Aliased? Hints and tips needed.

I was wondering if some helpful soul might be able to explain to me the reason for this graphics problem I have... First of all, I use Paint Shop Pro 7. Whenever I select a portion of an image, paste is as a new image, and save, the outcome always "looks" bordered".

Like, if I put it on a page with a black background, the picture, even if its contents were dark, looks like it has a very thin light border. Just looks unnatural. I asked a friend of mine via email and they said it looks aliased. What does this mean exactly and how can I prevent this? If anyone can give me step by step instructions, even better, but any help would be appreciated.

turn anti-aliasing off on the selection tool...

aliasing is how the program cleans up jagged corners and such, usually used in 3d rendering programs, but also in graphics programs to make things look less abrupt and more natural.

marsfyre's got it, just do that and it should be fine.

Thanks, that worked! :)
