Congrats you guys!!!!!! I remember when Atlanta got them....everyone was so excited, there was crying in the group I was with waiting for the announcment. Then I remember July 1996 ALL I wanted was to get the hell away from the city as far as I could

great, there goes the G8 summit-meeting.
Chirac has always let his mood influence his decisions in a meeting like this, and with already a bit of a strain between him and Blair, and the competition between paris & london, him having to congratulate Blair on winning, doesn't sound good. I guess we'll wait & see? :S Grats to London tho, that much is true

It's only an hour away from my front doo by train. Think I'm going to go to the Olympics. With any luck we might even win some medals.

I will either be living there by then or will be able to visit my wife's best friend who already does...
London, already a zoo, will be incredibly crowded.

close by no cigar
I was personally hoping for paris, but I'm happy with london, since it's only a chunnel ride away from there.
/planning on living in paris/france around that time. How's the facilities for London ? Are they [the city planners] going to have to overhaul a lot of the infrastructure and build and/or renovate a lot of athletic complexes ? I'm presuming they already have the infrastructure in place, since it's already a big city.. cya, will.

Those are great, mal.
I don't really care one way or another where they're held for the most part. The only real advantage to having them in your home country is television coverage is live, which is a pretty minor thing to me.

those pics are well done lol.
I'm also glad it wasnt in NYC, its nuts enough there, and regular business wouldn't get done. olympic sales and food sales sure, but everyone else would have to wake up 10 hours ahead of time to get to work. As someone who lives in NJ really close to NYC i can safely say there's already enough traffic and assholes on the road w/o having to deal with bad drivers from everywhere on the planet. It would also have been a huge neon sign over the city that said "hey terrorists! blow us the fuck up!"

i visited both paris and london a few weeks ago.
All over paris one could tell they were excited and anticipating hosting the olympics in 2012. But in london i saw one or two very small references to the olympics. I wish paris would have won, it doesn't make sense why they didn't. |

I can only imagine how crazy London is going to be when the Olympics hit. Eek. That would be exciting to see though. Maybe by then I'll be living there, haha.

Olympics are not my thing. They were founded by a french aristocrat looking for a new 'religion' to keep the masses distracted because Catholicism had failed to do so and he feared for the system that had given him an advantageous life. I find the pseudoreligious cerominies of lighting the olympic torch and reciting the olympic oath disgusting. I believe corruption in the IOC to be prevalent along with doping of the athletes. Sure I watch some sport including segments of the olympic games but I am not overly keen on them.

Good for London.
I always enjoy watching Wimbeldon when they're showing the surrounding countryside and villages. I can't believe there won't be any baseball or women's softball in the London Olympics.

the olympics started thousands of years ago, and are, as they were back then a way in which sport and friendly games can be used to bring nations (cities back then) closer together. Yes the IOC is corrupt but so what, its sport, its not like they cause wars or anything. In fact I see the olympics as a way to avoid war by letting some patriotic steam off in harmless ways.
If you don't like pseudoreligious ceremonies, then I suppose you will hate and refuse to go to weddings, funerals, recieve gifts on christmas morning, eggs on easter, I can go on but I wont. Doping may be there, but I doubt its widespread with millions of dollars spent on testing. And what ever reason the modern games were set up, they are not a "new religion" any more, they are just a gathering of the worlds best athletes so they can show their stuff to the world.
