Howard Stern's webcast on Yahoo

Today marked Howard's end on FM and the beginning of him on Sirius.

Interesting. Really pumping up his being "the last of a dying breed". Got some really good jabs at the FCC, Religious Right and Clear Channel.

Easy to say you're not bowing to them when you are getting paid $500 million to go to pay radio.

It's funny how Yahoo is plugging how Stern will not be censored but yet they are.

"Religious Right is the American Taliban"

"Clear Channel lost their audience for firing him"

A very drunken lot..... Robin, Arte and so on.

Thanked a lot of people, the NYPD, the military, and the audience many many times.

these Yahoo people doing commentary suck....... the chick talks like she never listened to, or knows anything about Howard..... The guy acts like an expert on it all...... very shitty...... they needed people from his show doing this. The chick needs to do this topless and in a thong standing up.

They keep talking about how many people are there and I am sure there are.... but no true camera angles to show how many.

Now they talk a little bit about how the government wants to censor sattelite radio, cable tv and the internet.....

but didn't spend much on that, the commentators went back to talking about how big the crowd is.....

some shots of him on the bus..... wow he looks old

Showing him on the bus going to the Hard Rock.... there were a few audience shots.... there was a pretty decent sized crowd.....

Poppinjay 12-16-2005 07:19 AM

The guy will actually be covering Howard for a whole 'nother Sirius channel, like how FoodTV covers food.

One channel, news about Howard, nothing else. I respect the show he's built, but come on. His E! show is a bit of a stretch. How many news items can you do on, "we almost talked her into taking off her top for an hour."

pan6467 12-16-2005 07:36 AM

It is history in the making, like him or not, this is history we are watching.

I think Sirius totally overpaid and may regret it but we'll see.

He's sounding like Ron Popeil now trying to sell Sirius.

But ya have to love the man and what he is saying today, even if it is for his own profit.

Talking about radio and how it is being destroyed. Making some great points.

Poppinjay 12-16-2005 07:54 AM

Eh, I could rant endlessly about how terrestrial radio has reacted to satellite by laying down and being its prison bitch, but I won't.

I like Howard, when he isn't selling his movie, book, CD, which hopefully he will not be doing on Sirius.

The big problem with satellite is that the funding for the Stern move is 100% speculative, and it's a make or break for Sirius. They sell to 20% of his fan base or they're out of business. And XM is tied to the fate of GM, which isn't looking that great.

Listened to the final show and the webcasta nd if you only saw the webcast you missed so much. The webcast has been rather crappy. Bad camera shots, poor sound. Very little time spent showing what is actually going on on stage.. all the speeches that werent showed, all the chaos and partying that isnt being showed.. all the boobies that are flying that arent being showed. to say that it could have been better is an understatement.

The show itself on the radio was pretty good though.

No, Clear Channel lost their audience years ago by sucking the life out of every station that they touched.

I wish I could pick up the signal in my apartment, unfortunately for whatever reason I can't get radio waves or cell phone signals in my apartment.

And I agree with Poppin, when Howard is just Howard and not selling anything he is great... noone like him. But when he is selling a book, cd, dvd, or whatever.... it preoccupies everything.

Would really have liked to have heard Jackie yesterday.

Radio shock jock moves to satilite so he can have more lesbian action and say 'fuck'. Real important history there.

I think satalite radio is the future, but it would be the future with or without lesbians talking about their sex toys. Besides they already have that on the playboy station.

 I stand corrected ..... but that was a Howard quote.

I'm listening in Phoenix. They mutilated his final speech. So many times they'd stop mid sentence and start up again.

Sirius has added 2M listeners in the last year. That is just hte beginning. 2M*$12.95/mo*12mo = $310.8M/yr*5yrs=$1,554,000,000. His contract is for $500M and that includes all production costs. That doesn't include any of the commercial revenue that he will bring in.

His contract is still a what 1/15th of that (1.5 billion/ 500 mill/ 5years). You take out taxes, their advertising, paying other talent on other shows, salaries to Karmazin and other execs, and so on. Looks to me like a loss so far, I don't know the numbers but my guess would be they need to get double that to start showing a true profit. Which I am sure they will but can they last long enough before they do?

The reason this happened was due to all the people in the crowd yelling fuck and such. When he started his speech i turned down my radio and turned up the webcast because i knew this would happen. :p

I don't think the DJs will make much. You always hear how DJs on FM get paid nothing, I'm sure satellite is no different (esp since they aren't needed as much). A lot more people will get Sirius over the next few years.

Poppinjay 12-16-2005 10:43 AM

I don't mean to come off as a know it all, so let me preface this with the fact that I've worked in broadcast media from a lowly DJ to a manager since I was 18, looking at this EXTREMELY conservatively, counting the DJ's only...

They have 184 channels. Some of those are jock free. Some others have high profile hosts that will make a lot. Let's throw out those high profile folks and not even consider them. Let's say they get to a point where they have DJs at only 110 of the 184 channels. And let's say it's just one DJ all day. If they pay them $30k, by the time you add benefits the total comes to $5.5 million, annually.

And that would be the rate for inexperienced or troubled talent.

Those 110 jocks are not going to be alone in their endeavor. They will need engineers and they will need managers. A manager can't really handle more than five disperate formats at a time, and that's stretching it. Someone will also have to program the music, which is done with programs like Selector that require individual licenses for each user. That runs at about $3k a pop. BMI wants their cut. ASCAP too. Also, it would be impossible to get that many on air folks and engineers and not have them vote to join AFTRA and NABET. Then their salaries double.

And then there's the satellite system which costs more than the rest combined and requires a considerable amount of maintenance.

Keeping those finances in mind, the whole point of satellite is to compete with what people percieve crappy commercial radio. By the way, no commercials for the Howard Stern Show from now on, he's listener supported. So you have a bunch of low wage jocks competing decently with small town radio and getting beat in the urban markets.

A real capsulation of this situation hit home when Stern was on the Today show leading Katie through the Sirius studios. "Oh look, there's Tony Orlando! That's why this is great, how long has it been since you heard him? Commercial radio doesn't play him anymore! Hey, there's INXS!" A two hit wonder and a formerly hip band that turned to reality TV to get some juice.

Stern is the franchise. Industry folks say he needs a 20 percent subscribership of his current listeners just to pay for himself.

trickyy 12-16-2005 12:31 PM

anyone see him on bill oreilly? it was great...two egomaniacs taking shots at one another. stern made fun of the No Spin jackets, saying they weren't stylish enough. at one point, howard asked if they could take it outside. eventually oreilly tried to calm things down, saying that they were just joking around, and let howard talk about himself for a while.

O'REILLY: Who's your primary audience? All entertainers on all these programs have a primary audience. Who is your primary audience?

STERN: You know as well as I do, my primary audience are strippers, hookers, and crack whores. And I love them all.
...
STERN: Let's talk about that chazarai [Yiddish word for "junk"] now you're selling. It looks like you emptied out a junkyard and slapped your name on everything.

O'REILLY: OK, here's where we go.

STERN: And you've got a briefcase, the Bill O'Reilly briefcase. I wouldn't be caught dead with that. No offense.

O'REILLY: No, of course not.
...
O'REILLY: All right. Give me the "Factor" jacket. I'm only going to give you this "No Spin" jacket if you wear it. Are you going to wear it? Look, this is a beautiful, beautiful jacket.

STERN: It's not. Let me tell you why it's not. Can I be a fashion designer for a second?

O'REILLY: Look at the way you're dressed.

STERN: You see this? This grabs you around the middle. A guy's got a gut, this is going to squeeze his fat.

O'REILLY: This is a terrific garment. Now are you going to wear it? I'll give it to you.

STERN: The "No Spin" jacket?

O'REILLY: Yes. With the flag, the American flag. You are American.

STERN: I won't wear it, but I will give it to a crack whore.

O'REILLY: No. You're giving it back. I'm not having this on some lesbian somewhere. I'm not going to have it.

rsl12 12-16-2005 01:22 PM

hahahah trickyyy that sounds like it was a good show. I'm sorry i missed it.

Psycho Dad 12-16-2005 04:38 PM

I will admit I will tune in January 9th to hear his initial Sirius broadcast. But I will likely quickly turn it back to Raw Dog, Hair Nation, The Vault, Classic Rewind or one othe other Sirius stations I enjoy. I just can't see his uncensored show being anything that spectacular. I just assume that if the pixelated boobies on his E! show aren't anything that wonderful, how is him saying "I want to fuck you" to whatever tramp he has on the show going to be any better than his regular "I want to do you"?

The fact that I get commercial free music, Raw Dog uncensored comedy and every NFL game for less than the cost of a can of Pepsi a day is what took me to Sirius, not a skinny, unfunny egomaniac.

santafe5000 12-19-2005 04:15 PM

Thank God i have XM. Never understood his attraction. Paying money just to hear some guy use foul language and degrade women and people with disabilities is not my idea of wise spending.
To each his own i guess.

XM has it's share of lame broadcasters too... both systems have afew soo both have a choice.... you XM people are paying for more french canadian programming that sirius users which is even more of a waste of money and isn't quite "ideal wise spending"

Catdaddy33 12-20-2005 04:24 AM

Saw Stern on the Daily Show and I think Jon Stewart nailed it when asked him did he think he would be successful, cause since he started he always pushed the line and complained about the station's management, now that he has the freedom of Sirius will it be the same... Howard just said he'll make up people to be mad about..blah blah...

I have XM, and was pushed to it for commercial free music and the comedy channels, they have Opie and Anthony who I tryed listening to but their bathroom humor gets old after about 5 minutes or so...

pan6467 12-20-2005 06:15 AM

Listened to "Best of Stern" on my way home from work.

HILARIOUS they had a very drunken Sam Kinison on (the day he missed the Joan Rivers and David Letterman shows) and a very sober David Brenner.

Now this was funny stuff. I don't see him doing it on Sirius.... of course noone is Kinison either. Pure magic.

Psycho Dad 01-10-2006 05:02 AM

Was Stern's first day on Sirius what everyone expected. Just curious. I didn't make him a factor in my decision on sattelite radio carriers, but I did tune in for a bit to see if he lived up to the hype. I don't have a very long drive to work so shows like this aren't something that I have time to get into either though.

I thought it was exactly what I expected, but I wasn't expecting much. A few things did put a grin across me gob. But for the most part (IMHO) there is more on sattelite than morning drive DJ type shows to listen to. However I will expect Stern to pick up steam as he gets used to what he can do.

Did those who bought a Sirius receiver get what they hoped for? Did those who just had Sirius for other reasons get surprised?

Marvelous Marv 01-10-2006 07:09 PM

I haven't gotten satellite radio yet, so I'm curious. You mentioned that you chose it because it was "commercial free," but there was a comment earlier about "commercial revenue."

So does it have commercials, or not?

Psycho Dad 01-10-2006 07:35 PM

Some channels have commercials, some don't. The music stations are commercial free where the news, sports, comedy, etc. are not. BTW, Stern is not commericial free.

Stern was funny 20 years ago... He's not been funny since he became syndicated... got way too big for his britches...

Degrading women? I'm not so sure that he does that... the bimbettes that he has on his show are their by choice -I'm not sure that an attention whore can actually be degraded...

dickie 01-12-2006 01:40 PM

Stern is played out ...he called it in years ago . Now he is doing just enough to keep his audience listening . He had a year to plan for his new show of his new regime and what did he come out of the box with .....8 month old Pat O Brien tapes , An over the hill star trek guy doing the news , music and teasers ( which are done on free radio )

WOW ...ground breaking stuff HooHoo !@

ObieX 01-12-2006 02:23 PM

Haven't heard his new stuff. I signed up for the 3 day trial so i could maybe hear him online but apparently he isn't on online (nor are a lot of the talk radio guys on sirius). I was rather disappointed.

I'm certainly not gonna pay for satelite radio, even for Howard Stern. There's just no music that i really enjoy anymore that i dont have access to for free. Really i would only want to listen to Howard, but he doesn't seem worth anywhere hnear $13 a month.

I gotta disagree with you on 1 piont there dickie. George Takei is comedy gold.

Over at aintitcoolnews.com, a fan has posted a blow by blow account of the first broadcast. He enjoyed it, and the staff revelations are pretty astonishing.
