something like Don't think we're gonna vote you off because of this, don't worry about it.. Then when talking to the camera said Ashley's the first to go because she's sick.. I think it was Dave... I don't trust him :)

Lady Sage 09-23-2007 06:53 AM

I am as far from christian as I can get -BUT I have been to several churches. I sit there and behave myself out of respect for the person who drug me along.

No, the churches dont burn down when I walk in.

She could have at least been respectful.

Reese 09-23-2007 11:54 AM

Sitting in a pew and getting on your knees and bowing down, clasping your hands together as if to pray isn't exactly the same thing. You may not have a problem doing that because you have no conflicting interests. Her beliefs tell her that bowing down to any other god is a sin. She felt she couldn't just go along with it. They could have been respectful not asked her to do such a thing. Yah he said it wasn't a worship ceremony but it damn sure looked like it.

Lady Sage 09-23-2007 11:55 AM

Why couldnt she have bowed down and prayed to her own god in her head?
