Gift Ideas (of the Scotch variety)
Greetings,
I read up on my Scotch from you wonderful TFP comrades and I remain a bit confused. I mean, I know how I should start out when developing my own tastes for scotch, and that's just fine and dandy. However, there's a problem: I would like to get a bottle of fine scotch for my father. This is a gift for his 60th birthday/25th anniversary/retirement. Yes, all three rolled into one mighty fine shindig. Anyway, the problem I'm having is what the hell kind of scotch should I get for a man who has years of scotch drinking under his belt? My father is a wealthy man (he can put four kids through college), as he was a patent attorney for 3M corporation. He's been drinking scotch as long as I've been alive (a meager 21 years, I know). Anyway, advice on what the hell to get him would be just dandy. When he stayed with me for a visit to college he bought himself a bottle of Dalmore if that helps any of you. Assume he's a seasoned vet when it comes to scotch whisky because.... he is... Observe (his comment after finishing off 2/3 of a bottle (in one sitting) of 60 pound scotch my roommate bought when she went to England), "Some people drive cars all day every day.... This is what I do"

Good point....
Only he doesn't have a favorite as far as I know... and I don't want to ask because that would ruin the surprise. Also, I'm looking for something rare... something abnormal... If I got him the same old it just doesn't seem as neat to me. I'm willing to spend upwards of $150 on a bottle.

There was a lengthy discussion of scotches here:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=85882 you might want to try giving him a smaller bottle of each of the scotch regions that way he(and you) can have a scotch tasting and he can figure out what his favorites are

Buy him a trip to Scotland and include a tour of the all the distilleries... That's the best way.
Barring that... check the thread posted by Mal.

maybe you should get him something doing with scotch that he wont drink in one sitting(im not saying thats wrong) but think about it, your going to spent $150+ on something that he'll appreciate but it will be gone in a few days,
maybe(just a out there suggestion) get him some glassware with some of his favorite brands or something that recgonizes that he got these on his birthday/25th anniversary/retirement them or stuff for a bar area...so barring a dropped glass everytime he uses the glasses or whatever that he will remember that he got them from you.... thats what i would do if i wanted to make it special so maybe custom made glasses and small bottle of nice scotch? thats my suggestions
