Esprit de corps illustration

ege carpets (the place where I work now) wanted to make a folder with their company values. They needed some sort of illustration on the front page with a symbol of esprit de corps and since I am the only one around here who can draw they asked me to make it.

After much brainstorming and sketching I came up with this:

http://www.danielsan.dk/upload/esprit.jpg

I showed it to one of the secretaries and she said „ooohhhhhh! Those are some sweet little athletes!”. Obviously they're not athletes as ege has nothing to do with sports haha. They two characters are suppose to be ordinary people representing the various departments of ege (hence the different colors). And they're not only lifting ege's flag, no they're making an efford to hold it as high as possible – together. I thought that was a pretty good symbol of esprit de corps myself. The rings in the back are ripples in the water to symbolize the spreading effect of this idea/attitude.

Is it really that hard to see? :p

Uncle Pony 10-12-2005 12:29 AM

I saw it as two people holding the company logo (emblazoned on a flag) on a swirly background. It's safe to say that I didn't get it at all. :)

Nancy 10-12-2005 12:34 AM

^^ Damn. What if NONE of the ege employers get it?!

They probably will. Remember, I have absolutely no idea what your company does. They do.

Nancy 10-12-2005 12:39 AM

^^ Let's hope so ;)

Seems to me that with their other arms up in the air it's like they are both celebrating something together. Cool.

Is there a reason/symbol why the red guy's head is bigger than the yellow guy's? Or does it just make the drawing look better

Bill O'Rights 10-12-2005 09:53 AM

Hmmm...
OK, I got the part about the employees holding the company's flag up together, as high as they could. I didn't pick up on the symbolism behind the different colors equating different departments, within the organization, but I can see it now. (good touch, by the way) The part about the rings in the background being ripples in the water, symbolizing the spreading effect of an idea...right over my head and out of door. Not saying it's a bad idea...just that it was completely lost on me.
Overall, though, I'd say that it's A+ work.

It's a cute pic, but I totally missed out on the ripple symbolism. I just thought it looked nice. Either way, I think it works.

Your "a" and "e" are too close together.

JUST KIDDING!

I like it. I saw swirls, not water rings, but other than that, I got it.

It makes the drawing look better and it adds to the whole "representing different departments" concept :)

cyrnel 10-27-2005 01:10 AM

I like it!

Cripes, I wouldn't call that "drawing". I draw, you illustrate.

She's probably picking up some Olympic torch connotation.

Screw 'er, sez this pirate! Go with it!

Nancy 10-27-2005 01:15 AM

^^ P-pirates? :hmm:

cyrnel 10-27-2005 01:23 AM

p-feeling p-piratey.

A local store I drive by several times daily still has "national talk like a pirate day" flags hanging & a pirate on the roof. They probably leave their Christmas tree up through August. p-procrastinators. p-can't p-get p-it p-out p-of p-my p-head.

I've seen many team-building binders, handouts, materiel from inside and out of large companies. Yours is great. The pirate likes it. I like it.

Nancy 10-27-2005 02:27 AM

^^ hahahah arrrr! Awesome! :D

I think the athletes comment must've come from the fact that most sporting logos have people drawn like that in them. :)

It's simple, eye-catching colour scheme, but the different light directions with the gradients make it a little distracting.

can we see a flat colour version? :)

I'm an illustrator and I think this is quite effective and well done. It's got balance, design & symbolism. All the best logos are the most simple.

Tak for sharing!! Skol!

Very nice Nancy. Easy symbolism, basic colours, simple shapes...

but, in order to properly critique this, I'd need to know what your company does, the audience this is for, and what media this will be presented in.

Luckily, neither of us need to critique this, right? ;)

It's not a logo, it's an illustration :)

- now where did you pick up in those Dansish words? :p

I know that you cannot reproduce the "Å" letter on your keyboard which is a part of "skål" - however in Denmark double a equals Å so next time just write "Skaal!" ;)

Hehe I've said that already! The company is called "ege carpets" – guess what we make ;) The media is a print – the front illustration of a folder that is to be distributed internally for all ege's workers and managers only. Its content is our company values – how to improve our mutual respect for one another, co-operation etc. That's why the characters are holding ege's flag – as a symbol of their aim at improving our internal values.

Nancy 11-02-2005 12:43 AM

^^Bah I forgot to thank you for your kind words guys. Zank you, zank you! :D

Distracting you say? Take a look at how it looks in flat color then:
