Commonly Confused Words test

From the same site that gave us the 'What kind of society do you prefer test' comes the 'Commonly Confused Words test.' I see a bunch of threads on making the rounds on TFP regarding grammar and diction, but this one quantifies it into a score.

Commonly Confused Words test.

I scored 'English Genius,' which means I'm now eligible to have people nitpick my grammar. ;)

Commonly Confused Words test.

I scored 'English Genius,' which means I'm now eligible to have people nitpick my grammar. ;)

I also got 'English Genius'. But oddly, on my breakdown, I did my best against other people on the Advanced and Expert in comparison to the earlier levels

I guess when using big words, I'm expert, but i don't does quite so goodly at the eazier stufs.

spindles 11-03-2005 11:35 PM

so far everybody here is a genius :)

92% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 80% Expert

You scored higher than 22% on Beginner
You scored higher than 36% on Intermediate
You scored higher than 65% on Advanced
You scored higher than 43% on Expert

Supple Cow 11-03-2005 11:54 PM

Hmm... I only missed one. It was the paid/payed one. I'm always unsure about it, but I never looked it up until tonight. I've seen "payed" in too many places, and I always suspected it wasn't right. That was a fun way to stay sharp!

FngKestrel 11-03-2005 11:55 PM

I think the 'higher than' breakdown is relative to your demographic data that you input on the last page.

And I was wondering if this thread might turn out to all be geniuses because the posting group is self-selecting. :hmm:

analog 11-03-2005 11:59 PM

I got a perfect score. I'm not a genius, i'm a writer. It could be both, but i'd never say so.

Nice! I missed hanged/hung. Not much use for 'hanged' in day-to-day life I suppose.

Kadath 11-04-2005 04:25 AM

I was worried I'd think too much and screw it up, but I pulled the 100% in all categories too. The rules of English are comforting to me. It's not a chore for me to follow them, I guess. I do think it's funny that more people in my demographic screw up the section marked "Intermediate" than the "Beginner" section.

maleficent 11-04-2005 04:41 AM

This test is just wrong...

English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 96% Advanced, and 96% Expert!

My grammar/spelling/punctuation are atrocious... there is no way i scored what I scored on this...

cyrnel 11-04-2005 05:07 AM

Yep, another 40/40.

Thier to eazy. Them oght to raze the bare.

You scored higher than 66% on Beginner

You scored higher than 42% on Intermediate

You scored higher than 75% on Advanced

You scored higher than 52% on Expert

Hmmm. 80% expert? I thought I did better than that.

Their is know place four bad grammer in this society.

cyrnel 11-04-2005 05:21 AM

Nonsense, Ben! There's always a place for bad grammer. So long as old gramps is around and still interested in that sort of thing.

Coffee edit.

Eweser 11-04-2005 05:24 AM

English Genius
You scored 85% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 80% Expert!

Kinda scares me that I did better on Intermediate and Advanced than I did on Beginner. :hmm:

shesus 11-04-2005 05:25 AM

English has been a weak area for me since I was educated in WV by people who had horrible grammar. I'm basically self-taught. I looked at the key and I'm not sure why my score was low because I only saw a few that I missed in the expert section only. Oh well, either it's too early or the program was messed up. Whatever, I know that I'm a good writer. I had to be since all my Master's assignment were written and I graduated with a 4.0. BTW, can you tell I don't take criticism well and get very defensive.

Advanced
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 73% Expert!

You scored higher than 66% on Beginner
You scored higher than 42% on Intermediate
You scored higher than 43% on Advanced
You scored higher than 35% on Expert

shakran 11-04-2005 05:33 AM

I'm obviously better at english than math, because I got 100% on everything, but, for example, only scored higher than 83% of the people on expert. I don't see how that's possible ;)

Bill O'Rights 11-04-2005 05:50 AM

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 86% Expert!

You scored higher than 54% on Beginner
You scored higher than 38% on Intermediate
You scored higher than 64% on Advanced
You scored higher than 62% on Expert

From what I can tell, from the answer key, I missed one. The one with "a while", "awhile" and "for awhile".

lurkette 11-04-2005 05:51 AM

40/40. w00t! I am a huge nitpicker when it comes to things like this. People's improper use of "it's" vs. "its" makes my teeth hurt. Not like it matters much in a world where text messaging is becoming the norm, but it's good to know that my vast store of useless knowledge is still intact.

Siege 11-04-2005 06:25 AM

Seems everyone is getting perfect here.

Hmm. Either we're all geniuses, or the test is just too darn easy :)

ngdawg 11-04-2005 06:42 AM

Way too easy!
English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 100% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!
Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

You scored higher than 55% on Beginner

You scored higher than 39% on Intermediate

You scored higher than 96% on Expert

English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 86% Expert!

Yeah, I guess we're all brilliant! You know why... people who can't tell the difference don't care enough to take the test. :p

MooseMan3000 11-04-2005 07:26 AM

English Genius, here. I took it a while ago and got two or three wrong, and that's because I was putting all the possible answers, not all the best answers. As in the "speeding is *blank*" question, I answered both risky and risque, because both answers are grammatically correct. I suppose I should have known better than that.

I don't, however, believe the test is too easy. The title is "The Commonly Confused Words Test." Most of those words are confusing for the average person. Does it surprise you that in a community where literacy is a prerequisite for participation that we score well? I think it's a sign that the TFP rules, not that the test is too easy.

I only scored Advanced.

Not too shabby. I missed #33 I was leaning towards D, but ended up picking C. I had myself convinced that 'awhile' isn't a word. :p

English as a Second languager here:

Inter-Advanced
You scored 71% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 86% Advanced, and 73% Expert!
You have a good understanding of intermediate and advanced commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of the intermediate and advanced level questions correct. The puzzling part of your test result is the fact that you only answered 75% or less correct in the beginner section. Fascinating.

Not bad for a frenchman, who is always learning, especially considering that this convoluted language of English is the hardest to learn. Or so they say.

Its interesting reading the bits you got wrong; my problem seems to be my punctuation and things like that rather than confusing words. I learned something new today: how to use a colon correctly. Wish they still taught grammer, spelling and punctuation at school, best we ever got was in French Writing when the teacher had to go over basic English to make up for us not learning it in English!

It would be nice if there was a cheat sheet or something similar that contained commonly misused rules.

, which - refers to the whole group
, that - refers to a subgroup
eg: The windows were all open. The windows, that were open, were shut at 4pm.

didn't know that that was a subgroup till 2 weeks ago... I feel ashamed.

people take online grammar on a forum like this way to seriously! (waits to get banned for spelling a word incorrectly!!) Most times I am reading and typing a reply while doing 50 million other things at the same time, mistakes like the war in iraq are bound to happen. Plus when I was in grade 3 I remember a teacher calling home to tell my mother I had failed a spelling test and that I may have Dyslexia. My mother handled the situation by transferring me out of that teachers class instead of getting me tested (which i found out i am Dyslexic years later) I am grammatically challenged and love it.

this thread reminds me of the "awkwardly high" SAT scores everyone seemed to be posting ;) I didn't do as well as everyone else it seems. I know for a fact I can write "better than average." I guess my vocabulary isn't as top notch as all the super-geniuses here at the TFP :)
