Bathroom Talk

All right, this requires some back story. I was at lunch today with a few of my friends and I had to go to the bathroom, so I went into the public restroom nearby. When I got inside I heard someone talking, but I kind of wrote it off because I thought they were talking to someone. Eventually I figured out that they were on a cell phone. Now, the idea of talking to someone on the phone while either of us is going to the bathroom kind of disgusts me. So when I got back to my group of friends (all guys, I was the only female) I mentioned the girl on the cell phone in the bathroom, who, from the conversation, I figured was talking to her boyfriend. They were not nearly as disturbed by the thought of it as I was. Is this some kind of gender thing or am I perhaps a bit too sensitive about the whole thing?

I don't see the problem with it either, but I don't think it has anything to do with gender. It can't be any worse than folks with all their books/magazines in the bathroom so they can do a little reading while on the throne.

Me personally? Bathrooms are for one thing and one thing only....takin care of business and hygeine. That's it. If I wanna read, talk on the phone, or watch TV, there are other rooms in the house for that. But that's just me.

Make sense?

texxasco 09-07-2005 02:50 PM

I wouldn't be suprised if this thread doesn't stay open long..... On to better things.....

Redjake 09-07-2005 02:55 PM

I know what you mean, Mugzy6. I am seriously disturbed/disgusted by the thought as well. It's really gross and no one should do it. If I found out someone that was talking to me on the phone was dropping a load or taking a leak I would hang up. Gross.

I'm not sure why you think this won't stay open, so far there is nothing wrong with it.

I agree with you Mugzy6, I've always been very annoyed by cell phones in the bathroom. Like you I feel that the bathroom should really only have one purpose, and it doens't include social time. *shrug*

maleficent 09-07-2005 03:06 PM

I spend a lot of time in airports, and I can't tell you how many times I've heard women in neighboring stalls on their cell phones while doing their business including flushing and dont think that theres anything wrong with it - and they clearly don't have thier party on mute because they are doing the talking.

That would defintely rate higher that people who eat while talking on the phone... Nothing is that important that it can't wait til you wipe, flush, wash your hands and exit... If the call was so important, why'd you go pee tobegin with...

Grasshopper Green 09-07-2005 03:21 PM

I've never understood this phenomenon. I don't even like talking to someone who is in there with me...it's just a place to do your business and leave. Especially public restrooms...

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader wouldn't exist if people weren't expected to read whilst in the can... Reading is a solitary activity, and is OK - -talking in the phone... is not... :)

ryfo 09-07-2005 03:30 PM

Sometimes I can tell if the other person is in the bathroom..it kinda sounds tinny and echoy. It does make me feel weird that I may be talking to someone who is sitting dong other business!

Martian 09-07-2005 03:41 PM

Bathroom activities, with the exception of baths and showers, are one person deals.

Just because you can talk on the phone in the bathroom, doesn't mean you should.

Sometimes I think we ought to go back to the old corded-phone-in-the-kitchen. I have a cel phone and it's useful to an extent, but I don't feel obligated to talk on it all the freakin time, like some people do.

Jinn 09-07-2005 03:49 PM

I draw the line between peeing and pooping. I think peeing (standing up) I'm really not in any posture or position that I wouldn't be if I were just standing there. Pooping, however.. thats a little wierd to me but I must admit I did it. I waited until we finished the call before I flushed though..

Antiquated ettiquette in our society that moves oh-so-fast now.. that's what I figure, anyhow...

Sugar&Spice 09-07-2005 03:54 PM

I hate hearing people talk on their cell phones while I am in a public restroom. I wouldn't talk on my phone in a public restroom because no one wants to sit there and listen to my conversation. They don't have a choice to get away from it as quickly as if they were out walking in a store. Plus, it just doesn't seem proper public bathroom etiquette. I will admit however, I have been on the phone at home and had to go to the bathroom really bad!! So when that happens I will go and just flush later.

lukethebandgeek 09-07-2005 04:00 PM

If I'm doing what needs to be done in a stall, and I hear someone on a cell phone, I make it perrogative to make as many grunting noises as possible. I don't want to hear them talk on the phone, the don't want to hear me work for it.

cyrnel 09-07-2005 04:02 PM

I find it a bit distracting to hear "ooh"'s, "ah's", "urrrrgh!"s or flushing noises. I prefer to converse sans images of the other party doing business with their junk. Building memories, ya'know.

Psycho Dad 09-07-2005 04:25 PM

I guess it doesn't bother me. While I don't use the downtime during bowel elimination as an opportunity to make a call myself, I guess I wouldn't have a problem with someone calling me from there. As I mentioned in the "eating in the restroom" thread, I've seen worse.

JumpinJesus 09-07-2005 04:47 PM

I don't think I'd appreciate it if someone thought to call me whilst in the bathroom. To me it smacks of disrespect and a complete lack of social couth. The cell phone has somehow created in us the idea that any time, any place, any situation is appropriate to say loudly, "Where you at??" "Really??" "Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah"

*Flush*

"blah blah blah blah blah blah."

eMOTIONal20 09-07-2005 04:59 PM

I've never done this in a public bathroom...

Buuut uhh... yeah... I've done it at home. I'll be on the phone with someone, have to pee really bad... so I'm just like, "Hey I'm gonna pee... just keep talking."

They'd probably hear me peeing anyway even if they were in my home and the bathroom door was closed.

Pooping, on the other hand, I'd probably be like, "Hey I gotta poop. I'll call you back in a few minutes." Actually... maybe I would talk to them while I was pooping... depends on who is on the phone.

For the record, if someone called me while I WAS peeing in a public restroom, I'd still answer it.

*Shrug* Everyone pees. Gosh. :p

...Why....

What could be that important (Other then an actual emergency) that you need to be talking to some person while pissing or otherwise. If I found out some person was doing that to me I'd most likely hang up and let them call back when they are finished.

Then again, I dont even understand why people read while on the can. Does it really take you that long to do your *duty* to have time to read pages of a magazine?

Siege 09-07-2005 06:19 PM

Wow, can't say that this has ever happened to me. Maybe I don't do my business in public washrooms enough.

Well, you could always just answer their questions/comments. It'll drive them nuts.

Q:How are you?
A:Fine, yourself?

Q:What're you up to?
A:Probably the same as you.

Q:Can we meet later?
A:Sure, after we finish our business

And so on so forth.

Gary_the_Rat 09-07-2005 07:28 PM

Sometimes it's necessary (there's a pun there somewhere). I can only remember doing this once.

Gilda 09-07-2005 07:33 PM

Huh. When I'm talking on the phone, that's all I'm doing, other than maybe taking notes. It just seems to me that if this call is important enough to take, then it's important enough to require my full attention.

I don't know if I've every talked to someone who was on the toilet, but I think I'd find that vaguely unsettling.

Gilda

mo42 09-07-2005 07:40 PM

It seems really odd to me to be on a cell phone while taking a dump. There's something about going to the bathroom that suggests to me a lack of communication. I feel like bathrooms should be quiet places, like libraries.

StanT 09-07-2005 07:48 PM

No way

I own a phone for my own convenience, If I need to use the washroom, it's not convenient. Nothing is so important that it can't wait a couple of minutes.

MSD 09-07-2005 07:49 PM

I hate cell phones in there, although I do carry around a Game Boy in case I ever have to take a shit.

Jeeez, does it really take that long for people? I mean, I thought it was only in the movies when people brought in newspapers and books

Anexkahn 09-07-2005 10:01 PM

I'll often take telemarketers into the restroom on my cordless. I usually dont need to use the facilities either, but it does make for some interesting reactions to toss in some grunting and a flush or two during their salespitch before i turn them down and hang up.

SecretMethod70 09-07-2005 10:42 PM

Public restrooms = definite no.

I don't have a problem with someone talking on the phone while using the bathroom in their own home though. Of course, it depends on who they're talking to. If onodrim is on the phone with me, for example, I don't really care if she goes to the bathroom while we talk. Public bathrooms though....no way. Not so much because of the two people having the conversation but because it's rude to the other people using the public bathroom.

I should have made this distinction in my original post - in your own private bathroom, do whatever you want. But in a public place you really have to think of other people and such.

Well I should have made the distinction as well. I still think that the bathroom is for takin care of business and hygeine....the business on the phone can wait, as well that great article in Popular Mechanics that you have wanted to read.

As for talking on the phone while in a public restroom.... the same rules apply, and for even more reason...you now have an audience.

Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, and I am sure there will be times when you will feel compelled to take that call, or finish that call while in the bathroom / restroom. For me though it hasn't happened yet. Others can be put on hold, or called back. Mother nature doesn't take being put on hold too well though...so when she calls I answer, and catch up to the others later.

To each his own though...

Here's a thought? after someone reads in the bathroom, do you sanitize the reading material afterwards? Once used for bathroom reading material, does it ever regain it's status as reading material that lies on the coffee table or elsewhere in the house?

One more thought? Once you finish with the phone you were using in the bathroom....it the phone sanitized afterwards? Or do you just use it again later on, spreading germs even further?

SecretMethod70 09-08-2005 01:22 AM

If you really want to go there, your hands pick up far more germs than your genitals anyway.

analog 09-08-2005 01:41 AM

Well, two observations:

1. I have never seen or heard a man do this.
2. Men don't invite each other to the bathroom so they can talk while they piss like women do.

Considering many women can't go piss by themselves in person, it makes good sense that many of them would also find it acceptable to do it over the phone. If I had a girlfriend, and she called me from the bathroom, i'd hang up on her right then. That's just weird.

flat5 09-08-2005 02:27 AM

I don't like it and I find it disrepectful for someone eating to call me.
I don't want to listen to them chomping on food!

All you people who do your business quickly are young :-)

Johnny Pyro 09-08-2005 04:55 AM

Uhmm..I talk on a cordless phone when I'm in the bathroom. Who cares!? If you listen close enough, you can hear me pushing. :D

ngdawg 09-08-2005 05:12 AM

My phone has rung while I'm in a restroom and sometimes I will answer, tell them where I'm at, can I call back. At home, I just keep talking.
True story: We were doing a weekend carshow on the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ and we had two-way radios. My kids took one as they wandered the boardwalk and I kept the other. I had to use the restroom and as I'm in my stall, this voice comes over: "Hey, mom? Where are you? Dad wants to know what are we doing for lunch?" "Uh, I'm in the BATHROOM right now, can this wait?" Heard a few snickers....it was a bit embarrassing and next trip to the restroom, I left the radio in the car.

Celina 09-08-2005 05:42 AM

My job rquires me to contact outside venders and sometimes customers via telephone. On more than one occasion I will be talking to one of them while in the background I hear a stream of pee enteriing a toilet or a giant flush while attempting to maintain a professional conversation. It just doesn't work.

JustJess 09-08-2005 06:23 AM

Public bathroom? I will answer, but I don't generally talk. At home? All the time. I'm usually only talking to family anyway. Since it's just Quadro and I anyway, I don't even close the door - the cats like to keep me company while I go (no matter how short the time) so rather than deal with their meowing and scratching... I just let 'em in!
I dunno, it's just sounds. It's not like they have to smell me, should that be an issue and of course it's never an issue. :p

I agree with number 2 but I have heard plenty of men chatting on their cell phones while in the can...

Personally I could care less what someone is doing while they are on the phone with me...

As for reading, anytime I am going to spend some time on the toilet I make sure I have some reading material. It is sometime the only way to get some alone time.

Borla 09-08-2005 12:13 PM

I won't use a cell phone in a public bathroom, but I've used the bathroom at my house if talking to my wife or a close friend or something. Not a big deal to me. :)

BigBen 09-08-2005 12:55 PM

On more than one occasion, halfway through pushing on a serious number 2, the phone rings.

Ben answers: "Hey, I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT YOU!"

I avoid talking on the phone when preoccupied, no matter the reason.
