I'm not sure if this has been said already, but if you enjoyed the Matrix movies be sure to check out The Thirteenth Floor -- it is a great movie which is similar to the Matrix trilogy (more similar than you may want to admit), and although it has a lot of no-name actors in it, it is pretty high quality.

I thought it was an interesting movie, but it left a bit much to be desired. Concept was interesting, but needed to be explored a bit more.

They were made concurrently. Interesting how two australian made movies could be made in such close proximity to each other and released at nearly the same time and not have known about the other.

Oh yes, and it was a very good flick as well. The male protagonist you'll recall as playing a totally over-the-top villian in 'The Long Kiss Goodnight'.

Didn't that movie have Gretchen Mol in it? She is hot. The movie was OK, but the first Matrix was 100 times better, IMO.

If you want a movie that's nearly identical to the Matrix and came out like a year before it, watch Dark City

The Matrix was still far better, though.

actually the industry is very small. Ideas go around that are similar to each other all the time usually getting green lit in response to each other. That is the reason why you usually see similar things released around the same time. Competition is fierce so everyone is counting on the "next big thing"

People are always making comparisons bewtween "The Matrix" and "Dark City". I don't see it, though.

The only similarity I see, is John Murdoch's ability to change his enviornment, like Neo.

Another great flick, highly recommended. Alex Proyas (director of Crow and Dark City) put me in the seats for a while back there, lately he's been pretty flaky behind the camera...

Yeah, the Matrix trilogy is what The Thirteenth Floor should have been. It is still a good reference for those who still don't understand the matrix-within-a-matrix idea, though.

If you're more of an action guy, I recommend Equilibrium. I found both it and the Matrix similar in style, though both are very original. It's tough to explain, but since everyone was making storyline similarities, I thought I'd make an action similarity.
