Two spirits, one heart

Hi to everyone. Looks like a good place to hang out. Want to put out a holler to all the two spirited ppl out there. Hope this is a friendly place to be.

Welcome! Pretty much everyone here is friendly. Well, except me, of course, especially if you ask around.

Halx 05-04-2010 12:01 PM

What exactly is "two spirited"?

Yep, I'm unfriendly too, welcome G. :)

Geez, Dave, I figured you'd be the first to agree that I was unfriendly. Apparently I'm going to have to work on you some more. ;)

And Halx asked the question that I failed to ask.

Wikipedia says it's a Native American crossdresser.

Two-Spirit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

Two-Spirit People (also Two Spirit or Twospirit), is an English term that emerged in 1990, out of the third annual inter-tribal Native American/First Nations gay and lesbian conference, in Winnipeg, to describe Native Americans who fulfill one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among many Native Americans and Canadian First Nations indigenous groups. The mixed gender roles encompassed by the term historically included wearing the clothing and performing the work associated with both men and women.

Thank you, TK. I was prepared to be all skeptic, but seeing as it is more of a demographic term, I salute you, two-spirited one.

i think everybody is two-spirited to a degree; yin and yang, masculine and feminine, there are degrees of both in all of us. so welcome, and looking forward to your sharing!

Did wikipedia's definition match yours, Giana? I'd love to hear more about it, if so. Is it a lifestyle thing or just ceremonial? Is this a tribe-specific thing? My wife is Navajo and I haven't heard anything about it from her.
