Beware of the drunk dialers

When you've had too much to drink and you're missing your ex, suddenly it seems nothing in the world is more important than pulling out the cell, scanning through the phone book and dialing someone, anyone - friends, an ex, even a family member.

"When we're drunk, we lose our inhibitions," says Lisa Daily, author of the dating book "Stop Getting Dumped!"

"Sometimes the drink-and-dial is the only way we can express feelings we've kept inside for a while," she said.

It's a behavior limited to humankind, says Katherine Gould, author of "A Tiger in the Bedroom: Lessons From Mother Nature's Sex Shop." "From my research, I can't find a single creature that gets loopy and goes looking for an ex," Gould says.

The calls may be to tell your ex how much he or she hurt you or to let your current beau know exactly what he or she did wrong or a behavior that perpetually bugs you.

Some people use the drunken dial to call a current crush in hopes it'll turn into something more or an ex to repair broken ties. Not that this reconnecting works, Daily says. As a dating columnist, she's received thousands of letters over the years and not once has she encountered a couple who got back together after a drink-and-dial phone exchange.

Sometimes, though, it's less about affairs of the heart.

"Generally, from a male perspective, calling anyone within cab distance after drinking is to have sex," says Seth Kelly, sections editor with Stuff, a lifestyle magazine for young men. Although, he says, it's not the only motive. "Guys might want to talk to their girlfriends for no good reason at all, to tell them how much they miss them or try to make amends for an egregious error."

In Australia, Virgin Mobile offers a service blocking certain pre-chosen numbers from the danger of the late-night dial. It's 25 cents (or about 20 American cents) per number and blocks them from being dialed until 6 a.m. the following day. Virgin also operates in America, but the feature is not yet available here. It's under consideration, according to Sue D'Agostino, spokeswoman with Virgin Mobile USA.

Scientifically, the same thing that can cause you to get behind the wheel of the car when you shouldn't can cause that late-night phone call. "Once one's blood alcohol level gets much over .05," says Dr. Robert Chapman, who directs drug and alcohol education programs at La Salle University in Philadelphia, "judgment heads south in a big hurry."
the buzz

most of us are guilty of it, the "drink n dial" as they are calling it in the article...

i'm posting this not so much to hear confessions (although funny stories will be appreciated) i'm really looking for TFPs opinion about the service offered by Virgin that is mentioned at the bottom of the article...

blocking some numbers from being called during the middle of the night, do you think it is a good option to have on your phone???

i personally think if you can't control yourself enough not to call your ex when your intoxicated, then you shouldn't take your phone out drinking...
but then, i've never had an ex i still cared about...

what are your views???

Is this a common practice of people to call their ex's when they are drunk?

Ohhh...

Yeah, any night of heavy drinking my friends start out by tearing my phone away from me. I am a completely unrepentant drunk dialer.

And it's not ex's, I call EVERYBODY. (except family, I'm good enough to never do that.)

A few months ago, some friends of ours procured Hillary Duff's cell phone number. We called it, and sure enough, it was her on the message. Unfortunately, she dumped that number. Probably a good idea, but sad for us. And definitely sad for the guy who got her number next. A few months later, I drunk dialed him and proceeded to lecture him on the greatness of guinness for probably 10 minutes. In an Irish accent.

But I did congratulate him for getting Hillary Duff's old number.

While I've drunk dialed a couple of times, it's always to my sister, never to an ex (uh....I really don't have any anyway). I just tend to get really chatty when I'm drunk, and have to share my good humor I guess if this is something you KNOW you do when you're drinking, then it might be a good idea.

Might be a good idea to dismantle the phone before the drinking starts.

Also hide the battery somewhere you will not be able to reach without a hook or coathanger if possible.

Surely if youre drunk you wont be bothered to go to the hassle and it will discourage you to do it!

Yeah I was wondering about that too. I wouldn't know since I stay away from phones.

This is intriguing me... when you are drunk... what makes you say - -Hey, I'll call - what'shisname for.... booty call? to reminisce? declare your undying love?

Why do you call this person? And what's the result usually?

I've done it once or twice a long time ago, and it was only when I was lonely - my friends had headed off to bed with their S.O.s or hookups. I just needed to hear a friendly voice, so I ended up calling an old friend of mine who I used to have feelings for and sat outside and talked for a while. I can easily see how other people in that kind of situation could turn it into a booty call, though - and I've seen people do it quite a lot.

In fact, my girlfriend got drunk-dialed a few months ago by a guy she turned down before we started dating (and we've been dating for quite a while now). She laughed and hung up on him.
