When i worked for a 'major magazine' we had someone on staff to make sure that no ads got inappropriately placed... we'd never let ads dictate editorial content... but - - that blunder will cost them some free ad space i'm sure..

With all the content-based ads on the internet I'm desensitized by that sort of thing now. This is very common.

Yep. If I were History Flight, I'd be on the phone to my sales rep at the paper screaming my head off.

I'll have to dig through my old backups, after the bombings in Bali a few years ago one of the Australian papers had the whole front page devoted to the bombing. At the bottom of the page was an ad for a supercharged Mercedes that said "The Mercedes Kompressor. You'll be blown away."

I have the newspaper somewhere... The morning of the challenger explosion... a local newspaper had a story inside the paper about Christa McAuliffe... and the headline read... "Students Happy To See Her Go"... (which of course meant that her students were happy to see her go into space on an heck of an adventure) .. Sadly... She just went... no one caught the oops...

Newspaper and magazine people have some of the most twisted senses of humor I've ever had the pleasure to work with... It was an accident, but it was also funny...

The magazine I worked for, actually added the postion of 'ad checker' after they got called out for running a picture of a very healthy child in an insurance ad, opposite an a story about starving children in some african country... complete with art.. It just seemed very inappropriate to have this healthy robust child next to starving children.

For a newspaper, those kind of thing are pretty rare.

However, if articles like that were posted online, there's always an advertisement that is related to the article itself.

It's so easy for that to happen. It's unfortunate.

Editorial and advertising are completely separate departments in most media organisations, and editorial don't usually even get sight of the ads until they're in the paper. Usually it's a bored production sub-editor somewhere who gets to see the actual finished product, the one who does the CMYK separations, etc.
