Winter screws with my hair

Somebody help before I chop all of my hair off.

The air is so dry in the winter, it makes my hair really frizzy and full of static. What can I do to fix it, beyond always wearing a ponytail?

I tend to use shampoo and conditioner combined. Usually Panteen. I'm not a big fan of hair products, but it seems like I must need something. I've got a few sleek/frizz control serums, but I don't use them very often.

What do you ladies do to prevent that "I just stuck my finger in the electrical socket" look?

You can actually use a small amount of body/hand lotion to help keep frizz down. Just rub a little bit over the top layer of your hair. Don't use too much or it'll get oily. I find it to be a pretty easy solution, hope it helps you out.

Absolutely. Works like a charm. Sometimes you can find the small miniature cans that you can carry around in your bag for "emergencies". Static Guard - couldn't live without it.

When I had long hair, all winter I looked like I was touching one of those tesla coils all the time. My hair just kind of .... floated along with me. One thing I found that worked was brushing my hair while I was electrically grounded - like touching metal barefoot. I also found that blow-drying it till it was still just a tiny bit damp and then putting some anti-frizz stuff or leave-in conditioner on it helped, too.

USE A CONDITIONER!!!

Seriously! If you use a good conditioner, you'll have less need for hair products--even if you use a 2-in-1 shampoo. Use one appropriate for your hair type. If you have thick, coarse wavy/curly hair like mine, I use what others would consider a deep conditioner on a regular basis along with a little bit of leave-in conditioner (I like a combination of Aussie 3-Minute Miracle and Paul Mitchell The Conditioner).

Secondly, try a good moisturizing shampoo--ie Aussie Moist. That will also help with the problem.

A little dab of anti-frizz serum on still-wet hair and using a brush treated with Static-Guard...you should be good to go. Another good solution for the static is to rub a dryer sheet over your head. Silly-sounding, but true. Oh, and if you blow-dry your hair, make sure the nozzle is always pointed down with the direction of your hair.

Specifically, you want to look for products with silicone in them--on hair product labels it's referred to as dimethicone. Good luck!

Controversy!

I've seen posts around MUA that say 'cones (as they affectionately call them) seal moisture out of your hair, causing more dryness.

could be ... but I still love my Frizz-Eaze

Well, I use the shampoo/conditioner stuff. I don't like full on conditioner or leave in stuff. Makes my hair feel so weighed down. Maybe I'm just not rinsing it all out?

Gah. Good tips so far though, thanks ladies

Have you tried a leave-in like Infusium 23? That's a very light liquid leave-in that won't weigh hair down.

redken glass. just put that in your hair after youve straightened it or let it dry. i use it after i straighten my hair with a ceramic hot iron (originally super curly/frizzy hair). it'll make your hair smooth and shiny. if it works on my giant 'fro, it'll work for you.

Ditto! Frizz-Ease all the way...it's a great range.

that and a good conditioner...also a leave-in conditioner does wonders.

I have also tried a great conditioner from Kerastase (Soin Elasto-Curl ...if your hair is curly, but they have products for straight hair)

and a conditioning leave-in cream from clinique (defined curls curl enhancer, heir whole range is good)

expensive stuff, but a little goes a long way...

also, it's your hair, it's definitely DEFINITELY worth it.

If you get only one product for your hair, it will already make a difference.

I can relate! winter is mak9ing my hair less "curly" and more "crappy." usually i swear by a really think gel to keep frizz down (slick works by paul mitchel or Humectant Hair Gloss (http://www.iowabeauty.com/html/altobella_claypac.html scroll down). but i'm not sure should be given advise considering the way my hair looks right now.

I've got wavy hair too. Not curly, not straight. Grrr. Stupid hair.

I'm growing it out in hopes that when it gets longer I can use curl enhancing stuff. When I use it now my hair just sticks up all over the place. And not in a cute way

Try the Frizz Ease styling gel! It dries weightless.

I got real straight hair and winter makes it looks fuzzy. I have several methods to cope with the dryness.
1. I rarely blow dry my hair. Letting it air dry doesn't dry it out so much. When I do use a hair dryer I don't dry it till it feels dry. Just a little dampness left in and then air dryed seems to help keep the fuzzies at bay.
2. I use a boar bristle brush. They're a bit more expensive but last much longer, aren't hard on the hair and pull much, and don't build up static like nylon brushes do. You can get them in varying degrees of stiffness. I've use them on long and short hair both and they work great.
3. I use Infusium leave in conditioner in a spray bottle. I only use as much and when I need it. It works good as a detangler for my daughter's long hair since she wakes up with rats nests more often than not.

My hair is naturally curly, if I don't put gel or mousse in it while its wet...POOF! Static and tangles, it makes ne not a very happy camper. So thats what I'll do if I want to wear it curly, but lately I have been straightening it then smoothing styling wax over it, it works pretty well. I also just started using Garnier Nutrisse shampoo and conditioner, so far, its keeping static down to a minimum.

I'm in a 'dutch braid' phase (think two french braids, one on either side of your head).

I do it in the morning after i've showered, wear it like that all day (i normally stick a fake flower or something in it for fun), then don't take it out that night, wear it to sleep, by morning #2, take it out and you'll have 'kinky' hair... not straight, not curly... I find it easier to work with because it has life but isn't out of control.

You can use a few bobby pins to hold it into place, or pull it half up... by the end of the day if it starts going flat, put it all into a pony tail and the texture might make it less like a 'mane' and more like that "just woke up out of bed and i don't care about my hair but doesn't it look great anyway" kind of way.

Try it at least for one day. Spritz a little bit of hair spray, or use some sort of calming lotion on the top few pieces that might get static charged up throughout the day and you'll be good to go.

I sorta do that every now and again, fallenangel. Right now my hair is just shoulder length, but it has layers... trying to grow out some long bang type things. Makes it hard to braid.

Oh, and I can't french braid. I really should have to revoke my girl membership

No shame in not being able to french braid, Averett, lol.
I can't do it either. Of course, this is the first time since I was six that I've had long hair, so I just never bothered to learn.
