America's Greatest Hero - Womanlike

I was dismayed to see only one woman included in the America's Greatest Hero thread as of yet, and more dismayed that I did not include her.

On behalf of women, by women, I thought we might pay homage to those that came before us, or are in our midst. i hope this goes over well.

Im putting Amelia Earhart on the table.

Do they have to be American? If we take that out of it I can come up with a great list

I dont think they have to be American necessarily, perhaps they affected Americans, particularly women, to think or operate in new way that had lasting benefit (?).

The Suffragettes.

Thanks!
We might get more responses to this thread in the main forum.

Just a suggestion.

And although perhaps not the "greatest" in the grand scheme of things, she is at the top of my list: My Mama.

Marie Curie was French. Frida Kahlo was Mexican. But both of these women made a lasting impact on American women. I wouldn't be a scientist if it weren't for Marie Curie. Frida portrayed women as strong and independent in her art, inspiring many. I say they count.

Just finishing up another term in school I was introduced to another brilliant woman: Georgia O'Keeffe. An incredible artist (even if your not the art type) who became a heroine of the feminist movement and established a place for women in an arena from which women had traditionally been excluded.

How can this list not include Eleanor Roosevelt? Or Barbara ("Shoot if you must, this old grey head, but spare your country's flag") Frietchie?

Sadly, in these days we often tend to equate mere celebrity status with heroic accomplishment. Not that they are mutually exclusive.
Oprah? Maybe. Paris Hilton? Britney Spears? Never!
