Mind-boggling amount of forums..

But is it just me, or does anyone else find the number of choices or forums kind of "intimidating"? I think there are too many, I guess I'll get used to it though. It just takes so long to read all of them.. I guess I'll have to be selective.

lol most people are... selective that is. find the things that interest YOU. doesn't have to be everything, or even most things. :)

You don't need to read everything. Just go where you feel comfortable and make yourself at home. That's the point of all of the forums, to give everyone a place where they can feel free to discuss almost anything.

A good way to deal with the intimidation factor is to click the "view new posts" button in the upper right corner and scan what interests you. That gets you up to speed on current conversations fast.

you can find a lot of great people and topics

different things interest different people, e.g. myself, I have a lot of posts in entertainment and music but pretty much none in cooking or motors. Read what interests you. Also, this is a very friendly forum, you shouldn't feel intimidated.

I suggest hanging out in one or two particular forums. After awhile you'll become more acustomed to how things work and feel the need to branch out. For instance, this is one of the first times I've ever poked around in the newbies forum. :)

At first, don't really look at all the of them. You aren't obligated to read every last one of them. Just start out slowly, and eventually if you feel like it, explore the other forums. Another suggestion though is to make sure you read the notices in each of the forums. Seems there is some mighty good advice in those.

I think a large amount of forums helps to cover all the different categories so that there is no extra stuff in a forum that doesn't belong there. Variety is the spice of life.

I just browse, find a topic that I want to post on, and do so. I feel like its more the marrier (sp?). Besides, if there were less forums, there would just be a hell of a lot more clutter.

I love the way this forum is set up. All the past forums I've been to have been so cluttered and disorganized, but this system allows a lot more users to join in a single community and still be able to avoid everything you don't want.

So far, this forum has my compliments, and attention. The more I read, the more I want to read. Now if I can just go back and find that link to 'the history of TFP'...

I finished reading the Newbie section, and clicked onto Health & Fitness. Again, I ended up spending my morning reading, reading, reading, and then replying. TFP is so diverse. I'm getting over the amazement, slowly.

I too have ventured in and lost track of time. I suggest you leave a trail of breadcrumbs.

I see from my own experience, E.H., that I am more of a reader than a replier. It is the lazy way I out I suppose, although it is quite easy to waste an inordinate amount of time if you're not very careful...

I mainly stick around the forums that interest me. I actually don't go to many of the sections in this forum at all, but no one says ya have to -- that's the key. I visit the Gaming Section the most, followed by Computers and Entertainment, and the Titty Board last. Pick a board or two and stick with them for a while, that's what I did.

For instance, I will never be caught dead in the Politics Forum (or alive, for that matter).

But anywhere else in The Academy is fair game :D

I am probably the oldest guy on this forum, and have been here through several generations (versions)...and I am still amased at the new general topics that appear.....some I have never had time to even get into.

and that is the beauty of being a part of this community--if you don't want to, you don't have to.

and it isn't just the subjet matter, its the people---like those crazy Assuies and guys in Newzealand, Mexico, and even Pghred out there in Arizona...they are family...and you will soon be a very close part of it ---like it or not...:icare: L/Y all

Soooooo right, I just reached tilted status yesterday and I feel so happy and special. I really love this place.

well the forum i admin on has over 70 different forums. it sucks sometiems. but oh well people seem to post in atleast 2/3rds of them usualy....so cant be all that bad

it's different but i like it; there's something for everyone.

takes some getting use to but as every individual is unique so are there interests. So this gives you a chance to explore other avenues.

Don't try to keep up, you will go insane, or lode your job. Just let the tide take you where it will.

You're not the only one who feels intimidated. Sometimes instead of posting, I'll get a panic attack and go drool on myself in the corner.

If I were to fear outing myself as the complete dork that I am, I'd never post a thing. This would be bad. I like having all the different choices... I can check out the forum that best suits how I feel... I remember back in the day when it was just the titty board, general discussion, and a help forum (something along those lines)

I'm usually able to keep up with conversations and all, but this place is overwhelming.

And then I realize I just joined and I'm only seeing a leaf on the tree, not the whole friggin forest.

Must continue to avoid thinking about it or . . . BOOM. . .

It's like you try to get all the forums read and keep up, only to realize, that what you just read is old news and has been posted over by 500 more topics for you to be sucked into.

I'm looking forward to reading lots this weekend.

That is what makes the member base so large is that there is something that appeals to almost everyone. It takes while to find your groove but once you find it you'll like it.
