Help! Vegas - What's so great about it?
Ok. So I have a group of friends that has convinced me to go to Vegas with them next week.
I don't drink. I don't gamble. I see nothing of worth in my general price bracket in Vegas (poor student) and I don't understand why they want me to come along and pretend to enjoy myself. It's really the only option that I have to hang out with a friend that has been out of the country for the last couple of years. So that's why I'm going. 1 - HELP me understand why I would want to go to Vegas, 2 - What are some fun things you'd recommend doing while I'm there? 3 - Do you have any advice on keeping myself entertained while everyone else is out drinking and gambling. Thank you! |
I've been to Reno and Lake Tahoe, but not Vegas. I don't have much interest in gambling, but some of the floor shows were worth the visit. If you can scrape up the cash for the Cirque Du Soleil show, I will forever be envious of you.
Seeing Vegas might be worth your time, just for the "sin city" aspect of it. You will never see that many lights again. :) |

Now that that cheap joke is out of the way... There are tons of shows in Vegas. Not just casinos, clubs and bars. However I have no idea what you may be able to afford being a student. If the two friends you have that are going can afford it, are you going to feel out of place if you can't. |
I don't gamble... and for all intents and purposes I don't drink... well only a little... :)
Vegas is fun... The people watching in the casinos (try to find a clock) is a riot... just wandering around is interesting... The fountains at the bellagio are beautiful as is the hotel.. The Roller coaster on top of the stratosphere is fun... you could hang out with them while they are gambling - most casinos comp the players drinks- doesn'tmean you can't drink soda or juice... The hoover dam is really interesting to take a ride out to... |
Great Shows? A lot of artists play there, you might wanna check that out, however the tickets might be pricy...

The shows we went to were pretty pricey, but I enjoyed them.
See the water show at the Bellagio. See the sharks at the Mandalay Bay. Every night, there is a free pirate show at Treasure Island. Go to the mall on the strip and wander in the pricey boutiques...they have some incredible stuff, and it's fun to just look at it. Have your picture taken with the human statue at the Venetian. The Venetian also had themed shows inside their shopping area...people in Renaissance clothes singing and dancing. There is an erupting volcano outside the Mirage every night. The Bellagio has a free botanical garden to visit. There is a court jester show at the Excaliber every 45 minutes. See the lions at the MGM Grand. There is a ton of free stuff (I know how it is to be a poor student) in Vegas, you just know how to look. In fact, I just googled "free things to do in Las Vegas" and got some of this on the sites that came up. I"m sure you can have a good time there, even if you don't drink and gamble! |
Ride the coaster at NYNY, go to the Star Trek ride at the Hilton. Go see the laser light show in Old Town.
Vegas has lots to do for non-gamblers. That being said, it's a city that's sold it's soul to the Devil, IMO. I would never live there. |
As a lot of other people said, the show's are amazing.
If you can't afford them, the really big hotels also have free shows. Even the free shows are quite entertaining. But come on, you're in VEGAS! You gotta play a hand of blackjack or something :) |
