Post your favorite female musicians!

Tonight I feel like paying tribute to all the women of rock, rap, jazz, pop, etc. I know this could belong in the Music or Entertainment Forum, but these strong women give us a voice and impart knowledge or power unto all us females...so I found it fitting to post this in the Ladie's Lounge.

Some of my personal favorites:

Tori Amos

Bjork

SiN 05-08-2003 02:19 AM

honestly find many female musicians annoying
- but that is strictly my opinion, i've still got all the respect for female musicians and those who like them, is just not for me usually..

There are a few i like..

Joan Osbourne
Shirley Manson
Miss Kittin

Two incredibly talented women!!! BTW, that pic of Madonna is super sexy!

Peutetre 05-10-2003 08:11 PM

It's nice to see some Ani fans.. I really love her music.
I also like Indigo Girls.. Janice Joplin.. and Kate Ryan..

blueskies 05-11-2003 08:01 AM

I'm glad there are more female musicians today! They are so over looked for their talent and only looked at for their sex appeal.
My list includes:
MEG LEE CHIN!!!
Madonna
Hole
Janis Joplin
Tori Amos is a goddess
Annie Lennox
Dido
Stevie Nicks
Sarah Mclachlan
Selena (I live in Texas, hehe)
Toby from Snake River Conspiracy (she is my woman! w00h00)

I listen to more male musicians though ... I like harder, heavier music and more male musicians are able to give me what I like to hear. Out of the women I listed: Toby and Meg are the only ones that have that edge I like. They do it very well. :)

Double D 05-11-2003 09:57 AM

Chrissie Hynde, pre-1985. Her vibrato still knocks me out
Sheryl Crow- Fun, driving in the car-type tunes
Tori Amos- an artist in _every_ sense of the word
Stevie Nicks - her early stuff is unparallelled (sp)
Ann & Nancy Wilson- one word: Barracuda
Aretha Franklin- A Queen among queens
Patsy Kline- another door opened in my life when I first heard her
Bonnie Raitt- A musican's musican
Gwen Stefani - It's fun to watch her gain confidence & grow artistically

Double D 05-11-2003 10:09 AM

I forgot some ladies from my motherland -Canada

Joni Mitchell- truly gifted songwriter
Alanis- can come up with a nice turn of a phrase- swears well too!
Avril - for not being Britney

Many of the above...

Aimee Allen, her voice makes me ache, I am actually aroused by this woman's voice. It's kinda freaky.

The girl from Evanescence because I'm too lazy to go look up her name.

I know a lot of people would gripe over it, but the Dixie Chicks, they've done stupid stuff, but so have the rest of us, and they have some very woman empowering music.

Reba McEntire - I grew up listening to country and she is absolutely the best. Not everyone's tastes, but she is the female singer I would pass up --any-- other concert to go see, and I'd take my mommy with me. I haven't listened to her in years, and I've never seen the tv show she's got, but I would grab my mom and be front row for a Reba concert.

figgles 05-26-2003 07:57 PM

Michael Jackson.
Gotta admit it answers a lot of questions!!

Concertina 05-30-2003 04:20 PM

Tori....of course....duh.....

Sarah Brightman.....no one does soprano like that woman does it...

Ani....again, of course....I'm not diggin her new album so much, but everything else is a-okay by me....

Sarah Mclachlan - Fumbling towards ectasy is perhaps the single most perfect album ever created....just push repeat....

Stevie Nicks - rapid fire chills up and down my spine...what a voice that woman has....

Heart - I love heart....best 70/80's band ever....

Enya...not sure if she falls in this category, but the woman has so much integrity....and so much talent!!

And as if we could forget....

Cher!!!!

Annie Lennox
Skye Edwards
Fiona Apple
Sheryl Crow
Tatu (yeah, cheesey and controversial buit I love the music - really ;) )

StoneyBaby 07-01-2003 09:11 PM

I'd have to second (third, fourth, nth) all that has been mentioned and add...NORAH JONES, LISA LOEB, SARAH BRIGHTMAN, and JEWEL (although "Intuition" makes me wanna curl up into a fetal position and ask God why).

:hmm:

cheerios 07-01-2003 09:19 PM

StoneyBaby: is she still putting stuff out? (Jewel that is). I was under the imression she'd faded off into obscurity.

been on an Ani Difranco kick lately. "Both hands" and "God's country" are both awesome. :)

Yeah, she put out a Brittney/Christina-esque video with her new single with the aforementioned title (Intuition). I'm all for musicians revolutionizing their usual style, but she's at least 5 years too late, and what ever happened to COMING ORIGINAL (to borrow from a beloved band of mine)?! I'm guessing this is a last ditch attempt to prevent fading into oblivion...but it's a horrible one, at best.

*cries* Why, God, why...

anti fishstick 07-01-2003 10:41 PM

I like so many types of music and so many musicians. Kind of like the Hottest Man poll. To many to pick from, but here's a few of my favs: Madonna, Jewel, Lil Kim, Gwen Stephani, which I noticed have already been mentioned but I also like Faith Hill, Shania, Martina McBride, Reba, Mariah Carey, & I'm actually enjoying Kelly Clarksons music (corny Im sure)! LOL

shannon 07-20-2003 07:32 PM

wow, i'm sooo happy to see so many. especially cibo mattto. i haven't listened to anything even slightly new, but sugar water has to be an all time favorite.
i love alanis sooo much. she is the coolest, most down to earth woman ever. and as much as avril sometimes seems to me like a bratty teen i have this feeling she will follow and become something like alanis with time. singing losing grip at the top of your lungs while driving is fun as hell.
tuesday night music club is the best cd to sing with, by sheryl crow for those of you not hip with the very current music.
a couple good canadians include esthero and res. it's hard to come across their cds in smaller cities here so i don't know how anyone would fend there.
as much as shania twain can be gross with her leather/robot insanity videos i love some of her stuff, especially older stuff for the country whore in me. and alison krauss has an amazing voice.
i'm gonna have to get into ani because i hear everyone sing her praises at school and then hear by you fine people.
what a great topic, thanks.

beckybb 07-22-2003 07:52 AM

Good thread ....
Sara McGlaughlin (sp?)
Ani DiFranco
Sheryl Crowe (is it just me, or is there something really sexy about her upper lip?)
Indigo Girls
Aimee Mann
Diane Krahl
Gwen Stafani
Patsy Cline
Joan Jett (the punk Joan Jett, not the pop Joan Jett)

I love Morcheeba, lurkette! Especially their first two albums. Awesome choice. :)

Concertina 07-23-2003 05:01 PM

Okay....totally off topic, but i gotta go there.....

Plummie.....my husband is a tf'er too, and he introduced me. When I first saw your name, I thought, Kick Ass! Plumeria! Which is like my favorite fucking flower in the universe.

He always thought it was Plum-ie...as in, ripe like a plum. Flattering, but your new pic and sig has me thinking I'm right.

Am I right?!?!?! And could you translate your sig for me. I know about that much *holds fingers barely apart* hawaiian. I can do the vocal lilt, and pronounce things, but that's about it. :)

m

Plummie 07-23-2003 10:03 PM

Hey Concertina, well although I too love the Plumeria (I even have a live one from Hawaii), my name is pronounced the way your husband suggested. Like a sugarplum. Plummie. :)

My sig translates: Together we stand, divided we fall. In Hawaiian of course.

I thought it was a fitting sig for our TFP community.
