Tension at work.
I work with a team of people who perform legal compliance for a bank. When a court order comes in we respond accordingly. Well one of my coworkers who has been out for two weeks on a scheduled vacation, had a number of her closed cases come back with some major problems. Significant portions of the job were never completed, now a number of irate attorneys are coming back contacting the bank. Well now my coworker is expected to be back from her two-week vacation today, and we’re all concerned she’s going to be fired.
About a year ago I was nearly in the same situation, in that I had gone on temporary leave because of a back injury, and upon my return I had trouble keeping up with all my cases. There were no irate attorneys calling fortunately, but I was doing a lot of feet dragging in getting my cases closed and out the door. I can only attest this to all the Vicodin I was on at the time. After the back pain was finally gone I would go back and look at my cases and wonder, “what the hell was I doing?” Well after three months of coaching with a supervisor I was able to get back up to speed and any issues with my workflow were gone. Now my coworker who I’m concerned might get shit-canned had been struggling once before, and was approached for the same close supervision I went under, but she protested the coaching and abandoned it all together. I can understand why, my supervisor’s attitude and approach was terrible. Every day it was, “what did you do wrong now?” Which felt very demeaning and made me feel very unappreciated as an employee. But I put up with it, put my head down and marched through the rough spots and got myself ahead. But my coworker abandoned the coaching all together, and now I see that it is only going to count against her that she hasn’t made any improvements with her quality of work. Now I have to go into work and act like I don’t have any knowledge of what’s been going on. |
you cannot be responsible for any one else's actions. Horse to water type of thing...
it sucks to watch someone else flush their opportunities down the toilet, but you have to worry about you and your own. can you make an opportunity of this? sure can... if you can convince her to actually take the coaching, even from yourself... you can then achieve for youself by helping her. |
I had a long winded post going into great detail about what goes on at work but I've now changed my mind for concerns of my own behalf. How sad it has come to this.

I spent YEARS worrying about everyone else I worked with, and in the end it messed up my quality of life. Sadly, there are times when selfish = healthy. |
You reap what you sow. Your co-worker didn't wat the help - so be it. Not your problem.
