Dexter on Showtime

This show is pretty damn good so far. Any theories on who the refrigerator truck killer is? I think it could be Dexter's sis..

Toaster126 11-01-2006 02:11 AM

That would shock me...

I've seen the first four episodes of this series. It's actually pretty entertaining.

Nikilidstrom 11-01-2006 10:35 AM

This is currently my favorite show. I really can't speculate who the killer is. The sis just doent fit in my mind, but I've been wrong before.

I really wish they weren't going to start the "sis begins to track down a killer without knowing its actually her borther" story line already. I knew it was coming since the first episode, I was just hoping it wouldn't be till next season. I would think that something like that would be more of a series finally type story arc.

fresnelly 11-02-2006 06:14 AM

I just read the book, and I know exactly who the Killer is.

No, I'm not telling. :D

Halx 11-02-2006 08:46 AM

There are ads all over the NY subways about this show. They made me curious, so I looked it up and the plot is a lot more dull than the ads made it seem. I was hoping for like a "day in the life of a sadistic serial killer" type of show - that would be great. I'm pretty bored with investigations.

Either way, I dont have showtime, so I cant watch it. Oh yeah.. and I dont watch TV.

guy44 11-04-2006 03:42 PM

I really like the show. The first two episodes are available online free at showtime's website. I've, uh, acquired the rest so far.

Plus, as a total Whedonverse geek, it's great seeing Julie Benz get a good role.

Trust me, the plot is outstanding. It's not your typical investigation-type show. And there are 2 serial killers: the main character who we know is a serial killer, and another serial killer who is "toying" (watchers will get the pun) with him.

What I like most about this show is how they have pushed the viewers into an area where we are rooting for a serial killer and hoping he doesn't get caught.

Agreed. I think my favorite moment in the series to this point was where he was trying to figure out how to reciprocate for the BJ he got (with her in the Lara Croft costume, dayum) and tried to go down on her during Terms of Endearment. I was almost crying, it was so funny.

I also like where they're taking the plot in tomorrow night's episode and shining some light on what he did in the last ep, with the immigration peeps. Personally, I think the Ice Truck Killer is some type of doctor or surgeon. Seems odd that they kept Tucci alive for days without some kind of medical background. Guess we'll find out soon!! :)

Toaster126 11-06-2006 08:03 AM

Yeah, the Terms of Endearment episode was great! He said he was going to pick up something "light" from the movie store, and due to the fact that he's emotionally damaged/stunted and whatnot, he didn't know that Terms of Endearment didn't fit the bill.

If you have Comcast in demand, you can view the first 5 (at least) episodes in the InDemand for Showtime.

Nikilidstrom 11-06-2006 04:06 PM

I also have to give credit to whoever finally taught James Remar (Dexter's adoptive father) how to act. That guy has been the butt of so many movie jokes (Mortal Combat 2, The Quest, Robo Warriors, 2 Fast 2 Furious to name a few) that it is nice to see him finally get to demonstrate some of the acting chops he's honed over his long career (The Warriors in the late 70s was first I saw him in), and show some emotion and not be so wooden.

Devoid 11-13-2006 09:25 PM

Anybody else still watching? I fucking knew Perry wasn't the guy!!!! These next few episodes should be interesting, especially with sis's new boyfriend, the ex-con dad back in the picture, and some of the previews with Dexter at a therapist.

Delirious 11-14-2006 04:35 PM

Unfortunately I read the book so I now know who it is!

I loved the part at the end where Dexter smiles when perry is like "who the fuck are you" Also when he was comforting Rita with "there there" trying to fake some emotion.

Nikilidstrom 11-18-2006 09:39 AM

Its gotta be Deb's new doctor boyfriend. With all his metaphorical talk of pieces and being hole, the things he said about how his mom died, as well as his medical background in prostetics, he's definitely my pick.

JumpinJesus 11-18-2006 09:03 PM

I think the doctor would be too easy. This show is too well written to be that obvious. I think the doctor is a red herring. Of course, they may realize that mostly intelligent people will watch the show and would assume the doctor is a red herring, thus making the red herring a red herring and the doctor really is the ice truck killer.

Yep.

Spoiler: I can't fucking believe it! I tried to be a genius and overthought this. The fucking doctor! Still, it's going to be good when they meet next week, now that we know.

Yeah, last week's episode was incredible, with the meeting. I absolutely love how it was all 'arranged'. Hard to believe it, but this show just keeps getting better and better....

JumpinJesus 12-03-2006 10:07 PM

I've been enjoying this show so much that it's hard to believe there are only 2 episodes left until this season is over. I must say that I'm perplexed as to how the ice truck killer knows so much about Dexter's past.

What do you think Dexter will do when he learns who the ice truck killer is?

intecel 12-04-2006 11:01 PM

How far into the book is this season so far? Can this go on for another season or two, or is this coming to an end?

I think this show is great.

intecel 11-25-2007 11:10 PM

I can't believe nobody's been talking about this season of Dexter!

Am I the only one still watching it? Did anyone see tonight's episode? I've can honestly say I've never cheered on a serial killer (real or fake) until tonight :)

SecretMethod70 11-25-2007 11:21 PM

I've been watching it all the way through...haven't seen tonight's episode yet though. Looking forward to finding out how the season wraps up!

Nikilidstrom 11-26-2007 08:34 PM

I'm definitely still watching it. Its my second favorite show behind House. I still havent seen the new episode, but its waiting for me ONDemand. I'm pretty antsy to see what the catch is with all the previews making it look like Dexter was finally caught by the FBI.

Crack 11-28-2007 06:32 AM

All I can say is that his "sponsor" is one of the hottest women I have ever seen. Period.

EDIT: Holy fucking-jumping-dancing-singing-crap! It's Billy Murray's daughter...

SecretMethod70 11-28-2007 10:48 AM

See, I totally disagree....her body is nice, but her face is just....weird. Mostly the mouth/jaw.

Also, Billy Murray is not Bill Murray. ;)

I think the mouth/jaw thing is fine, it adds a uniqueness that I like.

And damn, I really thought it was Bill Murry from SNL fame. Ah well, I didn't read any further before I posted that. :p

Episode 11 and the finale have been leaked onto Bittorrent:

intecel 12-06-2007 12:36 PM

Thanks for the heads up. I picked up the last 2 on irc last night... Wow...

ironman 12-07-2007 12:23 PM

OMFG!!!!
This is officialy the best series ever!!! I love how Dexter'r psyche was deconstructed along this season and how the characters evolved. I can't wait for the 3rd season. I'll come back when the finale airs so we can talk without spoiling it to everybody else.
I swear to God that if I had the chance to pay for Showtime, I'd do it, but well, I bet they not even know where Guatemala is...

intecel 12-07-2007 05:49 PM

This really isn't a huge spoiler, but I don't want people getting the wrong message, or think they learned something from what I write....

Spoiler: The only problem is that unfortunately Showtime likes to only air shows for 2 seasons, with very few exceptions... Dead Like Me was my favorite show ever on showtime until Dexter, and it was canned after 2...

I think they ended the season/series very well, and as much as I'd like to see another season, I think they ended it nicely.

SecretMethod70 12-07-2007 10:01 PM

Dexter's Nov 18 episode had higher ratings than any other show in Showtime history. Spoiler: I don't think it's going anywhere.

I'll save discussion of the ending for after it airs, but I figured I'd comment on the recent episode where Dexter makes a kill with Doakes in the room. I think that episode, and especially that scene, is one of the most significant the show has had so far. While he may be a serial killer, Dexter is such a fun character that it's easy for the viewer to forget how screwed up he really is. This episode really served to remind us of that and bring us back into the "reality" of Dexter.

First, there's the fact that every time Dexter speaks to Doakes, he sounds totally unhinged. Already, there is more time spent showing Dexter acting a little crazy in this episode than there has been in any past episode I think. Also, there's the matter of Dexter's ritual. Part of his ritual is that he talks to his victims before each kill and reminds them of the terrible things they've done. Not only does it fit into the story, but it also serves a storytelling purpose to remind us how terrible these people are...make it easier for us to accept that the character we like is about to murder them and chop them up into little pieces. Except... he didn't do that this time. All we got, as the audience, is "he's on the run for murder." We never even see the victim conscious, which only emphasizes the brutality of Dexter's killing. And then, of course, there is Doakes' reaction afterwards, which really drives the point home.

I really enjoyed how they did that episode, and I think they did an excellent job of reminding the audience...we're cheering for a brutal serial killer.

Great stuff!

Just got finished watching season 1 and 2... I think I can say this has been my favorite show of all time... im not usually one to get roped into a tv series.

I'm also not one to usually go out and buy the books that a movie or show was based on, but I had to buy the Dexter books.

One of the few instances I think, where the actual show surpassed and exceeded the book, by leaps and bounds. I havnt cracked open the second book yet though.

The one thing about this show.. is the dialog is great, a lot of it pulled directly from the book, and it seems almost everyone on the cast is a good actor/actress. So many TV series suffer from half assed poor acting, and shitty dialog. None of that in Dexter... and I love the music. They found the perfect score to fit the character and set the tone of the show.

Willravel 01-14-2008 09:27 PM

Yeah, you have to watch both seasons back to back with less than 5 hours of sleep. It drives you crazy. You find yourself following Harry's rules. It's good times.

Still, the books are amazing.

Showtime President Robert Greenblatt has confirmed a third season is planned with the season two finale ending with an ad confirming that Dexter will return for a third season in 2008.
They will also be running Dexter on CBS, to use for content because of the writer strike. Not sure how good the shows gonna be edited though.. that will take a lot of the edge out of it.

Yea, the book is great... its leaves you with a lot more of Dexter's inner monologue, which I like. But I couldnt help but feel it was only half the story, after watching the show:)... they obviously fleshed out the fairly short story a hell of a lot to fill a complete season of hour long episodes.

The first two books are. I turned my brother onto the series (and the books) and he wouldn't tell me anything about the third one until I read it. Once I finished it, we immediately agreed that it was a complete disappointment. I just hope Lindsay returns to form in the fourth installment.

Willravel 01-14-2008 10:02 PM

Agreed.

I agree this almost never works well. I know the writers strike has them scrambling but shows like Dexter don't work well with their entire edge removed. It's like watching edited porn.

JumpinJesus 01-19-2008 07:56 AM

I'm fairly certain that Showtime will use this as an opportunity to draw in new subscribers with something like, "See the unedited Dexter by ordering Showtime today..." after each episode.

But yeah, CBS will have to essentially castrate this show before they can air it.

I have to agree on this one... Just finished the third book, and found myself having to struggle through it.

Don't mean to necro an old thread, but has anyone been keeping up with this season so far? Holy shit it's incredible, and last nights episode was amazing.

I watched all of season 1 on Netflix Watch Instantly (with season two also being playable), and went to watch Season 2 to see they'd been yanked! :( Haven't found any explanation anywhere on the intertubes as to why something that was available as recently as last month is no longer. Ah well...I'll probably just have to torrent them now.

Jimmy Smits being added to the cast was absolutely brilliant. His character has added a new dimension to Dexter. He's a different kind of villain, something different from Ice Truck, Doakes, or even that insane brit Lila. Dex never trusted any of them. When he Spoiler: flipped out last week after realizing that it was cow blood on the shirt I feel like the Dexter character really evolved: he felt something.

Does anyone else thing that the series is about Spoiler: Dexter becoming human? It feels like he is less and less a victim of his sickness and more and more is becoming normal. He started out alone and a complete slave to the hunger, but then found sexuality with Rita. He learned to appreciate her and her children. He learned about his biological mother, and her relationship with Harry. He learned how deeply he appreciated Camilla, who was a surrogate mother for him in many ways. And now he actually felt anger towards Miguel Prado... that's a big deal. And now marriage and a child? I wonder if the end of the series will be Dexter departing from the influence of the dark passenger for good. It would be an interesting way to take it.
