I used to *want* to be an actress... I still love acting and will do it when I can, but I hate the !@$!@#@! business of it. Soooo....

I'm the Immigration Coordinator for a swanky ortho hospital on the east coast. We have a big research division, and we want the best... and the best aren't always American. So they need visas. Voila! Job!

At night, I'm taking prereqs so I can go to a Master's Physician Assistant program. The first BA was Theater and Spanish... so clearly I have a few to take. I figured if I can't be rich, I may as well be useful. I want to work in an ER.

On the prison CO's... my mom used to teach at several min and med security prisions. Ah, grown men who don't know the alphabet. *sigh*

I've got a BA in sociology and study for an MA in national security. I'm a manager for a mostly online ad agency. I coordinate projects, supervise them being put together, and listen to crap from my bosses and customers every time someone fails to communicate. Sigh. It's a great job, but sometimes very taxing.

Im a technical designer.....I design partitions (the seperators inside a box) for a packaging company. Im the only female in my division...very cool perk lol another cool perk is that we get to keep the samples companies send us to design for.

did I mention I design for just about every major (and some not so major) alcohol company in the US? Liquor companies, beer companies, wineries....you name them, I probably work with them.

I am a Loan Officer for a local Mortgage Company. If you live in Wisconsin or Michigan I would love to help you with that refinance, construction or purchase. Can you tell that I am a salesman? I love the people I work with, and I love helping people out, which I get to do everyday. There is nothing like pulling someone out of debt, and making them feel whole again.

I also get my own business cards, (I consider this a great thing seeing as I used to work in nothing but factory jobs before this...third shift) and I get to be on the TFP anytime I want to at work. Life is good.

I'm a respiratory therapist. Or...as our state licensure says- a Respiratory Care Practioner. It's pretty cool. I work weekend nights at a small hospital and spend the majority of my time playing video games and reading. Of course, flirting with cute nurses is a plus.

Well, I've been a receptionist in a doctor's office, worked at a bakery, worked as an after care supervisor, worked at a music camp as music director and counselor, worked at a restaurant waiting tables, and worked as a teller at a bank, I got paid to be in a show once but most of my stage work has been "volunteer." And been a student through all of that.

Currently I'm unemployed and looking, unless you count the fact that the bank will take me back over Chirstmas Break if I'm in town then.

Hopefully I'll have one of those "real" jobs in a year once school is over. But for me that would be playing the lead role in a major theatre, so we'll see.

By day I'm a technical editor/database manager/technical document producer/systems integration analyst. Heh, writing all that out makes me want a raise!
So I edit technical documentation for one of the largest defense contractors in the world for one of the oldest still-working aircraft in the US fleet (U-2, the Dragonlady). I help get the books out to the field, I make sure the database is doing all that it should (which is a lot), and make different software programs work together properly to make it all happen. It's not as creative as working for magazines and whatnot (which I've done in the past), but it's a great steady job for a great company, and I like the key people I work with. We're a little overworked and things rarely come together like they should, but we make it happen.

By night (and on weekends) I'm a professional belly dancer. I've been studying Middle Eastern dance for over 10 years, and in a few days will be leaving on a trip to Egypt, where among other more touristy things I'll be studying with some of the best master teachers of this art form in the world!

*hyperventilates with excitement, passes out*

Software engineer for a large computer company. My manager also told me I'm the team lead responsible for a team of four other guys. The last year has been a mad scramble managing to work on three different projects all somewhat related to high performance computing (formerly known as supercomputers) . Over the past year I have been involved in software design, testing the software, fixing bugs, customer support, training the other guys about new software, working with another team in our research division to move a piece of software from research to development, keep my manager aware of what in the world is going on, working with tech writers, and co-ordinating all kinds of nonsense with the project management teams. Oh, once in a while I actually get to write some software too.

I'm a land surveyor tech/net admin at a small surveying company in Colorado. The tech part at the end pretty much means that I can survey stuff, I just don't have the licensure to make it legal, so my bosses do that

I started at the firm in April, and learned throughout the summer... now I'm the residing master of our GPS equipment, and I've learned a good deal of how the surveying system works and how to legally describe land...

It's been a great college job, though the aforementioned bosses need to work out a schedule for me already, as I've been "on break" since I started my freshman year at CSM (and no, I don't have any idea wtf I wanna do yet. Just not petroleum engineering, pleaaaaseee).

I don't think it's people trying make their jobs sound so important. Maybe just a little pride in what they do is coming through in their descriptions. I can't speak for everyone who has posted here, but I can speak for myself. The pay isn't great for my job, and I'll never get the recognition I believe is deserved in my field, but I enjoy my job. Unlike other jobs I have had in the past, I feel like I am contributing something, and doing something that a lot of people either are not able, or not willing to do.

Hearing what people do for a living adds a little insight as to who we all are, and I thought it was a great idea for a thread.

Basically, I'm a social worker with families who have a child living with a life-threatening illness via pediatric palliative and hospice care. I love what I do. I can't stand the "superiors" I do it for.

I would agree that it is probably just pride in there jobs. But on the other hand, sometimes....for example in a thread about credit cards and there use, i bet that there were 50 posts, and 45 out of those 50 people had no credit card debit or paid it off immediately. Made me wonder how credit card companies stay in business with so many people paying the off.

Technically, I'm a "Nutrition Clerk", but it's just a glorified term for shelf stocker - I work for a Kroger company. I hate it, but the health care benefits are good, which is the main reason I stay there. I'm going back to school in January if things work out (woot!) so I can leave the retail biz behind.

I work for Kroger as well, I started out as a bagger working during school, worked my way up to cashier then onto the grocery crew stocking shelves etc. Did that for a couple years after high school then made my way onto the night stock crew as an Asst. Head Grocery clerk (backup for you Kroger people who know the lingo). Did that for a few years but got sick of working nights and the fact that just about everyone who worked on the stock crew was a castoff from society and just got on my last nerve, so I stepped down and started running the dock which I still do now. I basically yell and bitch at everyone who comes back and leaves a pallet in the middle of the floor or fills the cardboard baler up but does not think they should have to empty it, but my job duties include checking in all the beer, wine, bread, chips, pop (or soda depending on where you live). Been there 12 years total.

Looking at getting a new job currently though with a friend of mine who I actually met at Kroger we both started a few weeks apart. He is trying to get me a job at the local newspaper with him running the printing presses, it too, like Kroger, is a union job, but the pay scale is soooooooo much more, benefits are similar, really good perks too and I know everyone who works there since I have been playing softball with them the last 5 years or so.

Who knows...maybe you're right. But, I operate on the premise that folks are telling the truth, unless proven otherwise. Now, at work I use the exact opposite approach.... When I am dealing with convicts I can tell when they're lying, and that's when their mouths are open.

I don't think this is that deep of a thread though.... so I am not really concerned if anybody inflates their own description of what they do. IMO it's just a light hearted thread meant to give people a chance to blow their own horns a little I guess, not a thread where we have to wonder if people are telling the truth or not. It really doesn't matter what we do, but it's still interesting to hear.
