Commando

I purchased this DVD recently and was astounded. I remember seeing the movie when I was younger (my Dad had no sense of censorship besides "no titties" when it came to filtering out movies) and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I fucking love this movie. It's perfect!

It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as John Matrix, an ex-marine/army/whatever guy that gets "pulled back into duty" to save his kidnapped daughter (played by Alyssa Milano). I think this, along with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, marked the end of an era of great action movies. Commando is in my top 5 for greatest action movies of all time. It's not politically correct. It's not censored. It's just guns, explosions, and huge muscles by Arnold.

Some memorable moments:

Running the girl's red sports car into a telephone pole going like 80 MPH and jumping out immediately after impact asking if the girl is ok, like nothing happened.

Tearing the phone booth out of the wall with the guy still in it.

The whole ass-end of the movie, where he kills like 100 guys in 15 minutes.

I know at one point Arnold uses something along the lines of a M249 SAW and an M16 assault rifle at the same time, one in each hand. Cinematic greatness.

Some of the lines in the movie are just freakin' great.

"No chance."

"Let off some steam, Bennett."

"Trust me."

Any other fans of Commando out there?

:) I love it!

In my morality class we had the movie poster for it put up. Arnie in camo makeup holding a grenade "Let's Party!"

what's great is that the mall that he swings onto the elevator is the same mall that was in Fast Times At Ridgemont High!

"You remember when I said I'd kill you last, Sully?"
"Yeah!"
"I lied."

I used to recite that line with friends in college at least once a day for about a year. College in small town Iowa rocked!

Coppertop 04-10-2006 02:40 PM

Commando is definitely one of life's guilty pleasures.

Lasereth 04-10-2006 05:41 PM

This movie is one of the funnest college movies ever. There's nothing more awesome than having a few friends around cheering as Arnold wields an M249 SAW in one hand and an M16 in the other as hundreds (literally) of enemies pour forth, missing every single shot while Arnold lands every one with unlimited ammo. Not to mention the GREAT one-liners not seen since True Lies.

Fremen 04-10-2006 05:52 PM

Yeah, yeah. Great ass movie!
It cracked me up when he has to tear the seat out of the car to drive.

Also, I've always had a guilty dream where I have to raid a sporting goods/guns & ammo store like they did. :D

When I was a kid, me and my friend made a list of all the impossible stuff that happened in this movie. It was very long.

Here's some of my favourite quotations (courtesy of IMDB):

Matrix: You're a funny man, Sully, I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last.

Matrix: How much are they paying you, Bennett?
Bennett: They offered me a hundred grand. You want to know something? When I found out I could get my hands on you, I said I'd do it for nothing.

Cindy: What happened to Sully?
Matrix: I let him go.

Gen. Kirby: Leave anything for us?
Matrix: Just bodies.

Diaz: Mellow out man. Your daughter is safe, Colonel. Now whether she stays that way is up to you. My people, they got some business with you. And if you want your kid back, then you gotta co-operate, right?
Matrix: Wrong!
[shoots Diaz between the eyes]

Matrix: [reading about Boy George in a pop magazine] Why don't they just call him Girl George? It would cut down on the confusion.

Hahahaha, this movie is one of the best movies ever made! I especially like the part when he jumps off the landing gear of the plane in the beginning of the movie

Mister Coaster 04-11-2006 01:32 PM

Commando was good for the complete cheese factor, but you know the best Arnold movie was Predator.

Charlatan 04-11-2006 02:54 PM

This is right up there with Predator as a great action film of all time...

Also, the actor who played Sully (David Patrick Kelly) is one of those actors that I always love seeing... he is the Elisha Cook Jr. of his generation (look him up on IMDB). His performances in The Warriors, Twin Peaks, 48Hours, Wild at Heart, etc. are highly memorable.

Redjake 04-12-2006 08:03 AM

hahaha and you can't forget the HYPER CHEESE scene in the beginning when he is feeding the deer with his daughter and smiling

Fremen 04-12-2006 01:08 PM

Hehe, this was on last night about 2:00. Anybody catch it besides myself?
I was wrong earlier, Matrix tore the passenger seat out of Cindy's car, instead of the driver's.

I like David Patrick Kelly, as well. Especially in Dreamscape. Snakeman was pretty scary, even to my 13 yr. old self back then.

Charlatan 04-12-2006 01:17 PM

Fremen... if I had to pick any two people who liked David Patrick Kelly (or knew who he was) you would be on the top of a very short list.

Toaster126 04-12-2006 09:01 PM

Commando is no Predator, but it's close.

Kostya 04-13-2006 03:49 AM

Ah Commando, a solid and oft-played entry in my collection.

I do enjoy the massive homoerotic undertones.

"I eat Green berets for breakfast and right now I'm really hungry!"

"You wanna stick it in me don't you Bennet."

"John... I'll be waiting John."

Chainmail vest + handlebar moustache+leather pants=Butch

Few people know that Bennet was also the badass second in command guy in Mad Max 2.

Actually same thing. I remember seeing this movie with my dad and loving it.

However, even after all these years, I still remember - when they smash into the pole, you can actually see the manequin's head fall off in the crash.

Great movie, though :D

djflish 04-14-2006 01:52 PM

I just watched the DVD (because of this thread!)
Those 'generic communist soldiers' are worse shots than stormtroopers!
It annoyed me a bit that it had been cut since I saw it last.
When he blows the buildings up at the end, you can see can see the dummies being held up on sticks!
Still an awesome movie though

Knight Dragon 04-16-2006 04:48 PM

Of course, the scene with Playmate Ava Cadell as the girl in bed didn't hurt this movie one bit!

...and your point is???

Nikilidstrom 04-17-2006 02:14 PM

How could anyone not know who David Patrick Kelly is?

"Warriors! Come out to playyyy!"

Anywho, Commando, along with every other Arnie, Chuck Norris, and Stalone movie was my Dad's version of keeping me entertained while I was a kid. He'd rent a handful of these flicks, buy us some meatball subs, and sit down and have an action movie marathon at least once a week. So as odd as it may sound, watching Commando is very nostolgic for me.

and everyone knows the best Arnie movie is Hercules In New York :)

And the best Stallone movie is "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!" Or "Over the Top". I never can make up my mind...

Coppertop 04-17-2006 02:32 PM

So obviously the best Norris flick is Sidekicks.

Nah, that honor would go to Top Dog. ;)
