HOH Ladies
Heallo,
I am Alicia, 18, from Stanford, CA. II am HOH (Hard-Of-Hearing), due to chemo-therapy I had five years ago. My hearing los is mild, but still I wear pair of ITE (Full Shell) hearing aids. I already seen few HOH ladies here, but I am interested how many of us there are her. If there are enough, maybe we can make separate forum for us? Alicia |
Hi there! I'm sure there are a few more besides you and I, but no where near enough to make a seperate forum. Still feel free to post your thoughts and ideas in this forum - it's here for ALL ladies, and I'm sure you'll still get discussion. Welcome!

My first HA was oticon BTE (analog, don't remember model), than I got pair of digital Oticon BTE's (Oticon Ergo) and finally, last year pair of "full shell" ITE (Bernafone SmilePlus) - those you can see in the picture in my profile. What type do you wear? Alicia |
Well, the nerves in your ear are much more sensitive at higher frequencies, and that's part of the reason for the higher damage levels. I lost my hearing from spinal meningitis as a baby 20 years ago, and have been wearing a BTE in my right ear (completely deaf in my left) since then. The ITE aren't powerful enough for me moderate-severe loss, but I'm loving my digital Phonak.

I'm not HOH, but I do have an auditory problem.
It's called Central Auditory Processing Deficit. I've been having problems with it for about three years now, but only in the last year and a half has it become problematic. It's normally found in younger people, so i'm a bit of a late bloomer (and i didn't actually notice until later like i said). If you put your hands over your ears and try talking, you'll notice it sounds muffled and you have trouble distinguishing some words. I have that when there's more than one noise in the same range occuring around me. Really fuzzy explanation and not very in deapth but i don't want to bore anyone with the details. PM me if you're really interested, or just google CAPD. No cure, and a hearing aid won't help. Only this special training (think physiotherapy for your auditory nerves) is HELLA expensive, not covered under medical, and will only provide a bit of ease when dealing with this. |
