What's it take to shake this Rookie tag this time.

Does anyone know how many posts it takes to ditch the Rookie tag? I've been leaving responses since the reboot and it doesn't seem to want to go away.

phredgreen 05-10-2003 08:04 PM

thread moved to the newbies forum... reason is abvoious enough...

keep on working at it and you'll shake the stigma... just don't do anything stupid like posting a whole pile of meaningless nonsense or useless threads/posts... that's a great way to reduce your post count. :)

Daval 05-12-2003 07:00 AM

btw, you can see your thread count by clicking on the profile button under any of your posts.

quest1mark 05-14-2003 07:50 PM

whooohooo today i finally hit tilted status! im amped! i was wondering where do i go from here? i see other users with cool quotes in there status line...and im envious.

cheerios 05-14-2003 08:19 PM

just keep going quest, you'll get there. main goal is just to enjoy the boards, man. :)

Thraeryn 05-16-2003 10:57 AM

I'm glad there was eventually a number put here. I was wondering whether or not I'd have to try to up my posts per day average to some insane amount. ;) It would've taken me a LONG time to catch up for the time I missed. :P

Thanks for the info!

eyeronic 05-19-2003 11:30 AM

How many posts till you can change your status?

cheerios 05-19-2003 12:11 PM

enough. :P

eyeronic 05-19-2003 03:46 PM

Thanks Cheers, that's so helpful.

cheerios 05-20-2003 08:48 AM

i thought so. :) relax, seriously, you will get there eventually.

Lebell 05-20-2003 09:54 AM

She's very helpful to me as well :p

Octo 05-22-2003 12:15 AM

seretogis 05-22-2003 12:49 AM

How many posts do I need before I become self-actualized? ;)

dmay 05-22-2003 05:12 AM

I'm a Tilted Newbie.Shoot I kinda like the sound of it.dmay

cheerios 05-22-2003 08:12 AM

ok, in order:

It takes voulenteering when we ask, being a good TFP'er, being helpful and respectful, and, being in the right place at hte right time ;)

I have no clue what self-actualized means, and I'm too tired to care ;)

glad you like it.

ps, not trying to offend, just being my normal smartassy self

spectre 05-25-2003 08:45 AM

The reason that we give vague answers is because if we gave out the number, people would rush to get to it, then stop posting. We want people to post because they are enjoying their time here, not because they are just looking for some forum perk. With patience and time, you will reach the levels. They aren't as high as you might think. Just go out into the other forums and have fun. After a little while the perks will come.

ghostbuster 05-25-2003 08:55 AM

well I think that by not saying it, you are making more post whores then you would simply by telling them

spectre 05-25-2003 09:07 AM

That's okay, we reduce the post counts on those who are post whores. ;)

Just have fun and stop worrying about numbers, it'll happen, just be patient. :)

GakFace 05-25-2003 09:49 PM

Spectre is right, if you post whore, you'll notice an abrubt drop in your post count. The forums are here to talk, focus on that, and then all the other things become perks. All i knew was the avatar number, but beyond that I know nothing. I am over 350 Posts now but I do no care when i might find a new "perk" I am having a great time on these forums as I make more and more lifetime friends, and isn't that what its all about anyways? For those of you who are on the forum to just have an avatar or a title, just make your own forum and do that yourself. But if you're here to make friends, you've come to the right place.

ghostbuster 05-25-2003 09:52 PM

right... well i honestly dont care either way... im just saying that thier so called method of not inceting people to spam doesnt seem to work, and i dont really feel this is a place to meet friends as it is to get answers and help from people who you dont have to worry about thier opinions

Which might explain why you are having such a tough time understanding TFP.
This is a community.
Not a place where you can be anonymous and get things without caring about how people feel.
I do what I can to help other members because I know they will do the same for me.
A community can not survive without support and participation.
A polite society requires respect, sharing and courtesy.
Our methods have worked well renough to keep a large complex and every growing web based community going for quite some time now.

The site crashed and was down for a while. Everyone had to start over. That's what he meant by "this time."

nickt 06-25-2003 04:49 PM

I'm new to the site and I love it! I think its a great way to express yourself - and kill time at work!!!

TenDeuChen 06-25-2003 11:31 PM

I hope to find great interesting discussions to take part in...or whatever else it would take to see jenna and heidi...lol...

elibaen 06-26-2003 11:36 AM

how 'bout we start one tendeuchen?

grayman 07-07-2003 07:37 PM

I used to care about my post count just so I wouldn't get booted, now I just look around and post when I feel the need, whatever happens with my status happens.

nulltype 07-09-2003 09:00 PM

I wish there was a better way to determine how much someone contributes to the community than just the number of times they have posted. It seems that post counts only encourage people to make contentless posts. I have seen this happen on at least a few forums, but have not seen any other ways, besides specifically granting people special status, to accomplish this without just going by post count. Some sort of system where people could rate posts based on content, and have those ratings reflect on the creater of the post might be nice, but also probably very complicated to implement correctly. Has anyone seen an improvement to the current system? I ask out of curiosity, I do not expect some reconstruction of the current system.

07-16-2003 10:44 AM

if you don't post enough, you get booted?

woah. i should start reading the rules

/threadjacker

1234567 07-17-2003 07:01 PM

You're much braver than I to cruise the TFP at work. I kinda like my job, and I doubt the higher-ups would approve if they found out.

anti fishstick 07-17-2003 07:10 PM

when did the site crash?

i just reach tilted today :)

beejay 07-17-2003 09:34 PM

I had just reached avatar status, then went off to Iraq, then the site crashed. I don't mind starting over. I'm using the same screen name and (hopefully) some of the regulars recognize me!

The only thing I miss is the member's playground and exhibition forum access... I'll get there again one day...

As long as you've posted, and don't do anything really bad (flamewar, kid porn, etc ...) you'll be fine. If you plan to take an extended leave, like a few months for the army or something, and you want to make sure you're set, PM a mod or admin, and we'll make sure you don't get whacked.

greydenn 07-22-2003 01:44 PM

Here is post number one;)

FitzerValve 07-22-2003 09:24 PM

damn time to get to work

Fisher 07-22-2003 10:28 PM

Okay, I'm a rookie who has only made a handful of posts. I like this forum, and I'm impressed by the way it is run. But isn't there a fundamental flaw in judging someone's "value" to a community by how much they "talk" (post)? Not even how much, but how often!

I'm more the kind of person who only speaks when I have something to say. In fact, I get very irritated by people who seem to think that their opinion carries more weight if they voice it often enough or loudly enough.

I didn't even know about this system of perks for posts until now. It is very clever and well intentioned but I think it just encourages people to talk a lot, rather than say something meaningful.

I don't have any idea how it could be done better, I guess I'm just feeling like a wallflower at a frat party. Sorry if I rambled.

cheerios 07-23-2003 12:01 AM

Fisher: we're here to be a community. To do that we have to enourage members to participate. I understand the " i don't want to put my foot into my mouth" kind of mentality, but really, how hard is it to be polite, and jump into a conversation? there are TONS of them going on, and everyone seems to enjoy them... bah, what I'm getting at is this: we don't bite, jump on in, hte water's fine. wallflowers never have any fun!

(done mixing metaphors now ;) )

TwistedFate 07-23-2003 01:01 AM

I don't think it's an issue of Fisher being a wallflower. I'm the same way as him. I have posted a cubic buttload (picked that up here, BTW, and it is my new favorite saying) today, but that is just because I had looked around enough and felt it was time for me to jump in and participate so there were a lot of threads that I was catching up on. My posting will probably slow down to a more normal (for me) level of maybe 1 or 2 posts a day in a day or two. I just don't have a lot to say. I never have, and I don't feel a need to speak(post) just to hear(read) myself speak(post). That's just the way I am. I post when I have something of value to add. I feel we are all being held to the same standards as what you consider to be optimal good users when you set those kind of limits. And my optimal doesn't necessarily correspond to yours. I could post more often, but it would be forced and fake and the mods would see that and reduce my post count anyway, right.

I know that I can donate to remove any restrictions, and as soon I get another job and have a steady income I plan to do so whether my posting habits put me into the acceptable category or not. I am a mod on another very active board and know what kind of expense it is to run something of this magnitude. I like it here and will remain here as long as I'm allowed.

No system is perfect and I see that the ruling parties here are working hard to make this the best place they can and I appreciate all that they are doing. I don't know what the answer to the problem is, but I know that the system as it stands now means that I will probably be at or below the threshold for a good user. So be it, I can't change that part of me and I will live with it. Keep trying though, each change teaches us all what works and what doesn't.

Another problem with that is that most people are too lazy to rate every single post. At least, I know that I am. Perhaps just topics? Hmm...maybe just have ratings for the topic or each individual user. Actually though, it might just turn into a popularity contest, and even "unpopular" people do actually make up a community. I find that nothing brings people closer together than a pariah to mock.

Oh, and on kind of a side note...I was wondering if it's at all possible to change one's user name. I know some boards allow that, but it doesn't look as this one does. I was going to re-register a different one before I started working on actually joining in, but registration seems to be closed. =/

Damn y'all for making me come out of pseudo-lurking status.
