A recent painting (acrylic)

It's for my mother-in-law as a Christmas gift...

It's size is 36 x 40.

I'm making a flat wooden natural stained frame for it.

I'll show you guys the finished product, this is only two days of work, and the photo was taken from eight ft. back so the quality is not good, but here goes:

I can't wait to see when it's finished! I love the vibrant color of the petals, and the background at the bottom is beautifully done! Very nice work.

Mantus 11-28-2005 06:18 PM

Holly smokes. It's beautiful.

As you keep paining try to make the leafs darker as they compete with the flower at the moment. Look at some pictures of leaves and noto how the light reflects across them. Note how the ones in the forgrounds are often bright as they get the most light.

The flower is absolutely gorgeous, I love the red highlights. Infact I like them so much I think you can bring it out a little more for effect and perhaps just a hint more red on the background pettals.

Finally, I think the two red rectangles in the top left and right cornder compete for attention with the red in the flower. I would tone the red down a bit.

Can't wait to see the final work!

Cheers.

Hey Mantus that's all wonderful advice, thank you!

As a matter of fact I had already been thinking all of the same things - no kidding! I agree with the red/orange at the top, but I haven't decided to go with a color, or just a shade. I was thinking of replacing it with a cream color, I just don't want to bring too many colors into the outer sections.

The red, yes definitely. The actual flower had brilliant reds in it. That was an excellent suggestion, and affirms what I was already wondering if I should do.

Lastly, the leaves have no shading yet, and when I'm finished, there will be more depth and perspective. After all there should be a shadow on the leaves from the flower, and it's not there yet.

I need the sun to come out so I can get a better picture of it. That was taken at night, and flashes suck.

pandafaye , thanks. I can’t wait to give it to her. :)

Here's a closer picture with my finger over the flash:

Love it Pinkie. Your mother-in-law will be stunned!

pinkie 11-28-2005 08:18 PM

Wow... Thank you, cello. :icare:

Btw, I just have to comment on your avatar.

It's really nice. :)

la petite moi 11-28-2005 09:54 PM

That's absolutely beautiful. I wish I could do something like that for my MIL (not like she would appreciate it, anyway). I really love the vibrant reds mixed with the purple. It reminds me of a beautiful sunset. :D

frogza 11-29-2005 09:26 AM

Good job! I really like it, and I'm sure she will too. The color and line are perfect.

pinkie 11-30-2005 12:05 AM

Thanks you guys!

A little update as of this morning - again, terrible lighting, taken at night. I need sunlight!

You're welcome Pinkie!

Oh, and you'll need to compliment Mantus on my avatar. Entirely his doing, I just resized it to fit in the little box.

Charlatan 11-30-2005 09:04 AM

I realiszed that after I found his thread. He's amazing.

Charlatan ~ Thank you. I do want to get around to painting some of your awesome phone-photos. :)

I finally just decided to throw down the cash, and get started again. :D

rofgilead 11-30-2005 05:27 PM

I like it a lot! Nice textures behind the flower, they look fun!

snowy 11-30-2005 07:29 PM

Wow, pinkie! How beautiful! I love how the flower seems to jump out from the leaves and the picture. It's a gorgeous painting; great work!

pinkie 11-30-2005 08:00 PM

Nearing completion now, today was a cloudy day, so you're still not getting a true color picture. Hopefully I'll have a good sunny day and new batteries soon! ;)

There's a glare and the color isn't right in the picture, but oh, well. :)

I'll take the last picture when it's framed.

Charlatan 12-05-2005 09:43 AM

Pinkie... It's been fun watching the painting progress. I love the choices you made.

Excellent!

pinkie 12-05-2005 09:45 AM

Thank you, babykins. :)

p.s. I saw... ;)

pinkie 12-05-2005 09:48 AM

I just worked on it some more after looking at the picture... :D

Grasshopper Green 12-08-2005 01:03 PM

Very, very nice pinkie. It's absolutely beautiful. I hope your MIL loves and appreciates it!

pinkie 12-08-2005 08:40 PM

Thanks very much, Medusa99. :)

I hope she does too!

Naked Communist 12-08-2005 10:35 PM

That's really beautiful, Pinkie. The colors in the flower are so vibrant, but I have to say I really like the way you did the leaves. The greens complement the petals. I love it - your MIL should too. :)

Fly 12-09-2005 06:11 AM

can't wait to see it in the frame.

Thank you! I can't tell you how annoying it is to worry about it appealing to her! The nice compliments really help.

Thanks again to everyone for the feedback

Slippery Slope 12-14-2005 06:52 PM

I cannot tell you how nervous I am about giving it to her!

rlynnm 12-24-2005 10:38 AM

That's a lovely gift. There's got to be a lot of love in there.

cj2112 12-24-2005 10:40 AM

ok, i'm not much into paintings, especially ones of flowers, however that is beautiful, so much so, that even not being very into paintings or paintings of flowers, I would be absolutely thrilled to receive that as a gift and would proudly display it in my living room. Awesome job, it's outstandingly beautiful, and you have a great talent.

pinkie 12-24-2005 10:45 PM

Man you guys are so sweet, thank you!

Well, she loved it, she cried... I was so happy to give it to her. My family all helped pay for the framimg job so it was from all of us. It turned out wonderful.

Thanks so much to everyone for the encouragement and support!

This was my first flower. :)

perfect choice on the frame, the color of the frame really helps the frame serve it's main purpose, which is to draw your eye to the artwork

kramus 12-27-2005 04:38 PM

Sweet combination of forms and textures, colours and movement. A wonderful and thoughtful work that will neither fade into the wall after a while, nor will it overwhelm the room it finally rests in. Totally excellent in every respect Pinkie. Thanks for sharing the process.

pinkie 01-23-2006 12:50 PM

Thanks again to all for the encouragement.

I'm going to be starting a new series soon that will be at a show in Portland, OR. in June. I'll keep the process updated.
