Banned from TFP?

I've seen several references to people being banned from this forum. Now there are some obvious things that a person shouldn't do, but there also seems to be another set of rules for forum participation.
I guess what I'm asking is what things should a new member avoid to avoid being banned?

They used to ban people who merely lurked on the titty board and didn't actually post anything.

For the most part they keep things pretty well-regulated around here, and don't really take anything from anyone.

Not exactly. We used to shut off access to the Titty Board for people who didn't post or contribute (not necessarily money, just pictures or a few words of thanks to the people who did provide the content.) Most just wandered off when they found that their porn was gone. Now, the Titty Board is no longer the site's main attraction; think of it as an evolution from a porn site to a community that might have porn tucked away somewhere.

Any type of negativity in your posts will get you on the moderators list and if you continue with any type of negative responses you will be booted.

See now, I don't necessarily agree with that...but I guess that would be negativity, wouldn't it?

If you question people in a mature manner, even if you're being negative, I doubt you'd get banned.

This board is all about maturity.

looks like twistedmosaic is well on his way to being a big part of this place. He already can read between the lines on how this place works.

Negativity is fine, but there is a line between being negative and attacking someone or someones ideals. That is what you have to watch for. Offending people is generally to be avoided, you are free to disagree with them though.

For instance:

I dont believe in god, couldnt do it.

Thats not offensive, but it is a disagreement, and is negative.

God's my bitch.

That is offensive. Goodbye.

Just use common sense, and youll do fine.

If your still unsure, read around a bit, do your research. See what has and hasnt been said, and follow the writing trend as you see it.

And may god have mercy on your soul

So wait, if an idea offends someone, it's taboo?
Isn't that like the Catholic Church or Republicans?
Isn't some confrontation necessary for progress?

nowhere close. If it is said in such a manner as to deliberately attack/offend/annoy someone without making a meaningful and decent point in the conversation, it violates the rules.

Every topic will find a way to offend somebody, but if it is done in such a manner to be emotionally-neutral yet intellectually intensive, that is perfect.

saying "your religion seems to be a misguided set of rules that are simply social control based on the lack of education of its followers" is pretty offensive, and could make quite a few people take a second look at what you and they believe.

HOWEVER, saying "your religion is a bunch of horseshit" is far from what is accepted on this board. If you're disagreeing for the sake of a continuation of discourse, that's fine--if you're disagreeing for the sake of embarassing or harassing someone, that is not

j/k. i guess i forgot how intimidating the rules seemed at first, but now that i've been here awhile, they seem like there's so much leeway it's not even funny. it's finding the proper approach that matters

Gandhi also said when asked what he thought of Western Civilization, "I think it would be a marvelous thing."

I found this thread because I was wondering what one had to do to get banned... thenI saw the post from numist and cherrios and they both had good advice... and then they were banned... hmmm so is this a case of "Do as I say, not as I do..." or is there something else here that a rookie like myself should worrie about?

Thanks

no you shouldn't worry.. there were some things that happend in the past and the person was banned because they didn't follow the rules of the tfp charter. As long as you follow the guidlines it shouldn't be a problem. The rules are easy to follow and there aren't that many Happy Posting!

Do some people use "Banned" as their custom title? Because that would explain a bit.

And I believe Loser is like a super-ban (for lack of a better word).

I have seen some people use Banned and Loser as their custom title. But normally this is only used when the user is actually banned.

As far as the people in this thread who were banned.... Honestly, it's best not to ask why they were banned. Why not? Cause it just doesn't matter. Stuff happened, then stuff resulted then some more stuff happened and they were banned. No biggie.

Give it try and find out. I'm sure the staff here will find it amusing.

As guccilvr said, people changed over time and crossed over to the dark side. There is no explanation for a specific individual becuase in some cases the reasons for their removal were not public and should never be. Trust that it took more than a minor irritation to cause the banning.

I've sometimes wondered what cause some people who seemed to be responsible with the contributions to be banned. Mostly to know what NOT to do so I wouldn't be banned. I've heard over and over though that you will be warned first before getting completely banned. I pretty much figure that I haven't been personally reprimanded yet by a mod about anything so I can be sure that my behavior thus far has been acceptable. If perchance I am ever warned I will just be careful not to repeat the performance that brought the warning in the first place.

Exactly.

Rules? What rules?

Oh, you mean the "don't be an asshole" rule that everyone should follow in their day to day life?

My mother taught that to me when I still wore shorts.

I wear shorts, but I am a personal trainer. As far as banning, I got a couple of warnings during some heated debates and I am still here. That was in the beginning, and by following the advice of the moderators, it has helped me be a little better at making a point. The mods were not knocking my argument, but simply my delivery.

There is a grave difference between saying something that is potentially offensive and intentionally offereing offense. I think that most people are smart enough to know the difference, and often it's just a matter of thinking twice before clicking the submit button.
