Alamo Drafthouse or similar

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you have been to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin or some similar cinema/restaurant.

I have been thinking it would be a cool idea to start in my local medium sized town, but I can't get my head around the logistics of the whole thing. Do you pay for the movie then pay for the meal? Are you required to buy anything?

Tell me about your experiences. Thanks.

They have a few in Houston and Dallas. Pay for movie then pay for meal/drinks during movie. Not sure if you are required to buy anything, but that is the whole reason to go.

Pay for the movie. Sit down. There's a table in front of you instead of another row of seats with menus. A waiter comes around and checks your tickets and asks if you've been there before. If not, they explain how things work. Write your order on a slip of paper and put it in a slot in front of you like a flag. There's regular movie fare (no candy) and real food, 8 inch pizzas, burgers, sandwitches, appetizers, and, best of all, beer and wine. Around half way through the movie the waters come around for last call and then bring you your cheque about 10 minutes after that. You pay in the dark and they collect your money or credit card and return with your recipt and change before the movie ends.

You don't have to buy food just like at a regular theater. The movie is the normal price and I'd say dinner for me and my friend is usually around $30 including 2 or 3 adult bevredges. Last time I had "food" at a normal theater it was about the same cost for 2 Cokes, popcorn and nachos.

They also don't play advertisements while you wait for the previews to start. They usually play cartoons and old movie clips that somehow play into the theme of the upcomming movie.
