infections

Urine infections.. or blatter infections hurt like a bitch... and I know that if you chug cranberry juice it will at least ease up the pain and whatnot.. but it doesn't always help... I also have, well at least had some pills from my doctor for it... my primary.. not the GYNO ...
This seems to happen after I have sex... is that normal... or does that happen to anyone else? And if so.. is it all right?

isis 04-25-2004 06:03 PM

Make sure you go to the washroom after sex. It helps clean out your urethra and keeps bacteria that cause bladder infections out. Thats my main piece of advice. And drink lots of water.

qtpye4u84 04-25-2004 06:13 PM

You can get cranberry pills. When having sex the penis hits up against the cervix and it pushes up wards on to the f. tubes so that makes it a little more painfull.

Frenchie 04-25-2004 06:55 PM

But is it a bad thing that it is happening?

thanks-

StormBerlin 04-25-2004 09:06 PM

Always Always Always pee after you have sex, even if you don't feel like you have to.
I used to get bladder infections all the time and I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy. And yes, I always got them right after sex, It was the worst.
Make sure it doesn't go untreated because it will turn into a kidney infection.
Stay away from Soda or Beer (anything that's carbonated) and no orange juice/lemonade. The citrus hurts too. Drink lots of water.

This will sound strange, but when you have to pee when you have a bladder infection, take a glass of warm water in with you and pour it over your crotch while you are peeing. It will help tonz. Good luck :)

Aside from the pain and annoyance, it's not necessarily a bad thing. The only issue is that you're more likely to get another one after you've had your first one, so follow the ladies' advice: pee before and after sex, get some drugs from the doctor if it doesn't go away with cranberry juice, and make sure that sucker is knocked out and doesn't get to your kidneys.

Best of luck - they're a bitch!

raeanna74 04-26-2004 06:43 AM

Great advice above here. Also whether you have an infection or not it's best to make sure you pee it all out when you go. After you've gone wait a sec and give one last push. You'll usually get a little bit more dribble and completely emptying your bladder can help prevent or keep it from getting worse as quickly.

Also empty your bladder before you have sex. And as mentioned above - go after sex too.

I use a Peri-bottle the kind that they give you after childbirth at the hospital. You can find them from a drug store. You can direct the spray and it doesn't dribble all over. The warm water helps keep you clean and soothes.

There is such a thing as "honeymoon" UTI. It usually results from more rough sex. If you are having rough or deep sex you could change your position so that the penetration isn't as deep. Sometimes you can get a little brusing around your urinary tract from deep/rough sex and that encourages infections.

I had my first infection when I got Bacterial Vaginosis. The Dr said that it was partly because there was already bacteria present in my vagina and it just got passed on to my urethra. You could get that avenue checked out. Sometimes you won't even have symptoms of BV and sometimes it won't even show up on a PAP if it is very mild. It can get worse and keep contributing to UTI's. BV can be started just by getting bacteria from your anus up on your vagina. I can also be contributed to by your partner if he doesn't clean himself when you have sex.

Cranberry juice helps by changing the pH of your Urinary system such that the bacteria can't live/thrive. Make sure you check what kind of juice you are getting. Most brands say 27% juice or something of the sort but if it doesn't specifically say that it's 27% cranberry juice than that percentage includes other juices. Northland is one brand (that my Dr recommended) that I know of that I can trust to use more cranberry juice in their juices. Don't get the Cranberry coctail as it won't have as much cranberry in it either. Read the labels carefully. There are only a few bottles on the shelf that actually have 20-27% cranberry juice in them. I don't think any of them carry MORE than 27%.

I hope this helps. Do make sure you go see a Dr if you can't get rid of it fairly quickly or if it seems to keep coming back as soon as you stop "treating" it. That could mean that you aren't really getting rid of it but just alleviating the symptoms. As was mentioned above it can cause much more serious problems if it is allowed to go on too long. Good luck. I know these are a pain.

Frenchie 04-26-2004 08:09 AM

Should I go and see my GYNO or my primary? Or should I go and see a urologist?

And thanks a lot!!!...

lurkette 04-26-2004 08:24 AM

Any general practiitioner can diagnose and treat a UTI. You'll pee in a cup and they'll culture the urine to see if there are bacteria present, and if there are they'll give you some antibiotics - probably sulfa drugs - and maybe some UT anesthetic pills to keep you comfy while the sulfa drugs kick in (these are the pills that turn your pee bright orange - you can get them OTC so you may already have gotten some). No need to see a gyno or urologist unless you're getting them frequently.

fallenangel 04-26-2004 09:56 AM

No, it's not a terribly bad thing to get... However, before you get medicine check if you're allergic first or you'll have a nasty reaction like i did, (ended up in hospital, -Nancy, this is what i was talking about)... scary shit...

Drink lots of Cranberry juice, Orange juice and Vit. C's... and Water!

If you get a UTI and don't get it under control quick enough, you can get a uterine infection. If that uterine infection doesn't get taken care of, it can affect your ability to have children. So if this is something that's worrying you a lot, you should really go to a doctor.

Really? I wouldn't have thought that a urinary infection could travel to the uterus. I knew if you didn't get bacterial vaginosis under control it could spread to other reproductive organs, but it seems unlikely that a UTI would spread to unrelated organs.

I thought the same thing. Here is the information I found on the subject.
"Complications of UTIs are not common but do occur. Serious complications can include permanent kidney damage and widespread infection (sepsis), which can be life-threatening. The risk is greater if the infection is not treated or if the infection does not respond to antibiotics."

It looks to me like a uterine infection wouldn't be that likely, if even possible, except because of sepsis. But the urgency is still important. If you don't catch it then it can cause damage to the kidneys.

I know it's common in my family... because of sex. My cervix is inverted, kinda prone to more infection... or at least that is what the doc said. Luckily I've only had one bad infection this year... but they do really suck. Unfortunately I have to be kinda careful about that now because I don't have a doctor or insurance yet, so I kinda think that's quelled my sex drive in and of itself.

*yet another sign*

I use to get bladder infections alot, last year while I was in college I got one and didn't have time to go to the doctor in order to get medication. I ended up with a kidney infection and was in the hospital for a few days. As it stands now, I have a weak bladder and have to pee all the time (although i don't know it because I've lost alot of the sensitivity) . In my later years, I could have serious complications with my kidneys as well. Its not bad enough that I have accidents or anything.

Anyhow, I was a fool for not going to the doctor when I realized I had one, and now I'm going to pay for it for years. :(

I still get them every few months.

sillygirl 04-27-2004 09:15 AM

I had a uterine infection last year that my doctor told me most likely started as a UTI. I don't remember a lot about how he explained it. I just wanted the pain to stop.

Has anyone else heard of that.. or even has anyone been affected by that?
That is one thing that scares me... since my Aunt was unable to have children and my grandmother had a miscarriage twice... It's not something I want to ask my aunt.. and it's impossible to ask my grandmother.

Ouch. We'll you undoubtedly know how bad it can get then. No infection is a good thing and they can always go from bad to worse eh.

Going to get antibiotics is really the best idea (usually bactrim or something similar). The pain can be alleviated by OTC meds you can find in any drugstore. They will NOT eliminate the infection and like flamingpeach said, it can travel to your kidneys and send you to the hospital. I too was hospitalized for a kidney infection. I had a bladder infection that wasn't bad, thought it had gone away when really it just migrated. Spent a week hooked up to iv's, missed school and was generally miserable.

The antibiotics they gave me last year for a UTI were awesome. Can't remember what they were called. They were new on the market. I'll have to call and ask.

Macrobid is what I always got when I got a UTI. It works like a charm. Also, someone mentioned losing the feeling of having to pee, that happened to me. I make it a habit of going ever few hours even if I don't feel like I have to, because if I forget about it, I get the feeling I need to go when I can't really hold it anymore (no accidents yet tho). It's a very uncomfortable feeling
:( Anywho, see a doctor. Antibiotics are the best everytime.

Girls need girls,tis a fact.

About a day or two ago I noticed that I had to pee a lot but when I tried I barely would. And it hurt. I started drinking lots of water and I have had one bladder infection before about a year ago. As long as I drink plenty of water, I seem to be fine but it happened again this morning. It sucks because I am visiting the bathroom every ten to fifteen minutes for the first hour or two at work. I know I should go into the doctor. But I just recently moved here and don't have one yet. And at the moment I don't have insurance either. So I don't know if I still could go to the doctor without insurance or what I should do? I just got paid today so I am going to go get canberry juice and I can't find my cranberry pills at the moment either. that is what really sucks!

sillygirl 04-30-2004 03:47 PM

drink lots of cranberry juice. Lots.
