no sex without procreation, is the idea here, I think

This is the "religion" I was "raised" in - whatever those words mean.
So, I feel I have a responsibility to point out its foibles.
Here's one.
It's blatantly sex-negative.

No plans for kids? The church won't marry you

Paris - A French couple has been refused a religious wedding ceremony by the Catholic church because they said they did not want to have children, Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper reported on Sunday.

The pair - named only as Anne and Christophe - told the parish priest in Saint-Remi de Forbach in northeastern France that they were afraid of passing on a nervous disorder from which Anne suffered.

"However, it was not a genetic illness. It posed a real problem because what they said is incompatible with canon law," said Philippe Hiegel, spokesperson for the Metz diocese.

In the Catholic marriage ceremony bride and groom must declare that they intend to have children and that they accept the "responsibility of spouse and parent," church officials told the paper.

"The priest had no choice but to refuse. If the marriage was ever disputed in a church court it would be declared void," said Jean-Marie Stock, the diocesan vicar-general.

Church officials explained that the marriage service can be offered to couples who cannot have children, or who want to delay having them, but an outright refusal to have children is a disqualification.
........................................................

moral of the story: you fuck, you gotta wanna have kids.

it's simple...simply stupid

"Church officials explained that the marriage service can be offered to couples who cannot have children"

i think churches extreme negativity when it comes to anything sexual is detrimental to many peoples lives... they go through life thinking its all bad and terrible... and then when the time finally comes its boring and mechanical and just done to make babies...

Catholics totally give Christians a bad name. I can't wait until their whole system is torn down.

Same outcome - getting your tubes tied is also against the Catholic faith as are all "unnatural" forms of birth control. The reason for all this is that it's the Catholic view that the primary purpose of sex is the propagation of the species and the expression of deep love. The distant secondary purpose is pleasure between two loving couples. Not saying it's right or wrong, just explaining the "why."

I'd argue that ultra-fundamentalist Christians do worse, but that's just my opinion.

But the French Catholic church NEEDS a steady supply of disabled people - who will ring the bells at Notre Dame Cathedral if they don't?

Wow, and I thought that the church was trying to modernize.

In some areas pertaining to theology, no, but in other areas, sure.

For example, the fact priests in the Roman Catholic faith can't get married is not a theological matter. That is to say, it is not a religious belief that it is *wrong* for priests to marry, it is just the way in which the Roman Catholic Church conducts its business.

I make the distinction of Roman Catholic priests CAN get married in some other Catholic Churches. In fact, most aren't aware that there are actually 22 different Catholic Churches which differ in various non-theological ways, but share the same theology. For example, Armenian Catholics.

So, in these non-theological areas - marriage of priests not being one of them - the Roman Catholic Church is "modernizing." This involves things such as what type of music is used in services, the order of parts of the service, how the church staff interacts with parishoners, etc.

However, the belief that the primary purpose of sex is for contraception comes from the theological interpretation of the Bible - just as the belief against abortion does - and, therefore, no amount of "modernization" will ever change that.

The Catholic church believes that sex should be done only in a procreative and unitive environment. If these people want a church ceromony, they need to switch to protestantism or something. You can change religions, but you cant change a religion.

What a big man stepping up to the plate and doing... what everyone else has been doing all over the place for years and defaming the Roman Catholic Church. Big deal. Really, show someone you got balls and go to Iraq and bash Islam.

If you do not like being Catholic then you do not have to practice it. It is simple, and you are simply stupid for not understanding it.
