How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
This deserves its own thread.
For those too young to have seen the 1970 commercial, click this link. I propose an experiment. I want to plot how long/how many licks it took to get to the center of a normal (not mini) Tootsie Pop. Time/licks, and if you gave up and crunched, after how long/how many licks did you do it? It might also be useful to find out what else you were doing when you performed the experiment. No licking machines allowed! Yes, apparently some engineering students have built licking machines to try this experiment out mechanically, but I feel that they miss the point. Now I have to go out and buy a bag of the things. |
I don't have the patience to do this
now if we could count how many licks it took to... oh nevermind I'll stop the hijack right here and now :p |
I was born in 1982, but remember the comercial. *CRUNCH!*
|
A one, a two, a three... Three licks to get to the centre!
I'd have kicked that smart ass owl's ass... |
I doubt there's any human patient enough to see it through.
Perhaps a Zen buddhist monk. or a team of them. |
I don't know, but I would pay good money to watch some of the ladies of TFP try this test out.
I propose a contest with Nancy, Shani, Onodrim, Sheesus, Gilda, Sweetpea and any other girls who wish to join in. Yeah, I would pay to see that. |
I did actually do it once as a child. But, I have memory of what # I actually came up with.

Word. |
53 licks and 2 bites.
|
Whoa, multiple bites?? That must've been back in the days before they shrunk the things.
|
I am willing to partake in this experiment as long as you provide me the equipment (the tootsie pop) and pay for the dentist bill should my teeth ache. Deal? :D
|
I throw it under a train and then lick up the remains....
mmmm.... tastes like varmint.... ughughuhguhguhg.... |
I'm not sure how well these things would mail. Might get "crunched" before you even see it. I'd have to send several. Well padded. I'm picturing a meter-cubed box filled with styrofoam peanuts and with three or four Tootsie Pops wedged in there somewhere. I expect they'd arrive crushed. :D
|
I hate those things. Maybe because I don't eat candy.
|
I couldn't participate in this, because the entire thing would drive me crazy. I suck lollipops ie. suckers...
BTW, I remember the commercial, it was still around in the early 80's when I was young. |
My lack of patience has never allowed me to merely lick and/or suck to the center, however, I do believe the multitudes of TootsiePops I have consumed have given me sufficient practice for other oral endeavors. And I SOOOOO miss the lemon ones....
|
I got to about 500 once as a kid, and then my mom made me throw the thing out because she was tired of seeing me licking the dang thing. I've got a big ass tongue.
|
I say it would depend on the surface area of the tounge in contact with the corresponding spherical surface area of the pop, in addition to the volume of saliva coating on the tounge per lick.
i.e. A larger, wetter tounge would get the job done quicker. Anybody know what Scooby-Doo's doing these days? :) |

(wait's for an owl-like asskicking :D ) |
I'm still sampling as often as I can. I always have a dozen or so in the glove compartment of the car. With all my kids and neices an nephews, they are indispensable for those times I need ten minutes of quiet in the car. Also, if you ask the kids to count, you can add on an extra ten minutes to quiet time.
|
Why lick when you can bite it?? LOL!
|
If your woman asks you that one, run.
