Fly's Bike Revisited
For those who are new to the game, this is Fly's bike. Well, not his exactly, but I drew it in Illustrator about a year and a half ago for him:
It would get a lot of attention at art fests, mostly from biker types, but I think the pinkish color and maybe the background was a turn-off, so I decided to make a few changes: Hardest part was finding backgrounds that went off to the left! One of these is reversed, but that can't always be done.

3rd one is off a bit. not a great shot.
2nd one is the worst because it looks like a floating bike. 1st is awesome except that you used a filter when it wasn't needed. or it looks like you did and that to me, makes the picture look low rez and unfinished. bring it back to full rez without anything to it, and then you'll have something!

If i only used the original photos, then it'd look like a bike drawing stuck on a photo; my attempts were to blend it all like one piece. If I had the time, it'd actually be best to draw the backgrounds in Illustrator like I did the bike. Maybe flattening the bottoms of the tires just a little bit might make it seem less like it's in the air? They do print better than they appear, looking more blended but it's that appearance of it not being set down that I have to work on. |

I remember when you posted when some of it was done, but I never saw the final piece. Bravo!!!!
How big was the file when you were done?

Sorry I meant the file size. Some vector projects I have worked on in the past became huge as I finished them.

I looked into some older threads to see how you made the bikes. Forgive my ignorance but it seems that a real picture was blown up to a huge proportion to make even pixels seem enormous and then it was traced onto a new canvas. Is it more complicated than that? There are filters out there that do the same thing. Isn't copying a blown up pixel the equivalent to copying a huge 6 inch circle on the screen for a really long time? I imagine if you copy enough 6 inch pixels long enough when you finally zoom it out will resemble something. All it would take is the ability to replicate overblown pixels for a hundred hours.
Or am I not seeing how this works?? |

Well, Lasareth, you oversimplified it a bit. Yes, the bike is drawn (in Illustrator) by 'blowing up pixels' to about 6400%, but it's not exact-it's my interpretation. Sort of like making a quilt-taking sections at a time (and I really never knew what section I was doing due to the largeness), then refining them, changing what needed to be changed(such as reflections) and creating backdrops.
Any time you see 'realistic' drawings posted in sites proclaiming "drawn with Illustrator", that's how it's done. Fly: Ok, that's just spooky...I had no idea he'd changed the bike to blue! Maybe I should put a similar graphic on it now! |
