3D studio max help... maps and textures
Ok.. so I've looked everywhere else. looked up maps and textures in the help file. But I can't seem to find out why my texture that I've edited can't be applied to my object.. and it's really starting to annoy me..
Basically I've taken the yellow brick jpeg and darkened it in photoshop in an effort to get rid of the ugly dark wrap squares it seems to have.. ok I save it as a jpg.. all good, well so I think until this morning I try and place it on my object and nothing happens.. it just looks grey. So I think maybe it's not the texture... so I place the old texture on it (Bricks_Yellow) and wallah.. that works fine.. so now I'm frustrated. Can someone out there help me. Thanks :) |
what type of material are you applying to the object?
which channel is the matteial applied to? 3D studio max is very prissy on the settings applied to an object based on the material type that is applied ( including the physics of the object ) |
bump map.. I think it's called.. all Channels as far as I know.. basically I've just gone to 'get material' selected bitmap and chosen the file. The file appears under bump and diffuse I think. I'm trying to apply a jpgs, as the other maps use jpgs as their bases.. thanks

This was me not making any sense, and giving bad information...

the original bump and diffuse maps are jpegs and they have no problem.. so I'm figuring it's something to do with the pic I am using.. or the way I am saving it.
Any Ideas? Should I be saving it on maximum resolution? |

Switch your file format to something non-compressed, like bitmaps or tifs, you will save yourself a headache in the long run, and your scenes will look better. Even at maximum resolution a jpeg is still a lossy format. Is there any way you could post your images so we could take a look at them? |
It's nothing much really.. just a square based pyramid. O_o If you really want a pic of it I'll put one up.. but yeah.. think I'll take on your advice about the converting the jpeg to gray scale for the bump map tho :D that's IF the texture ever works O_o
I'm sure it has something to do with the way I've saved my pic in photoshop... I'll keep messing around with it and I'll take any hints thrown my way :D |
hit M on the key board that will pull up the texture window, select the object you want to add the texture too and find the button that will send it to it, you may want to go to barns and noble and grab a book on 3dsmax, version 4 is similar to version 6 and since you are just begining grab teh V4 book it will save you some money verses teh V6 book
