spontaneous surgical combustion?
since we don't have an explanation for why this happened, this is a good opportunity to guess...
um, oxygen and a spark? SHC? ........................................................ Man badly burnt on operating table 01jun03 A MAN is recovering in Brisbane's Prince Charles Hospital after sustaining third degree burns while undergoing heart transplant surgery. The man received burns to his back and head when the operating table caught fire during the operation last week, hospital spokesman Grant Cameron said today. Doctors successfully completed the surgery, Mr Cameron said. He said the circumstances leading to the fire were complex and unusual and an investigation was underway. Opposition health spokeswoman Fiona Simpson called on Health Minister Wendy Edmond to give a full explanation as to how the operating table caught fire. "Prince Charles has a very good reputation with heart surgery. It's a very well-regarded hospital," Ms Simpson said. "But this would seem to be quite a bizarre and worrying incident. "I think that the Health Minister needs to reveal exactly what happened. "You've just got to bring it out in the open, deal with it and ensure that it can't happen again." Ms Simpson said only a full explanation into the incident would allay the fears of people who relied on the health system for critical care. Comment is being sought from the Health Department. .......... a really hot nurse? what's your guess?

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. if there was any pure oxygen leaking and there was the slightest spark, it would start a fire. It's just scary to think that something like this can happen.

Electrocautery is used extensively in almost all surgical procedures. Care is taken to ground the patient. But if there was a high concetration of O2, fire is possible. I don' t know if inhaled anesthetics are flammable, but there certainly is flammable gas in the GI tract.

Boy, you people are awfully analytical.
I say spontaneous human combustion strikes again. It would be kinda neat. Think about it, the world of the unexplained strikes a hospital room full of men and women of science. There's a movie here, I just know it. |

The O2 and spark theory sounds like a good probable cause.

They're lying. It's obvious that it was another case of spontanious self-combustion.
They're trying to keep it secret, just like China and SARS.
