My latest take on the crucifixion

This is about a three hour effort (I'm VERY slow).

The shading could be a little smoother, although it is nicer in person that it appears on screen. It would have been a little more contrasty if I would have used something more versatile than a Bic mechanical pencil, but overall I'm happy with it

I don't know how to post pictures, so here's the link: www.geocities.com/the_crim_rhwv/newcrucifix.html

the the huge faded head and the body underneath it look a little weird, cause it looks like bobble head jesus sort of, but in all good effort man!

That rocks! I'm not really into religious themed art but that is a very cool look.

Thanks for all the comments.

gallopingwanker: I'd be interested to know what you think would improve the work. I probably won't go back into this piece, since I'm mainly doing add/erase charcoal and conte pieces on larger scale right now (I'll be doing something else by next week), but it'd be nice to know what would improve the image if I decide to make a larger format version.

mb99usa: I'm not really that big on religious art either, but for some reason I can't get away from doing crucifixions. I think it just has a very powerful emotional field around it that I enjoy. Mostly I do tattoo style drawings, car renderings or cigarette/cigar themed work. The religious themes tend to be drawn from the old tattoo style.

It was hard to tell which way the face on the top was facing. Then the hand can in no way be attatched to the body how you have it drawn. Before I read your last post though, I thought it was supposed ot be that way. Like Jesus was in pieces or something. i thought the eye was looking towards the cross and the body facing forward and the hand not connected to the body. I like it that way though. It makes the viewer think.

little limey: Yeah, the parts are in no way connected. I was just going to do the cross alone, but then I noticed it was off center, so I drew the arm to fill some space, kinda like the images were superimposed. Then the head was drawn to balance the arm, and then the body was drawn, because there was a picture of a kickboxer on my coffee table, and I stole his physique. The fourth corner's blank because I got bored.

But yeah, they aren't of the same pose. They're supposed to be details, or various shots, composed photoshop style into one image, faded into the image of the surreal cross. Just to add visual interest, and to visually minimize the off center cross.

There is no real symbollism of the position of the body, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback.

P.S. The head is facing forwards. It's just supposed to be close-up of the face during the whole crucifixion/dying period, complete with blood, anguished look, and tears.

way to dismember jesus. i think that it is important to think out why you are drawing certain things.. it looks really confusing, because you are using body parts that are very close to each other and throwing them all about. it comes across as body parts. the head going into the neck looks really odd. like what wanker is saying, the head is so much bigger.. and it is incomplete.

analinguist: I'm not sure exactly what you're suggesting. The head was supposed to be incomplete, I guess. I was going for kind of a faded look, as if it was a composite photo, with soft edges on the different elements.

Thanks for your feedback. Any suggestions on what could improve the composition?

i understand you intentions with the soft fade, but there really isn't much of a soft fade if you look at it. the edges remain pretty hard and come to an abrupt stop. maybe if you faded those edges, and possibly even had a slight grey between the head and the body, it would seem to blend more. right now it just seems like they are sliced instead of blended.

Do you think maybe a midtone between all the elements, maybe charcoal or an ink wash, would help?

I originally intended to do that, but was afraid that it would look more like the head and body were one piece, ironically.

I may do a copy of this and add the tone to see if that helps separate the elements.

Thanks for the suggestions.

that is what i was kinda thinking. if you don't have the outlines, they may just look like they are blurring together.. give it a shot maybe.

Thanks man! I've just finished part of a BIG (2'x6 or 8') self-portrait. It's kinda in the "lowbrow" style, but I don't have the actual "me" part yet, just a large winged heart at the bottom. It's full-color, and I'll be sure to post it, once I get back home and can take a picture of it (obviously waaaayyy too big to scan).

very nice. I like the 'decay' of the cross towards the bottom (don't think decay is really the word I'm looking for, but it kinda describes it).

I agree about the head kind of throwing things off with the body. Possibly have the head be at a different angle? maybe slightly smaller so theres more distance between it and the body?
