Facial waxing

Did a search...didn't come up with anything...

I have very dark facial hair and wax it at home. My problem is the redness that follows...I tend to wax in the evening, and sometimes my face is still red the next day. I don't go over the same place twice, and I ice it afterwards. I've noticed if I use baby powder to help prevent the wax from sticking to the skin, the wax isn't as effective and I end up tweezing way too much. Has anyone ever used a cream or something that helps with the redness?

have you tried a different wax or some of the sugaring stuff (the lovely SuppleCow had posted a recipe for homemade sugaring stuff I believe)

You might be allergic to the wax you are using...

Hmm..never considered allergy. I'm allergic to a lot of beauty products...but I've tried a couple kinds of at home kits, including a sugaring kit...and they all leave me red...perhaps it's just my skin is sensitive to waxing in general.

Prefer tweezers for my eyebrows myself as opposed to waxing. Had skin ripped off last time I had the brows waxed and it's scared me off, that and that sticky feeling after.

I've heard the hair removal creams work ok, but definitely patch test before you do your whole lip!!

Ever thought about laser hair removal?

You probably have really sensitive skin, and waxing/sugaring tends to also remove or damage skin along with taking out the hairs.

Perhaps something more along the lines of threading or bleaching would be better for you. This website has some useful info on the details of threading: http://www.hairfacts.com/methods/threading.html

Woah woah Ouchie!! Do you use Micro Retin-A or something like? I do, and I know that you cannot do waxing anywhere that stuff is used, because of the skin tearing.
If not, I cannot even imagine the level of incompetence of the waxer (hope it wasn't a friend, lol!).

I've been interested in threading for some time now (for brows), but there's no one around here who does it.

I have, but it's not in the budget at the moment. Hubby already knows that I really, really want this done though, so when we have some spare money this is at the top of my list

The threading thing looks interesting cello, but I have no idea if there are any Indian or Muslim salons in this area. I used to bleach...but I really just like not having the hair at all. Facial depilitories (sp?) irritate my skin really badly as well, plus I don't like the stubble, so they are a no go.

I looked online last night, and I read a page that said to try some hydrocortisone cream after...I'll have to give that a try after my next session and see how it goes.

No I didn't / don't. I must have got the newbie on the job though. They should tell you if this is the case.

Threading seems to be similiar to my emjoi which I swear by for my legs & underarms. I shave every now and again for convenience, but using the emjoi makes the hair grow back slower (since it's pulling it out) and alot softer. I have a tweezer type one you can use on your face but I haven't the patience for that. I'm sure you'd be able to use an emjoi on your face & there's no redness. Perhaps only the first couple of times or so there may be.

Hydrocortisone cream, not ointment. The ointment tends to hold the heat of the inflamation, keeping the skin just as irritated. One other idea is to dip a cotton swab in COLD salt water and dabbing (not rubbing!) onto the freshly waxed area. Let air dry, then apply the hydro-cream. This is what I've been successful with using for my wax clients. Also, use a wax suited for sensitive skin.

It is also very important that the wax is spread thinly, not too hot and pulled off properly. Wax is to be applied in the direction of growth and pulled opposite. It is extremely important that the strip is kept parallel to itself when being pulled off. (you almost want the strip to rub against itself when it is being pulled. You do not want it to create any amount of a degree.
I hope I explained this clearly...good luck!

Thanks for the tip, AT13 I'll try the salt water next time I wax!

I have the same problem, Medusa. I get my eye brows waxed and I can expect puffiness for almost a week afterwards. My salon's tried everything, I'm just one of those girls who's skin gets irritated easily. Comes with the territory, I guess Let me know if you figure something out, I'd love to try it as well.
