Ants Eat Woman's Eye !

Heard this on CBS radio... then saw it online

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/SP232486.htm

"KOLKATA, India, Nov 15 (Reuters) - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.

"It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident," hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India's overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people."

It reminds me of that one part in 1984 with the rats... you know... it's awful that somebody lost their eye, but it's a cool way to lose it.

Interesting...

having just come from India, the conditions there are unbelieveable, so I can believe this story.

I would like to point out that the country is making a conscious shift, changing the English spelling of Calcutta to the more ancient Kolkata. There are a few other cities that are being spelled in the ancient manner. From what a local explained to me is that it is a "return to roots" type thing that some of the more conservatives are pushing.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure being eaten alive is the worst way to lose ANYTHING. I can't think of a worse way to lose a body part, in terms of the psychological impact and intense physical pain.

Why don't we start by investigating how long it takes for a couple of those nurses to expect some help, after they start screaming for help when they are buried neck deep in an an anthill, with honey poured on their faces.
Imagine, for a moment, the pain that this woman must have been in. Now imagine the amount of screaming that she must have been doing. That's just normal pain from infection? I have a very high tolerance for pain, yet I would imagine that having my eyeball eaten out, by ants, would have me screaming like a schoolgirl on a naval base. This goes so far beyond gross negligence.

So... pain from post surgery is normal? Pain killers don't exist in India?

I guess it's easier to just hire nurses who can ignore the screaming.

/shudders

Scary. Scary. Scary.

Cyn, that's interesting. I remember about a year ago, when I was taking a world geography class and we were studying the area, I noticed that some of the names were spelled odd and in some cases changed completely. I never asked why and soon after, forgot all about it.

Yeah, Bill O'Rights

Must have been a lot of ants.
I would think there was a trail or at least some of 'em visable.
The nurses never took a good look at the lady.
At the least they should be fired.

That creeps me out. I don't like ants.
When I was little, I was sitting, playing in my sand-pit and I got swarmed by ants. They were in my mouth, in my ears, up my nose, everywhere. I do not like ants.
I don't recall them nibbling anything though......

I think that's the most disgusting hospital story I've ever heard. It sound like something out of the most disturbing horror movie ever. And it also shows that Hollywood writers have NOTHING in comparison to reality.

maleficent: "So... pain from post surgery is normal? Pain killers don't exist in India?"

Actually, "nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection." So evidently its post op infection that is normal. Pain is just a by product.
This is not an improvement.
But since "It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients." one would think they might check for such things. I mean, if being eaten by insects is not uncommon, wouldn't you at least LOOK at a patient who was screaming in pain?

AGREED!!! This is the shittiest way to loose your eye EVER!! I could think of a hundred ways to loose and eye, but ants WTF!!! I agree with Bill O'Rights feed those lazy nurses to the ants and see if they feel it. There's a first time for everything, and this has got to be the first time a patient in a hospital lost there eye to ants.

I remember a fictional movie about ants back in the early 70's. The ants were taking over, swarming, killing, getting into places they shouldn't. These scientists were studying the ants out in the desert trying to learn how to control things. Of course everyone died. Horror flick stuff but more cerebral than the "day of the big animal" stuff that followed. That movie had me freaked out about ants getting into places they shouldn't for years. Ugh.

Thanks a bunch, ChrisJericho.

As for hospitals and care, nurses can be the most wonderful people in the world. They'll protect you from fear and despair while saving your life. But they can also be the most jaded, hardened, and incompetent troubleshooters you'll ever meet. Every job has its over and under-achievers. Watch your ass. Should you find yourself concerned about something the staff seems unresponsive to, STOP BEING POLITE. Get the next level up involved as if your life depended on it. It often does.
