Buy gas tonight, if you can!
This will sound like a internet rumor, but... my mother-in-law just called to tell me that the mother of a friend of Quadro's brother called her. This friend's mom owns a gas station. She told MIL that gas prices are going up 57 cents tomorrow morning due to the hurricane effects on the off-shore drilling rigs in the Gulf.
I don't know if it's bullshit, but I doubt it, and what's the harm in filling up tonight even if it is? I imagine that if it does go up that much, it will be temporary. I know that it shouldn't affect gas stations this quickly, but that hasn't stopped them from fucking with prices before. So, go buy gas tonight if you're able, just in case. And I thought $2.57/gallon was bad! |
Eek! I hope it's not true...but we filled up last night, so we don't really need any right now....
|
I don't get it. I sat at a stoplight and watched someone change the price from 2.59/g to 2.79. What ever happened to 1-3 cent changes. And when does it stop? If people can make synthetic oil, why can't it or a varient be used as a replacement ? It's so confusing.
|
Quote:
Seen a price comparison between a regular oil change and a synthetic oil change lately? You can get regular for $20. Synthetic is closer to $50. That's $50 for maybe 1 gallon of oil. I kinda don't wanna pay that much ;) |
I heard on the local news last night pretty much the same story, but they said "20-30 cents in the next couple days". I filled up last night thankfully, since gas has already gone up 20 cents here.
|
I'm not expecting it to go up 57 cents (not that I have any idea what it will go to), but I do expect it to go high enough that I can save a few bucks by filling up tonight. It took over a hundred bucks to fill both tanks tonight.
I've only been putting a half tank in at a time for a few weeks now thinking that if it went back down a bit in a few days that I would save a bit. That strategy hasn't worked worth a damn. |
its like 26-30 for synthetic in pa
im sure it varries from state to state store to store but still alot more than crude oil ;) |
I heard 9 cents from my roomate and I live in Alberta (why oh why do we contract out our precious resources).
|
I just got gas. The gas station owner confirmed that yes, he will be raising his prices to $3.00 tonight. We got it at Sunoco for $2.71 99/100, full service. Mobil was $2.85 99/100 already, and Exxon was $2.99 99/100 as well, self service. Mind you, I live in NYC.
But still. If you need any... tonight's your night. |
brb must get gas tonight just incase ahhhhhhhhhhh *runs down the stairs to the car, gets in drives t the gas station. Gets our realizes he has a full tank and adds 0.50 to top it off again and goes home*
but for real i am going to go get it |
Oh, the gas station owner also said he really doubted it would go back down again. But that's just conjecture. Depressing, horrifying, !@#$@#$ conjecture.
|
I haven't filled up since June. Thankfully I don't drive that often. But I'll have to fill up in the next few days, I think.
|
Looks like I'm gonna start walking again real soon...
|
In light of all the devestation, death and loss of homes in the gulf area of the USA, I find the fact that people who are more concerned about spending a few extra bucks to fill up their gas tanks really very pathetic. Especially those "rushing out tonight" to beat the price.
Sick....and ice cold. |
the local news is reporting a 20-30 cent jump by tomorrow. filled up all 3 cars already. cost: $140. gas is at $2.49 right now.
whenever shit like this happens, it just makes me remember how fucking stupid and selfish people in my city are. a majority of the people here dont give a shit. |
oh man! :(
thanks for the tip. This is going to be great for the stock market... not! Sweetpea |

I am sure that the victims of the hurricane will not be too upset if we go out to buy gas tonight before the prices rise that much more. In fact, I am sure that they would do the same thing if it had the rest of us and not them. But none of what I am saying will matter to you or the others that have said things like this in the past few days, because you are going to wait until the prices are sky high so as not to offend those in the devastated areas. Yes, I do feel horrible for those thousands of people trapped in the Superdome with no electricity or running water and the thousands of others affected by this. I have prayed for them everynight since I found out about this (Sunday night). And I have even gone ahead and set up donation areas at my job. But I also want to make sure that I can afford to drive to work tommorow. |
The prices will go up, then strangely, never go back down.
Even when all the stuff is fixed and all this is over, always seem to work out that way. |
I'm pretty sure that the oil that we're getting out of the rigs down in the gulf is just a small portion of the whole, and that this is just a convenient way to transition into what should have been the case months ago.
|
From Sunday to today they went up 6c a gallon-to $2.55. Luckily one station was slow to change yesterday so I got it at 2.49, but only $20 worth-about 3/4 tank. I'm sure it'll go ove $3 by the end of the week.
It may go down a few...it has in the past...but this conjecture on the part of the gas station owners that makes them jack up the price like mad is irritating-it's not done AFTER the oil prices go up-it's done on the anticipation of it. :( |
And the irony of me receiving 12, 55 gallon drums of not for human consumption vegetable oil yesterday......time to start a brewing.
|
Or, drive less, drive a more fuel-efficient car, walk, bike etc......
Nevermind..... |
Driving less is hard if you go to work/school each day.
Drive a more fuel-efficient car? Well if we had enough money to buy a new car.... Walk/Bike not aways an option, bikers get hit by cars quite often (i'm sure it sucks). "sick and cold?", Come off it. This post was intended to help people. We use gas in our cars, and use those cars to go to work etc. Thanks for the advice, I hope gas prices aren't too bad when I return to USA. |
But the worst part of it is, even though I don't drive (I don't even own a car and I live in LA), I will still be affected by this. Transportation, shipping, etc will all be affected.
I think even WalMart is concerned too, how the high price of oil will affect their prices. I also have to work/ go to school, but for the past seven years I've lived in LA ( a notoriously car-obsessed town), I've managed just fine withou a car. Well, yes inconvenienced but I walk/ take bus alot. My roomates bike to school everyday (crazy guys). I just don't like to be all sweaty in lecture. You're in Japan still right? Do you drive a car everyday? If so then well, I don't know, drive less? :) But otherwise, I assume you have to go to work and school everyday somehow (bus? walk? bike?). Besides, small cars get hit by bigger cars everyday too. *shrug* "sick and cold"? Huh? Anyways, hope your diet is working out for you. Cheers..... |
Hehe, 'sick and cold' thats a responce to someone else.
In Japan most people use the public transportation system. It is insanely expensive though. But cars are even more expensive. A 30min drive from the outskirts of hiroshima to the main part of hiroshima cost 20dollars in tolls. There is no "free"way. There are all kinds of bills and taxes and gas is so much more expensive. We should be thankful of what we have in the USA. Now in the states I live to far from my college to walk, and biking is suicide, so I gotta drive. :) |
2 days ago we had half a tank and thought "we should fill this up just in case". That was for 2.49, and it was 2.59 yesterday. Haven't seen what it is today yet...
|
In re: being "sick and ice cold" for posting about rising prices: My intention to give a heads up to other people about the insanely fast rise of gas prices has nothing to do with how I feel about the devastation in the South. It has everything to do with dealing with the practicalities of living day to day in a commuting society. Assumptions like that make an ass out of you and umption. Thanks to those who interpreted the intent more clearly.
So far, what I've seen this morning (in the NE, NYC), has been increases of about 15-20 cents in many stations, and up to the threatened 57 cents in, oh, maybe 25% of those I saw. Gulf and bp (by Amoco) were in the 15-20 cent range, while Getty, Exxon, and Mobil were in the 50-57 cent range. The best case scenario that I can see happening is that once things are re-settled a bit down South - power back on, oil rigs working again, etc. - is a drop of no more than 10 cents. But I have no scientific basis on which to hypothesize that. |
my car runs on garbage... the the dolorean of the future.
Thanks doc brown! |
It's up at $1.30 AUD a liter here. That's, uhm, $5AUD per gallon, so $3.74US. And it ain't going down. Us aussies have like the world's second most expensive fuel, or something.
|

Yes, I suppose we could just huddle around our TVs and cry and moan about the devestation but guess what? Life does go on. The fact that a hurricane destroyed many people's lives doesn't change the fact that I have to get up this morning and go to work. You are being uneccsarily harsh in you criticism. |
Quote:
I haven't been out of the house yet this morning, but I fully expect prices to be toward $3.00 this morning. Fortunately, we just filled both cars in the last couple days. |
Filled up last night, plus got an extra 20 gallons at 2.51 per.
Call me "sick and cold". |

Here in rural Illinois, gas is about $3/gal right now, and expected to go to $3.25 today, and possibly over $4/gal within the week.
|
Quote:
That area of the country gets slammed with hurricanes year after year after year... sometimes multiple times in a single year alone, yet people STILL choose to live there. You play with fire, you're gonna get burned. I mean it sucks and everything, but it WAS expected. Meanwhile, gas soars, people don't question why... I'm honestly more concerned about that right now. |
Quote:
Not really. Gas is forecasted to rise to $4.00 and up per gallon. That's more than double what it was this time last year. The country's economy can't sustain that - I know my employer won't up my salary to compensate and I'm pretty sure yours won't either. If that keeps up too long it could have HUGE impacts on the economy - It could fling us into a depression, which will bring misery to the whole country, and also more misery to those in NO as money to rescue and rebuild is no longer available. |
I can second this my uncle works for one of the big oil company's and they can't get the pumps back online to pump crude oil up the east coast to the refineries so the prices are going to sky rocket and some places will run out of gas
|
Thank you for posting this thread, it certainly helped me out! I filled up my tank last night when I saw this, and sure enough this morning gas prices went up about $0.20, so I'm really glad I went last night after all.

Dow, NASDAQ and S&P 500 all closed up. |
oh good lord, I just got home from work....I did not pass one gas station that was not completely full and a line waiting...clogging up the roads...to get in to the parking lot....2.89 is the cheapest I see...most are 2.99
|
Filled up this morning for $2.72. The station down the street was already at $3, and the station I was at was getting ready to up their price too. Ugh.
|
$3.26 when I just bought it. Fucking ridiculous.
|
Why didnt i see this thread yesterday. I was thinking of pumping yesterday at $2.64 but decided to do it today before school, to my surprise now $2.98. I even saw in the news some of Illinois is it $3.69.
|
Gas is currently 2.79 here on average, and is as low as 2.69 still.
|
I love dependency.
Makes communism look kinda nice, doesn't it? Okay, I was really just kidding there. Please don't take that seriously. We don't want another "You guys are all assholes, sick and cold, go to hell" type post because of what I joke about. |
Was 1.20/L this morning but is back down to 1.03 this afternoon... This just underscores for me that what was going on was gouging.
Let's face it. I can handle the price going up because of the disaster. It makes sense. BUT... The gas they have in the pumps right now was purchased at a lower rate. They are just taking advantage of a bad situation... that *is* sick and cold. |
$3.19/gal in Indiana, Wednesday night...
|
It went up $.46/gal overnight here. From $2.749 to $3.209. I filled up yesterday at $2.749...yay me!
|
It's only up .10 here in Corvallis. I'm really surprised. It's up to 2.67 (highest all summer) after hitting 2.63 two weeks ago and dropping to 2.57 early last week. I thought for sure the price would have jumped more by now. But then we are close to all the West Coast refineries :)
|
nothing to say
|
Just bought some at 2.69. Actually, we bought it for 2.79 because I couldn't find the 2.69 pump and people were honking.
It is nice living blocks away from the cheapest station in town. |
Supposedly in Georgia. Fucking A!!
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/4267/capt4la.jpg Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitly fill it up tonight. |
Quote:
It just seems a bit odd that every gas station in town has a different price and it seems to be changing at random times during the day. I know a few months after 9/11 about a dozen different gas stations around here got into some trouble for price gouging, so, this little flare up doesn't surprise me one bit. |
Quote:
Not even 12 hours later, its up to 3 allready....... Blah. |
Not much impact here in California, up roughly 5-8 cents since Saturday. But, as someone else alluded to, we have the west coast refineries close by.
I read an article which stated that Internet rumors have helped fuel the run on gas in the south, such as a rumor about State Troopers closing all gas stations at a certain time. I think the lines only help drive up the crazy demand and are actually inflating the prices more than the should be. EDIT: I guess I didn't pay as much attention today to this prices, I checked one of the gas price websites, and the average here in Orange County is up to $2.88, from $2.81 yesterday and $2.75 last week. The national average is $2.86, and I can tell you that I can not remember the national average being even within 30 cents of the California averages. With the heavier California gas taxes and generally higher cost for the cleaner gasolines we use here, you can say California now may have some of the cheapest gas in the country. Little consolation though, in light of the events of the last few days. |
i've only used up a quarter tank but it looks like i should buy gas tomorrow. i had no reason to today, and instead of driving to the local college here, i ran and it took me 10 minutes :-D
|
Quote:
|
I am in Salt Lake City and just filled up the night of the hurricane @ 2.39/gal. I have only used about a quarter tank in my Pont Sunfire since then and refueled tonight @ 2.69/gal. So it has shot up about 30 cents here in just 3 days. I was hoping we would see gas here drop down to about 2.00/gal sometime in the future because it was slowly dropping, but now who knows if we will see the 2.50/gal price again.
|
I just got a full tank the other day. Reg. Unleaded at my BP near me was $2.59/gal. So I won't need to worry for a bit. <3 my Corolla.
|

You're right. It is sick and cold. It's not like there are better things to do with the saved money....like, oh, I don't know, donate to help thousands of people recover from a terrible disaster. It's much better to spend the money on gas instead. Anyway, I saw it at 2.99 last night and the station was PACKED with people filling up. |
Quote:
Gas here shot up $0.30, to $3/gallon in the last 2 days. All reports point towards that going up to $4/gallon. That's a total difference, just because of this event, of $1.30. THAT'S INSANE. Also, the difference in price means that, with the extra $1.30/gallon, it will cost an additional $15.21. That is a lot of extra money that, as SecretMethod70 pointed out, has many, many better uses than going towards gas. So, yeah, I'm pissed gas prices are skyrocketing. I'm also sad that so many people's lives are fuxored. But you know what else? Most gas stations in the area were OUT OF GAS... In central florida, the shortage is so bad that they're expecting to have to suspend school bus service after labor day (the 5th) until the supply of diesel is restored. This will horribly inconvenience everyone with kids- and also those who have to drive around with all those extra cars on the road. This will make for mad drivers, and more drivers, which will increase accidents. They are reporting having to shut down airports because of lack of jet fuel and other fuels needed to run things. By the way... not for nothing, but I searched and didn't see a single post- not one- in all of the very many threads about the tsunamis that hit over in Asia from you. You were active in the forums they were in, but didn't post once in any of the tsunami threads. I'm not saying that because you chose to post in practically all the hurricane threads that you had to post in the tsunami threads... but a shitload more people's lives were ruined and taken away by that disaster than hurricane Katrina. I'm just curious, and I bring it up, since apparently you're calling us all cold and sick. You know, since that's not a nice or fair thing to say, I figured I'd extend my curiosity on your total lack of voice for the tsunami victims and see why you didn't care about that. [my uncle] I'm not sayin' nothin', I'm just sayin'. [/my uncle] |
It is so insane here its not funny. Yesterday was pay day....I get gas on payday...I COULD NOT get into any gas station along the 11 mile drive home....streets were backed up with people waiting to get to the pumps and I was almost on empty. SO many gas stations are now out of gas.
Fortunately the one next to my house had been replinished sometime over nite, so I got to pay 3.19 to fill my tank up. I got over by work and realized I needed to stop and get a Dr Pepper so I pulled into the BP station next to my office.....they were out of gas...the tanker truck was in the parking lot pumping...YAY the station would have gas...BUT people were in the fucking parking lot cussing out the tanker drivers cause it was taking so long....helloooo people, you can only pump that stuff so fast. I grew up in a pipeline family, the two that run thru georgia over to texas are the ones that are down. I believe I heard this morning that one is up and running at 35% and they hope for 50% by the weekend....Im not sure which one though, my daddy worked for one, my grandfather the other one. People...dont yell at the tanker drivers, and you stupid gas stations trying to charge so much (yes some stations here were charging over 5 dollars a gallon yesterday, but they were shut down) stop being so fucking greedy!!!!!! Im scared at the rate drive offs are increasing...those people are going to cause some serious wrecks trying to get away. I know that rant didnt make any sense...but geez Im just shocked at the behaviour of some people edit* I found an article about this stuff here...which talks about both pipelines (my daddy worked for plantation, my grandaddy worked for Colonial) Quote:
|
Arizona had a pipeline crunch two years ago, and it was a mess - but it was an eye opener to just how quickly things can change, and how much a rumor can affect the behavior of the masses.
|
hi there, well i live in australia and i paid $1.28 a litre for petrol or what you all call gas, this time last year i was paying under $1 a litre, so with the change over in currency ect us aussies are paying a lot more than everyone else, it just seems to cost more and more every week!
|
It was hovering around $1.27/L at the highest and .98/L at the lowest here in Toronto this morning...
The pump near my house that was $1.03 last night was back up to $1.25 this morning... Fuckers. |
Huh. The news item in ShaniFaye's post just makes me think I contributed to the panicking! Which I may have... and if I did, I'm sorry. :(
Right now, the range is 2.85 to 3.09/gallon in the stations I've seen here in NYC. I can't believe they'd keep the prices up after the pipelines are functioning again... but I've been surprised before. |
Quote:
|
I just got off the phone with my daddy, and I thought I'd pass what he told me along, to anyone that might be interested.
Pipeline company lesson #1 Whats happening right now is that....the main staging area is in Baton Rouge and Pascagoola (sp?) MS...those staging areas require 6000 to 8000 hp motors to run the pipes. The pipes should not be damages as they lay 12 feet underground, BUT they run up hill from Baton Rouge to Bremen Ga (which is right at the alabama state line). They have no power, there are not many generators that can run a 6k-8k hp motor which is why they are only running a 35%. The line that runs from Bremen GA to Greensboro NC doesnt require power to pump the tanks because gravity does the work for them. On a normal day they will pump around 800,000 barrells per day...each barrell is 42 gallons. Right now if they are running at 35% they are pumping 280,000 barrells which would be 11,760,000 gallons a day. We arent running out of gas....its just taking time to get it here. anyway, I thought that might be interesting to somebody |
Urk, for a temporary price hike, that's insanity. God help you all when the fuel really does start running out, holy crap.
|
Thanks for sharing your info Shanifaye.
I have felt irritated that people could be so greedy. Hubby does have to drive about 30mi one way to work and back each day. I do not drive anywhere for work or even much during the week for groceries. So long as it isn't pouring rain or freezing cold I use my bicycle and bike trailer to take the kids places and even go to the grocery store. I am lucky to live in a smaller town where a leisurely bike across town from one end to the other only takes me about 45 min. We are using as little gas as possible. What irritates me is that the gas stations are somewhat milking the 'threat' to our gas supply by hiking the price much more than is reasonable. I can understand some changes in price but from $2.72 to $3.23 in one night is outright greedy. As for being concerned about those who've been hit by the storm - Complaining that we're more concerned about the money we spend on gas is not hurting them any. If the hike in gas price was to fund relief efforts I would be much more willing to spend the added dollars. For greed - I will do my upmost to avoid giving you any more money than my personal needs dictate. |
It's $3.30 here in Boone, NC. Wee!!!!!
-Lasereth |
Hey! Control yourself there. ;)
Quote:
Charlatan called it right...."fuckers." |
$3.30 about 20 miles south of charlotte in SC, normally oen of the cheapest places i've seen to get gas, but that has changed...tremendously....
sad story, a house burned yesterday as the firetruck coming was blocked by lines for gas stations running into the street...the firetruck was literally stuck while in sight of the burning house... Another sad story: my manager has a dodge durango, not the most efficient car by any means, and lives 45 miles away from work..and shares her car with her bf who drives another 30 miles to his workplace...75 miles for a one way trip to work, so 150 miles per day at an average of 18-20 mpg at $3/gallon.. so roughly $10/day for driving to and from work, which means she is working for roughly an hour pre-tax JUST to pay to come to work that day another funny item: it is now cheaper for me to replace my battery than it is to fill my tank. it is also cheaper for an oil change with synthetic oil that my car uses: mobil 1 full synth is $5.30/quart so an oil change is ~$30 with filter. anyone know what the highest gas price was during the 70's when adjusted for inflation? |
Quote:
I think it's pretty clear, we've made up for that inflation gap now. |
Im sorry to threadjack a little but since I just heard on the news, unless you NEED to buy it now, dont buy gas just to save a dollar or two. I think workers and Gulf residence need it more now than we do.
Looks like Ill be bumming rides for a little bit now. |
