Mothers, Money, and Monkey Business
My mother is so confusing when it comes to money.
She'll complain one day how she's "running out of money." Not 2 days ago she just bought, in cash, a 2005 Infiniti G35. Now, she's not rich, but she's fairly well off. I'd like to think she just wants something to complain about since she doesn't work at all (was left money when my father died). This just confuses me. Why would someone say they're running out of money and act as if they're going through rough times, when in fact, they're not? Wtf? She paid cash for the house she lives in (in a country club community ON A GOLF COURSE no less), and the only things she pays are her bills and a lease on another car of hers that's ending this October. She goes and says to me the other day, "Just quit your crappy PT job, I have money for you." (needless to say I haven't quit...) Just venting a bit. I don't understand her sometimes.

Sue, my dad does this stuff all the time. "Oh, we can't spend any money right now, we don't have any cash," etc. He says this because he wants to hang on to the money he does have in order to make larger purchases like cars, or home improvements, etc. I think he mostly does it to lead my mother to believe we have less money than we do (I've seen the bank balance, I know the truth) so she won't spend it willy-nilly (which she is prone to do).
Is your mother by chance a Taurus?

I'm just guessing on age, but finances get more complex as you reach middle age. I have equity in my home, a 401k, and some investments. I'm certainly not destitute, but most of my money isn't available immediately. On any given day, I could be dead broke and complaining about bills. Changes in taxes, electric rates, etc force me to adjust my budget constantly (and cause some serious whining).

Another thing, and not that this is a huge deal to me, b/c it isn't, but when she got the car, she was like, you can drive it too!
I ask her to take it one day and she's like, you can't drive it, you're not on my insurance!

I was just affirming that being a Taurus has nothing to do with anything...
...but I do apologize for detracting from the original post. ...which had something to do with monkeys, if I remember correctly! I sure hope they were wearing suits. (Please, just ignore me.) |

There are times when my Grandpa is "low" on cash on hand. It's because 98% of his money is stashed in CD's and Mutuals. He can't take the money out until it matures without HUGE prepayment penalties and charges that dwindle the total amount down to nothing at times. He has to plan his vacations around the CD's maturing. When they do he either spends the lot or reinvests it. He's bought 2 new cars in cash, gone on vacation to Alaska, Canada, and Georgia the past three summers. Right now though he's living off of his S.S. check.
Do you know how your mother's money is stashed?? If she has it in investments then its likely that she doesn't literally have any cash on hand and pulling out a CD early sometimes feels like suicide with the fees they charge you.
