Travelers Cheque Cards
{Note: I posted this is the Travel section a few days ago and did not get any responses}
I'm going to be on the road in Europe and the Middle East this summer. I was wondering if anyone has used the Travelers Cheque cards. I was in Europe for a few weeks last May and had some problems finding places that would take my American express credit card. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the travelers cheque cards Any input would be wonderful |
Why don't you call up American Express' customer service and ask them? They would be able to give you the rundown in a lot more detail than TFP. Also, you should PM Malficent. She knows everything about everything, ESPECIALLY traveling. Good luck!

Heh heh heh - I don't know squat about most things.. but thanks... :)
Ihave never used them myself -- because when travelling to Europe and to australia - itwas just easier to use my ATM card - that way I got the daily exchange rate.. made doing expenses when I got home more difficult, but in the long run it was easier. Traveller's checks -- and the card is just a 00's version of a travellers check can be a bit of a pain in the neck, as some smaller establishments -ie that fabulous cheap place you've found for dinner -- don't always take them... Most hotels will cash them but they require ID I havent been in the mid-east (Saudi Arabia) for about 8 years or so, even then I don't recall having a problem using an ATM - anywhere I go I am uncomfortable carrying large amounts of cash -- I'd rather get it when i need it... in the currency of the country I am in. I would guess - and AMEX would probably be able to answer this better - that unless a place took credit cards -- they are not going to take the Traveller's Check card... |
Have you tried buying any of the credit cards that you pay a set amount for?
You can buy them in denominations like $50 or $100. I saw them in the grocery store, and they had a substantial service fee, but I'm sure they could be found elsewhere for less. I don't like debit cards--you don't have the same recourse that you do with credit cards, in case of shoddy merchandise and the like. |
